WE ARE THE FALL Podcast

Mark Kennedy's first concert was The Fall in 1979, and he has gone on to create the album artwork for Reformation Post TLC, Your Future Our Clutter, and Ersatz GB, as well as many of the most iconic public mosaics representing MES. Above all, he was MES's mate, and therefore, you are in for a treat as Mark guides us through a number of entertaining stories and Fall insights. Cheers Mark! *...

SIDE A was only getting us ready for the choice side, SIDE B: The album pushes further into its own strange terrain, part driving rhythm, part unraveling structure, all held together by sheer force of intent. This is where Re-Mit reveals its deeper layers, with tracks that stretch, collide, and refuse to settle. We unpack the tension, the momentum, and the sense that The Fall are still finding new...

Gather 'round mates, as we drop into Side A of Re-Mit (2013), where The Fall sound wiry, restless, and fully locked into their late-period stride. The grooves feel live, almost volatile, riffs snapping into place while Mark E. Smith delivers one of his most animated, unpredictable performances of this era. We dig into how this opening stretch blends propulsion with looseness, giving Re-Mit a r...

[PATREON PREVIEW:] Random Record Club (#3): We drop the needle on Side A of Lick My Decals Off, Baby and step straight into Captain Beefheart’s fractured, razor-edged universe. Tighter and more stripped down than Trout Mask Replica but no less bewildering, these tracks snap, twist, and lurch with precision and purpose. We dig into the rhythms, the surreal lyricism, and the band’s almost telepathic...

Side B of Ersatz GB leans deeper into its strange, synthetic groove, at times mechanical, at times oddly playful, but never predictable. This is where the album’s quirks fully emerge, with textures that feel both rigid and unstable. We unpack the back half’s uneasy rhythms, buried hooks, and the way The Fall continue to mutate without losing their core edge. Are you searching for the new episode n...

We drop into Side A of Ersatz GB (2011), where The Fall push further into their digital-era sound, glossy on the surface, but still full of friction underneath. Synths pulse, rhythms feel slightly off-center, and Mark E. Smith prowls through it all with that unmistakable authority. We dig into how this opening stretch reframes The Fall’s identity once again, blending cold textures with their signa...

Apparently, we somehow missed a Peel session, and being the completists that we are, it's time for the reckoning. Let's go back to 1991 for this session from Maida Vale that no one would ever forget. Are you searching for the new episode now? Are you looking for the real thing, yeah?  You may be missing out on more great Fall-related explorations… but not if you join WATF PATREON:   Full...

We couldn't care less that Twilight (2008 film) snubbed a potential Fall song being included in their Oscar-winning soundtrack... flipping to Side B, the album opens up without letting go of its grip, stretching ideas further, twisting structures, and letting the grooves unravel just enough to keep things unpredictable. This is where Your Future Our Clutter reveals its full shape: part trance,...

SIDE B available on WATF Patreon . Happy Grammephone Friday, mate. For this month's convening of Random Record Club, we dive into Side A of A Trip to Marineville and immediately get pulled into Swell Maps’ brilliantly scrappy universe, where punk urgency collides with tape experiments, fractured pop instincts, and a sense that anything could fall apart at any moment. These tracks dart between...

We drop into a long and fun dissection of Side A of Your Future Our Clutter (2010), where The Fall double down on density, repetition, and sheer sonic force. This is a heavier, more hypnotic take on the late-era lineup, riffs grind, rhythms lock into stubborn loops, and Mark E. Smith cuts through with some of his most commanding performances. We dig into how this opening stretch builds a thick, al...

Live from Manchester, the lads sit down with The Fall's most frequent producer, and no doubt, one of our favorites, Mr. Grant Showbiz. In celebration of 50 years of The Fall, this first-ever live interrogation was recorded on stage at Band on The Wall for the Futures and Pasts festival. We could not have asked for better company as the sold out crowd of 5,000 Fall fans were definitely not wron...

Flipping to Side B, Imperial Wax Solvent digs in even deeper, groovier, stranger, and full of those sideways turns The Fall make feel effortless. The rhythms tighten, the textures thicken, and Smith’s voice cuts through it all with that unmistakable mix of command and chaos. We unpack the back half’s hidden gems and off-kilter hooks, tracing how this album cements itself as a late-career high poin...

Bonus episode: For this off-the-cuff interrogation, we get a phone call from the national/international treasure known as Funky Si. Recorded before the release of the latest House of All album, we apologize for the sketchy audio, but it's a worthy listen for the stories and the personality that contains one of our favorite drummers of all time! Are you searching for the new episode now? Are yo...

Steve Albini left this planet 2 years ago, and we recorded an episode (back in 2024; unreleased) covering his last release with Shellac, as well as The Fall's influence on his own music. He may or may not have been in collusion with Virgin trains, but enjoy this mini side-journey!

We drop into Side A of Imperial Wax Solvent (2008), where The Fall sound newly recharged, lean, locked-in, and firing on all cylinders. This lineup hits with precision and punch, channeling Mark E. Smith’s relentless vision into something sharp, immediate, and surprisingly accessible without losing any of the band’s edge. We break down how this era reshapes The Fall’s late-period identity into one...
