rorykl 3Speak Podcast

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/fjcbegxezm funny, I didn’t ***choose*** to do this on September 11th. Honestly, to me September 11 will always just be my sister’s birthday…yes I said Happy Birthday to her ;) These lyrics have been crumpling up in my backpack since I printed and prepped them like a month ago…today was just the day so finally got the chance to try playing it, pure chance…but becaus...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/ryhrjqbtoj I’m changing the naming structure of my videos to prioritize the song name! Uploaded using 3Speak Mobile App

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/rethopcuju Honestly I’m working remote today due to Tropical Storm Debbie, I stopped to take a lunch break, and this song popped into my head! I listened to this album 1000’s of times in high school, and probably hundreds more times over the years, but never played really anything off of it myself before (I did play *Pretty Pink Ribbon* last year, but that’s from a...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/tyxynrym Summer 2024 officially begins! Today I am home with my youngest; it's her first day off for summer so we're having daddy daughter time. She said, daddy are you gonna do some guitar? So I thought, yeah let's dust off the old axe! Starting off with a little rust, haven't played much since last summer - but this has morivated me to step it up and crank out so...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/ovoraxtuvi Greetings, Hive family! I feel I must start today with an apology for everyone who commented on last week’s video and didn’t see a response – I was travelling all last week and didn’t find myself at any point with enough free time to read and respond to comments, but I value them and will be filtering through them all once I get settled back into things....

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/wqzzfmjmtc Man, oh man! I really didn’t realize how long a 3 week break would feel, but I swear by week two I was getting antsy and kinda regretting my decision lol! Although I think I probably will wind up alternating cycles here, the first week and a half felt like such a wasted opportunity! …As the time passed, I came to value that disconnected period. It was a...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/begloabzuz I guess I unconsciously chose to make “experimental” the running theme for these three rounds. Today I am doing Dos Oruguitas, by Lin-Manuel Miranda...en Español. This is super experimental, particularly because I am not fluent in Spanish. I can read/pronounce characters, but I don’t often know what the words I’m saying actually mean. I’ve been trying to...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/jueyblvprv Paul Simon’s *Graceland* album came into my life during a parcularly special me in my young development. The unique rhythms and melodies, paired with the very powerful voices of Ladysmith Black Mambazo (a contemporary South African a cappella group) touched me in ways no other music ever had. The songs accomplished myriad different sounds and archetype...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/rhxagcdyey Although I can’t claim to know anything about Ray LaMontagne or any of the specific details surrounding his music, I did find myself deeply identifying with this song, from some distant place in my past. I sang along with the song in my car for a day (on the way to and from work) before recording it today, and recall seeing from a bird’s eye perspective...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/ztbvizyuwc Had a tough time uploading, but it looks like I got to the bottom of it.

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/frdjwsageq # Throwback Video 015/015 # I can't remember what exactly it was that I saw, but I remember I wandered past a TV and saw something like the Daily Show, making jokes about the corruption of our governments and I thought, man, people are laughing at this, and it's like it's absolved. I think that was when I sat down and wrote this song, just caught up comp...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/dzyxddjluu # Throwback Video 014/015 # The opus! This may not be the version to reflect as much, but in my opinion this is the best song I ever wrote. I remember sitting on the concrete with the Gretsch Way Out West, practically going mad trying to come up with a song, but nothing would come to mind. This was a turbulent time. The tension between the drummer and I...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/rrcdzdwroi # Throwback Video 013/015 # Ok next up on the greatest hits of RoryKL - another of my drop dead absolute favorites. This isn't the greatest version ever recorded, but it's the best one that survived the existential crisis period, and by far, I still think it's really good. This is another piecewise compostion, but where Yesterday's Magic was an amalgamat...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/tdvmwpcnfl # Throwback Video 012/015 # Ok y'all, now we're gettin' down to it. 12-15 are, in my opinion, some of the very best songs I ever wrote. This one is a mixed bag, which was one of my favorite ways to write a song. The first verse is my wife, the second verse my best friend, who was also my wife's brother...we were friends before I met her, and choosing to...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/erzvhmqzlj # Throwback Video 011/015 # I personally love this one. I mean, they're all my babies and I love them all, but this one really speaks to the me of back then *and* the me of now. Back then I was hypersexualized in my mind, very much addicted to empty thrills and meaningless acts of selfishness. I love the way the lyrics capture that, with really visceral...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/tirtmzkftg # Throwback Video 010/015 # This is another one I should probably just *not* explain but for this one, I feel like it's not obfuscated...you can probably tell something is up just from the chords I chose and the lyrical composition. But in either case, this one was written about my first experience with mescaline, extracted from a cactus called San Pedro...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/rmjiscrcaw # Throwback Video 009/015 # This one I love, at least partially just because I think it has good lyrical composition and some clever lines mixed with a nice instrumental melody - there's not honestly a ton of personal history in this one though. This is another one I wrote from an imagined or borrowed perspective. I spent some time bumming around Lawrenc...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/hyfikoxxum # Throwback Video 008/015 # Have you ever been frustrated by, for example, The Beatles refusing to admit that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was about LSD? I always was. I thought, what are you hiding, no one cares and at least if we have confirmation we can enjoy knowing the intention behind the song! ...but this song is one of a couple that taught me th...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/nlmfuixlxp # Throwback Video 007/015 # I wrote this song in 2004. It was written about a waitress I saw working, I think at an Old Chicago restaurant in Manhattan Kansas. I wrote the song on a napkin, inspired by this waitress. Later I put chords to it and came back and played it for her...honestly I had really high hopes that my musical prowess would win her heart...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/zjllgsttyu # Throwback Video 006/015 # This song is (in my humble opinion) a great example of using music to creatively express your inner emotions, while at the same time obscuring the true intention. During my first tour overseas with the army, I was the only mechanic for the forward reconnaisance group. When they offered me a sergeant position after the first to...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/eqqwothqov # Throwback Video 005/015 # This was actually one of the first songs I wrote; it was written during my second tour overseas with the army. Looking back on this video and remembering what the song sounded like in its early days, I think I disagree with 2007 Rory...the original was slower and certainly had its merit, but this is where I was at in 2007, and...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/mozjvkdylz # Throwback Video 004/015 # Back in those days of musical experimentation, I spent studio time just squeezing whatever sounds I could get out of whatever instruments I could find, but the keyboard was probably my favorite that year. I never did any live shows with it, it was only used to create studio music, but it was just a lot of fun to get familiar w...

https://3speak.tv/watch?v=rorykl/ubclhslchz # Throwback Video 003/015 # Back at the Kentucky St house, times got tough for a while. When there were like 9 of us living there, the house finances divided up and cost next to nothing...but when people started leaving, we found ourselves barely making rent. In our quest to survive, we spent a solid year just taking in anyone who would be willing to mov...
