EatScripture - Ep 246 (w/o background music) - 2 Kings 5 01.08.2023

The story of the miraculous healing of Naaman the leper through Elisha is one that is fairly well known among Jesus followers. But perhaps we don't understand the typological relevance it offers. Is this the story of God's incorporation of Gentiles into His divine plan? Is it a story that includes baptism and new creation? And what about this entering into the house of a foreign god and YH...

EatScripture - Ep 245 - 2 Kings 4:38-44 18.07.2023

Today we talk about two stories about Elisha's ministry that have an interesting connection: bread (during a famine). Does this bread speak more about spiritual things than about physical things? Why is "wild food" deadly prior to Elisha's miracle? What story does the second vignette remind us of from the New Testament and why?

EatScripture - Ep 244 - 2 Kings 4:18-37 11.07.2023

We continue the story of Elisha and the Shunnamite woman in 2 Kings 4. The child that the woman was miraculously blessed with has died! (This sounds strikingly similar to the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 17.) Elisha will be used to raise the child miraculously in a very similar fashion to that of his predecessor. But what does this mean for the typological connections to the New Testament?

EatScripture - Ep 243 - 2 Kings 4:1-17 27.06.2023

Elisha is doing some very Elijah-like things in this section of Scripture, including meeting widows in their time of need and causing jars of oil to not run out. But there are some distinct differences in the way each prophet's ministry is playing out in their respective time periods. What are these differences telling us as we continue to see all the Scriptures as being about Jesus and His mi...

EatScripture - Ep 242 - 2 Kings 3 20.06.2023

We explore a weird story that includes Elisha but does not center on him. Jehoram, who is Ahab's second son, has come to the throne in Israel. He is not quite as bad as his mom and dad in his desire to follow other gods, and yet his idolatry is disturbingly similar to what the reader has seen throughout Kings. With multiple references to Egypt, the wilderness, and the conquest, this story seem...

EatScripture - Ep 241 - 2 Kings 2:15-25 13.06.2023

The story of Elijah's ascension ends with a curious account of 50 men searching for his body for 3 days, yet without success. A Jesus prophecy? Next Elisha cleanses bitter water, reminding us of Moses. Finally, wild beasts come out of the woods and maul 42 young men - a story that should not take the reader by surprise in the same way that it has often done.

EatScripture - Ep 240 (w/o background music) - 2 Kings 2:1-14 06.06.2023

Elijah is being taken by God as his time in this life comes to a close. Elisha will get to see it happen. Several occurances throughout this passage give us a glimpse into Jesus' final time with His disciples.

EatScripture - Ep 239 - 2 Kings 1 30.05.2023

Ahaziah's life ends without fanfare as he tries to seek wisdom from a foreign god. YHWH's prophet, Elijah, pronounces his certain death and no show of force will hinder the Lord's will from being done.

EatScripture - Ep 238 - 1 Kings 22:29-53 22.05.2023

Ahab, King of Israel, goes out to battle even though the prophet of YHWH has clearly stated it will result in his death. As predicted he dies even though he disgueses himself in order to hide from God's judgement. His death fulfills YHWH's word and his son Ahaziah begins to reign in his place. Meanwhile, Jehoshaphat reigns in Judah with a primarily good track record.

EatScripture - Ep 237 - 1 Kings 22:1-28 07.03.2023

The final chapter of first Kings comes into focus with an alliance between North & South Israel, between Ahab & Jehoshaphat. They have agreed to go to war together against Syria. However, although Jehoshaphat is keen on hearing a word from YHWH about the battles' outcome Ahab is reluctant. The reader is given a view into the "heavenly boardroom" as YHWH's Divine Council helps plan Ahab's u...

EatScripture - Ep 236 (w/o background music) - 1 Kings 21 04.03.2023

In 1 Kings 21 Ahab is trying to take possession of a vineyard from a righteous man who exemplifies to be faithful to the Lord's will. Through the work of his evil wife, Jezebel, he acquires the vineyard which does not belong to him. For the attentive reader, many earmarks can be found throughout the story pointing one forward to the great story of God's vineyard being unjustly threatened by the fu...

EatScripture - Ep 235 (w/o background music) - 1 Kings 20:16-43 28.02.2023

Battles take place between Ahab and Ben-hadad (the king of Syria). The first battle goes quite well with a wonderful Israelite victory (Ahab did it God's way). The second battle ends with victory on the battlefield but defeat in the heart of Israel's king (Ahab). Everything is followed by a strange prophetic sign which becomes the key for understanding Ahab's spiritual problem.

EatScripture - Ep 234 (w/o background music) - 1 Kings 19:19-20:15 25.02.2023

Elijah is instructed by God to call his successor. Interestingly, the call of Elisha is a foreshadow of Jesus' call of his disciples. Then in chapters 20-22, the reader is given deeper insight about the reign of Ahab and why God will not allow him to continue to lead the people.
