Storytime with Kray

Dorothy lands back on the Kansas prairie near the rebuilt farmhouse. Aunt Em is overwhelmed with relief as Dorothy runs to her. Toto bolts happily toward the barn, back in familiar territory. Dorothy realizes the Silver Shoes fell off during the return and are lost forever in the desert. She is simply glad to be home, and the story ends there.

Dorothy meets Glinda and tells her entire story, ending with her need to return to Kansas. Glinda agrees to help in exchange for the Golden Cap and explains she will use it to aid Dorothy’s friends too. She reveals the Silver Shoes could have taken Dorothy home from the start, but the journey mattered for everyone’s growth. Dorothy says goodbye to her friends, grateful for what they gained. She cl...

A rocky hill is guarded by Hammer-Heads who slam intruders with extendable necks. Fighting them fails instantly, sending the Scarecrow and Lion tumbling downhill. Dorothy uses the Golden Cap for the third and final time to summon the Winged Monkeys. The Monkeys carry them over the hill into the red land of the Quadlings, then leave forever. The group continues toward Glinda’s castle with fresh hop...

The travelers pass through marshy ground into an ancient forest full of wild beasts. The animals beg the Lion for help against a massive spider-like monster that has been eating them. The Lion kills it by targeting its weak neck while it sleeps. The beasts crown the Lion as their king in gratitude. He promises to return after Dorothy reaches home.

They climb the wall and discover a delicate land where everything is made of china. The locals panic because breaking is permanent or at least never fully fixable. Dorothy learns the china people become stiff and lifeless if taken away. The group crosses carefully but still causes damage, including the Lion smashing a china church by accident. They leave quickly, relieved to be out without worse h...

A hostile forest blocks their path and the trees physically attack them by hurling intruders away. The Tin Woodman chops attacking branches to create a safe passage. Toto gets grabbed briefly, but is freed quickly. After escaping the forest, they find a tall white wall that blocks the road south.

Dorothy is crushed, while her friends try to think practically. Dorothy uses the Golden Cap again, but the Winged Monkeys refuse because they cannot leave Oz’s land. A soldier suggests Glinda, the powerful Witch of the South, as the best hope. The group decides to travel south together, accepting the risk because doing nothing guarantees failure.

Oz decides to leave Oz entirely and proposes a hot air balloon to cross the desert. Dorothy helps sew the balloon, and the city gathers to watch the launch. Dorothy runs to find Toto at the last moment, and the balloon breaks loose too soon. Oz floats away alone, leaving Dorothy stranded again and the city without its fake wizard.

Oz tries to satisfy the group by giving them symbolic versions of what they asked for. He fills the Scarecrow with “bran new” brains, pins and needles included. He installs a stuffed silk heart in the Tin Woodman and gives the Lion a drink he claims becomes courage once swallowed. The three feel transformed, but Dorothy still has no way home.

Oz delays seeing them again, dragging things out for days. The group threatens to summon the Winged Monkeys, forcing Oz to meet them. Toto knocks over a screen, revealing Oz is just a frightened old man using tricks. Oz admits he is a humbug and has no real magic. The travelers are furious because their lives were risked for a lie.

Dorothy frees the Winkies, who celebrate and help her recover her friends. The Winkies repair the Tin Woodman and restuff the Scarecrow after recovering his clothes from a tree. Dorothy finds the Golden Cap and later uses it to summon the Winged Monkeys to escape being lost on the return trip. The Monkey King explains the Cap’s origin and the rule that the charm only works three times. They arrive...

Dorothy is forced into hard labor while the Witch tries to break the Lion by starving him. Dorothy secretly feeds the Lion at night and keeps his spirit alive. The Witch steals one Silver Shoe with a trap, but Dorothy fights back in anger. Dorothy throws water on the Witch and melts her completely, freeing everyone in the castle.

The travelers head west into rough country with no real road. The Wicked Witch attacks with wolves, crows, and bees, but the Tin Woodman and Scarecrow defeat them using their strengths. With her usual weapons spent, the Witch uses the Golden Cap to summon the Winged Monkeys. The Monkeys capture the Lion, wreck the Tin Woodman, scatter the Scarecrow, and carry Dorothy to the Witch’s castle.

Dorothy is brought before Oz and sees him as a terrifying great Head. She asks to go home, but Oz demands she kill the Wicked Witch of the West first. The others each meet Oz in different forms and receive the same condition. The group realizes Oz is powerful, but also controlling and transactional. They leave with one grim task between them and everything they want.

The travelers reach the Emerald City and meet the Guardian of the Gates. He locks green spectacles onto them, claiming the city’s brightness would overwhelm unprotected eyes. They enter the dazzling city and are taken to the palace. They learn Oz will see them, but only one visitor per day.

The Tin Woodman saves a mouse from a wildcat, and she turns out to be the Queen of the Field Mice. The Scarecrow asks for help saving the Lion from the poppy field. The mice use a wooden truck and teamwork to pull the Lion to safety. The chapter shows that even the smallest allies can change the outcome.

The Lion tows the raft to shore, and a stork helps rescue the stranded Scarecrow. The group wanders into a field of poppies whose scent puts Dorothy and Toto to sleep. The Lion also collapses from the fumes, too heavy to carry. The Scarecrow and Tin Woodman manage to drag Dorothy out, but the Lion remains trapped in the field.

They camp in the forest and struggle to find food, but keep moving. A huge ditch blocks the road, so the Lion helps everyone cross with powerful leaps. Later they face deadly Kalidahs and escape by dropping them into the gorge using a chopped tree bridge. They build a raft to cross a river, but the current sweeps them away and strands the Scarecrow on a pole.

A Lion tries to intimidate them but quickly reveals he is afraid of everything. Dorothy calls him out, and he admits he wants courage more than anything. He joins the group, hoping Oz will fix what he thinks is broken in him. The travelers now have four different wishes tied to one destination.

The travelers discover a Tin Woodman rusted solid in the woods. Dorothy oils his joints and brings him back to life. He tells his story and explains he wants a heart so he can love again. He joins the trip to Oz, and the group becomes three.

Dorothy finds a Scarecrow stuck on a pole and helps him down. He explains he wants brains and believes Oz can help him. Dorothy invites him to travel with her to the Emerald City. Their journey becomes a shared mission instead of a solo struggle.

Dorothy meets the Munchkins and the Good Witch of the North. She learns her house killed the Wicked Witch of the East, freeing the Munchkins from slavery. Dorothy receives the Silver Shoes and is told to follow the Yellow Brick Road to Oz. Her goal becomes simple, reach the Emerald City and ask to go home.

Dorothy lives on a harsh Kansas farm with Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and Toto. A cyclone hits and Dorothy gets trapped inside the house as it’s lifted into the sky. After a terrifying ride, the house drops into a strange land. Dorothy realizes she has been carried far from home.

The next day, Ichabod is gone, and the only clues are his hat, his ruined saddle, and a smashed pumpkin by the creek, which convinces most locals he was taken by the Horseman. Over time, rumors spread that Ichabod actually survived, left town in shame, and eventually became a lawyer and politician, while Brom marries Katrina and laughs a little too hard at the pumpkin detail. The story ends with a...
