This module is a very good way to test a matched set of components designed for driving high voltage generators like this. The chip has an enable input that is being used to trigger this module, but it can also be used with a transistor to control the output voltage based on feedback. In that application a high value resistor pulls the enable pin high to enable the high voltage generation, and the...

This unit is designed to sit on the dashboard of a car, and when it detects no vibration for about three minutes it starts a sterilising cycle where it gives out short low level doses of ozone and other active air molecules to deodorize and sterilise the interior space in the vehicle. Ozone can degrade some natural materials like rubber, but most materials used in modern cars are synthetic and sho...

Although this light could be very useful for illuminating dark cupboards automatically, or illuminating your path to the toilet at night, it's greatest value is probably as a comfort light in the event of a power cut. Unlike other lights with similar functionality, this one seems to have been sensibly designed, with a very low standby current and the ability to function as a continuous light...

UVC lamps are widely used for sterilisation of well and tank water, and for sterilising surfaces. Because the wavelength of the UVC light (254nm) is so short, it requires specialist ultra pure glass to pass the required wavelength. The destructive nature of UVC light means that it damages its own glass tube over time, meaning that while it's still working internally, the actual UVC output may...

A look inside a fairly attractive mood light from Lidl. It has the option of warm white or colours, and shapes punched through the diffuser give a sparkling effect. The construction is very simple, with a control PCB tacked on the end of a bit of LED tape and the whole thing stuck and cable tied to an internal pillar. If you lose the remote the light will still be usable, as it defaults to warm wh...

This is quite a handy little timing module for controlling 120/240V loads. It has a four way DIP switch that allows 16 different time delays to be set, ranging from one minute to 8 hours. Although configured to power the load for the set time before turning it off, it looks like it's viable to solder directly to the other terminal for turning the load on after a delay. Or even toggling betwee...

People often ask me if it's possible to make their washing machine fill with more water during the wash cycle. It's not something you can easily adjust, as the machine is deliberately filling up with small portions of water while it tumbles the clothes, until it detects that they are no absorbing any more water. There are two reasons for this. It results in the detergent being more conce...

Oh dear! It turns out that onlycams is a porn website. But I'm sure they probably use equipment just like this for making their erotic content. But anyway, here's another pop-shot of technical goodies from AliExpress for us to explore. These videos are not sponsored by AliExpress. I buy all these items myself. Another video that I filmed while staying in work-provided accommodation. Hence the slightly boomy audio and grey background. It also made the videos a bit more awkward to make, as I had to upload image files mid-video and then print the images at work. This is one of many random light that appears in the middle of Lidl in the UK. Lidl is a grocery store that has a central area with weekly stock o...

Having recently taken apart a stylish audiophile power filter, I thought it would be interesting to buy a traditional metal cased unit and look inside it. Most of these "pro" filters have a label on them showing the components used inside. The construction is quite neat and in a way very "retro", with strong vibes of the metal cased filters used in older radio equipment. You&#0...

This is the first time I've seen an LED panel like this use a single custom shaped PCB for all the LEDs. I'd guess the holes are to allow alignment in the pick and place machine that makes the manufacture of these panels ultra fast. There will still be some human involvement for the threading of the wires, soldering and placing the aluminium PCB and cover on the panel. The witch themed p...

This was filmed in accommodation at work, so the environment and sound will be different. (I'm back at the usual bench now.) Initially I was a bit suspicious about this device which is basically a USB powered ioniser. There was a possibility it might be fake and not have high voltage circuitry, or if it did then it may have an issue where an ioniser creates a huge DC voltage differential with...

This light came from an eBay seller and was shipped locally in the UK. These very common solar lanterns should be regarded as a starter kit for customisation to make a safer and more reliable product. They have a nice case with lots of potential for custom modifications, including use as a USB powered indoor feature light. The circuitry has no major surprises for this very common style of light. T...

Another Frankenstein of technical goodies from AliExpress for us to explore. So exciting that I got all my words mixed up (capacitive dropper and oscilloscope?) It's a lurid plastic thing with great hackability. Either to make it perform its intended function, or as a custom case for a project. It has possible uses as:- A custom futuristic corner light fitted with white LEDs An aroma diffuser, using the fan to blow air past material soaked in an aroma oil. A very low level ozone diffuser with a generic 5V corona discharge based ozone module. A perple...

On one hand it's disappointing that the first of these I bought was faulty (badly soldered wire), but on the other hand it was the perfect excuse to open and reverse engineer it, and it's actually pretty good. Because Poundland is the importer and seller of these chargers it has to comply with safety standards unlike amazon, ebay and Chinese websites who often wash their hands of such fr...

The main reason I bought this bulb was because of its vastly inflated cost compared to the others on the same shelf at ASDA. I wanted to see if the circuitry inside was special. To help sell the image of being better, the bulb is supplied in a huge box compared to normal lamps. There are very strong similarities in the design compared to Philips equivalent high efficiency lamp. That includes the s...

This video is an exploration of the circuitry used in many professional haze and fog machines used in the event industry. Notably the Haze Base, Unique Solutions machines. These machines share a common base control system, but differ in physical appearance. By understanding the circuitry it will help with fault diagnostics and identifying if a PCB needs replaced. The most common problems with thes...

These things are very widely available, which is a slight issue, as in the wrong hands they can pose a risk of permanent eye damage. This device should not be aimed at people's eyes and should NEVER be given to a kid as a toy. The circuitry is notable for the way the microcontroller is powered via its own regulator, and then turns on the rest of the circuitry by enabling another adjustable re...
