Ecclesiastes 11-12:7 Cast Your Bread On The Waters Jason Velotta Download

This Sunday we will finish the book as we study 1 John 5:18-21. All through the letter John has focused on evidence and assurance. He has shown us the evidence of salvation and how we can have assurance that we have been born of God. The text has also insisted at every point that this evidence is what God does in the people He saves, not a standard we must meet in order to earn life. John repeated...

Ecclesiastes 10 (Part 1) Living Wisely or Foolishly Jason Velotta Download

Sunday, we will examine 1 John 5:13-17, the first part of John’s conclusion. Here, he summarizes what he has taught throughout the letter and shows us the difference that assurance makes in the life of every believer. We won’t see new evidences of assurance here, instead, he is telling us what this assurance does. First, it gives us certainty that we already have eternal life if we believe in the...

Sunday, we will finish 1 John 4. Verses 17-21 are part of the larger section (v. 7-21) teaching how love for the brothers and sisters in Christ is evidence of salvation. All through 1 John, he has given us the grounds of assurance by pointing to what God actually does in the hearts of those He saves. So John’s examination is not asking whether we a loving one another well enough to have assurance...

Ecclesiastes 8:1-17 The Benefits & Limits Of Wisdom Jason Velotta Download

A significant portion of 1 John focuses on the believers’ love for the body of Christ, so we are spending a lot of time talking about love. We are working our way through 1 John 4:7-21, which is a large section showing us that this love for one another is evidence of being born again. Last week, we examined verses 7-12, and this Sunday we will focus on verses 13-16. Although we are working through...

Ecclesiastes 7:1-14 The Better Life Jason Velotta Download

Only two chapters are left in our study of 1 John. John wrote this letter to give believers the God-ordained evidences of salvation in response to professed believers who left the churches and now claimed they had the “true” Jesus and salvation. We have noted several times that this book circles around three tests we are to examine. Doctrine, obedience, and love. All of chapter three showed us tha...

Ecclesiastes 6:1-12 When Having It All Isn’t Enough Jason Velotta Download

Sunday, John concludes the argument he began in chapter three. 1 John 3:4-18 was a very difficult section to work through. John told us that the evidence we have been born of God is the transformed life that strives to keep His commandments (3:4-10). Then, he continued with the evidence of loving the brethren. He said, “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothe...

Ecclesiastes 5:8-20 The Vanity Of Pursuing Wealth Jason Velotta Download

As we continue our journey through 1 John, this Sunday we arrive at a passage many consider among the most unsettling verses in the New Testament. John writes because some had left the fellowship while still claiming the name of Christ, chasing a different gospel and a different view of Jesus. He wants true believers to know that they possess eternal life and perfect acceptance with God through Je...

“They went out from us, but they were not of us.” (v. 19). 1 John presents the God-given evidence of salvation to the readers. But this is not simply a theological or academic exercise. John is writing to hurting, worried Christians who had watched people they knew and loved walk away from the church (and the gospel) while still claiming to follow Jesus – the “real” Jesus. Understandably, the Chri...

Do not love the world! What do you think of when you hear this command? What does worldliness look like? To define worldliness, most of us would point to something “out there,” (and that is not incorrect), but John will define the world we must not love as desires and attitudes within our hearts. He will define the world with the phrases, “the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the...
