Today we talk about two stories about Elisha's ministry that have an interesting connection: bread (during a famine). Does this bread speak more about spiritual things than about physical things? We continue the story of Elisha and the Shunnamite woman in 2 Kings 4. The child that the woman was miraculously blessed with has died! (This sounds strikingly similar to the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 17.) Elisha will be used to raise the child miraculously in a very similar fashion to that of his predecessor. But what does this mean for the typological connections to the New Testament?

Ahaziah's life ends without fanfare as he tries to seek wisdom from a foreign god. YHWH's prophet, Elijah, pronounces his certain death and no show of force will hinder the Lord's will from being done.

As predicted he dies even though he disgueses himself in order to hide from God's judgement. His death fulfills YHWH's word and his son Ahaziah begins to reign in his place. Meanwhile, Jehoshaphat reigns in Judah with a primarily good track record.

The second battle ends with victory on the battlefield but defeat in the heart of Israel's king (Ahab). Everything is followed by a strange prophetic sign which becomes the key for understanding Ahab's spiritual problem.

Elijah is instructed by God to call his successor. Interestingly, the call of Elisha is a foreshadow of Jesus' call of his disciples. Then in chapters 20-22, the reader is given deeper insight about the reign of Ahab and why God will not allow him to continue to lead the people.
