The Old Mage MTG Podcast

We are back! Back with another episode of The Old Mage MTG Podcast and back again at The Buckeye Brawl. The Retromancers put together another Premodern Buckeye Brawl in Columbus, OH and Alex and I were there once again to sling some cardboard with our fellow Premodern aficionados. Join us as we discuss our decks, our matchups, the highs, the lows, the good vibes and the headache I got from not eat...

Welcome welcome! Join us as I drag Alex into yet another community-driven, old-cardboard MTG format. This time it's Classic Legacy, and there is plenty of classic cardboard from this era resting in bulk bins around the world. I'm building my collection, and I need your help deciding what to buy. In this episode, I present to you 10 spells that were powerful in their heyday and are now well below t...

Welcome welcome! Join us as we discuss some of Magic's classic old-frame Punisher spells. These spells give your opponent the choice between two punishing outcomes, and challenge them to choose the less oppressive punishment. Sometimes, when battling decision fatigue after a long day of Magic, it's fun to break out a Punisher deck and let your opponent make all of the tough decisions instead. Hope...

Welcome everybody. Join us as we discuss what I've learned after not-so-successfully piloting RG Goblins through a local Premodern Monthly. The goblins did their job. I did not. I mustn't be afraid to send these fellas into the meat grinder. I have 34 of them, after all. Also, we briefly review the decks at the top of the UK Premodern Nationals where goblins, shrimps and enchantresses battled agai...

Welcome everybody. Join us as we discuss the fungal and fungal-adjacent cards printed in the Premodern cardpool. We cover the 1-drops, 2-drops, 3-drops and more-drops. There aren't many mushrooms in the Premodern cardpool, but the format is filthy with saproling generators. Some of which are actually playable. Some of which actually made top 8 appearances on the Pro Tour back in their day. Also, L...

Welcome everybody. Join us as we cover the first fungi printed in MTG. We discuss my decades-long desire to ping Fungusaur until it outgrows a Force of Nature, the glacial nature of old-school Saprolings, and how one might brew a functional old-school deck on a budget with Fallen Empires fungi. We also cover my flashback folly at The Buckeye Brawl. I didn't cheat. I'm just bad at magic. Special sh...

Welcome everybody. Join us as we break down our recent attempts to pilot Premodern goblins and optimize some brews. I've learned that I should tutor for Goblin Sharpshooter more often, that I need to learn to love mulliganing to Lackey, and that Glory in the graveyard is good. Hope you enjoy! Special shoutout to recent channel members Stonerainguy and danehellwig! OldMageAlex has some poems for yo...
