Bookish Ambitions: A Books and Adaptation Podcast

You think an episode about  The Love Hypothesis  is going to be just that. But do you know us?? 😂 In this episode, we're breaking down the biggest changes between Ali Hazelwood's  The Love Hypothesis  and its movie adaptation. Of course, we have thoughts. Lots of them. Not just about the movie itself, but about what those changes say about the importance of seeing women support women, esp...

The fanfic-to-book-to-adaptation pipeline is real, and we are here for it. In today's episode, we're chatting all things fanfiction and how it has inspired some major film and book deals. This seems incredibly relevant because  The Love Hypothesis  comes out  THIS WEEK , and it started as a fanfic! What?!? From  Fifty Shades of Grey  to  Alchemized  and so much more in between, we're discussing th...

Practical Magic 2 is coming out, and do we wish we were the Owens Sisters? Yes, we do. The first movie brought us so much nostalgia and reminds us how much we love witchcraft in the 90's. Naturally, we had to read the book, and of course, we have thoughts. This week we are talking through our August Book Club Pick, Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman, and the cult classic adaptation that captured...

What happens when you take a Regency romance, give it a tiny budget, a crowdfunding campaign, a set in Utah, and a whole lot of ambition? You get  Seeking Persephone , and we're surprisingly into it. This week we're talking about  Sarah M. Eden's   Seeking Persephone  and its screen adaptation, including the marriage-of-convenience romance, Beauty and the Beast vibes, our favorite char...

We decided to let you sit in on book club this week. 📖 We're talking all things  The Seven-Year Slip  by  Ashley Poston , our July Patreon Book Club pick, including the time-travel structure that somehow converted Caroline from a time-hop skeptic, the characters we fell completely in love with, the relationships that made us want a Fiona and Drew of our own, and the very important role of lemon p...

Bella is the red flag. Edward is the red flag. Jacob is... also a red flag. Honestly? Everyone needs therapy. This week we're heading back to Forks to revisit  New Moon  by  Stephenie Meyer  and the 2009 film adaptation. With Robert Pattinson once again roasting  Twilight  during  The Odyssey  press tour, it felt like the perfect excuse to ask the question: did this story age terribly... or did we...

Mary Bennet finally gets her story and we are not calm about it. This week we're doing a full breakdown of  The Other Bennet Sister  — Janice Hadlow's novel and the BBC/BritBox adaptation that we have been waiting to talk about for what feels like an entire year. We cover the book, the show, the casting that made us gasp (Richard E. Grant! The woman who played Mary Bennet in the Colin Firt...

We read it. We watched it. We cried at an octopus. We are not okay. This week we're doing a full book versus movie breakdown of  Remarkably Bright Creatures  by Shelby Van Pelt and the new Netflix adaptation starring Sally Field and — yes — Bill Pullman's son. We talk about what the book does beautifully, why Caroline thinks the movie actually improves on it, Marcellus the giant Pacific oc...

We have wanted to do this episode since day one! This week, we're talking Wishbone — the PBS live-action children's series that aired from 1995 to 1997, the new documentary  What's the Story, Wishbone?  that just dropped, and why we genuinely believe we wouldn't have this podcast if we hadn't grown up watching a Jack Russell Terrier in a Renaissance costume act out Romeo &...

We recorded in person, we kept it short, and we are extremely proud of ourselves. This week we're talking summer — the adaptations we're most excited about, the books we're adding to our TBRs, and the trips we're absolutely planning around our favorite books. We cover Interview with the Vampire Season 3, Every Year After on Prime, Heartstopper Forever, and Five Star Weekend on Peac...

We made it to 10 episodes and we are celebrating with the most important deep dive we could think of. This week we're talking Twilight — book one, movie one, and all the feelings. We cover why Twilight hit so differently for millennials, the Mormon lens Stephenie Meyer brought to her vampires, why Edward Cullen is absolutely a red flag and why we loved him anyway, the iconic blue tint and what...

We read it. We watched it. We have a lot of thoughts, and some of them got personal. This week, we're doing a full book versus show breakdown of  Margo's Got Money Troubles  — the novel by Rufi Thorpe and the Apple TV series starring Elle Fanning, Nick Offerman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Marcia Gay Harden, and Nicole Kidman. We talk about what the show changed and why, why Caroline loved the book...

We watched Off-Campus so you didn't have to — except you absolutely should. This week, we're doing a full book versus show breakdown of Elle Kennedy's  The Deal  and the new Amazon Prime series Off-Campus. We talk about what they kept, what they changed, why most of the changes were actually the right call, the locker room consent conversation that made us want to stand up and applaud, Hannah's mo...

We warned you there was a lot of book news. We were not wrong. This week we're back after a little break (life happened, end of April is a lot, we have no further notes) and we are diving straight into the biggest list of book and adaptation news we've ever put together. New books from Rebecca Yarros and John Green, a Star Wars romance, a new Divergent book nobody asked for, Greta Gerwig d...

We are talking about one of our all-time favorite films this week and we are not calm about it. This week: Caroline finished  Margo's Got Money Troubles  and finally has  Beach Read  in hand, Anne Hathaway's production company bought the rights to a book before it was even published (we have questions), Jamie Dornan is reportedly playing Strider in the new Lord of the Rings film (we have t...

We tried to cover Jane Austen in one episode. We failed gloriously and we have zero regrets. This week we do a 3,000 foot view of all six Jane Austen novels, dive into over 50 years of adaptations, and end up planning our future trip to Bath. Along the way we talk  Bride & Prejudice ,  Clueless ,  Sanditon , the 2005  Pride & Prejudice  hand flex, and why Johnny Lee Miller is the unsung he...

This week we take a trip down memory lane to one of our all-time favorite adaptations and honestly, the movie that started it all for us. We talk  Treasure Island  the book,  Muppet Treasure Island  the masterpiece, and why a 1996 Muppet movie is secretly one of the best book-to-screen adaptations ever made. This week: Caroline finished  Throne of the Fallen ,  Song of Achilles , and approximately...

Episode 3 is here and we went there. This week we talk about spice in books — when it works, when it doesn't, and why we think the balance matters more than the heat level. We also gush about  Heated Rivalry and share some unexpected recommendations. This week: Catherine is rereading  Love, Theoretically  for a new book club, Caroline is still deep in her very spicy fantasy novel (no regrets),...

This week we dig into a breaking story from the book world that has everyone talking, rank our way through the Emily Henry catalogue, and debate whether  People We Meet on Vacation  was really the right book to adapt first. This week: Catherine finishes the  Once Upon a Broken Heart  trilogy and lands in a reading lull, Caroline is deep in a spicy fantasy with serious yearning energy, and we get i...

We're here! In our very first episode, we introduce ourselves, share why we started Bookish Ambitions, and dive headfirst into the stories we can't stop talking about. This week: Caroline's debut book  Let Her Return  is officially releasing on her birthday (March 27th!), Catherine is deep in a YA trilogy she can't put down, and Sarah J. Maas just broke the internet with some very...
