Popcorn for Breakfast

An early-1900s murder mystery in which the lead detective works with… *checks notes*… Edgar Allan Poe? The plot of The Pale Blue Eye is certainly not one you come across every day but it is also one of those ideas that’s so crazy it just might work. And if that’s not enough to draw you in, its cast features Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Lucy Boynton, Gillian Anderson, and more. In our The Pale Bl...

In this episode, we will discuss the premiere of HBO’s The Last of Us series including thoughts on video games as a storytelling medium. We also breakdown Netflix’s 2023 Save The Dates promo and discuss what we are excited for. Plus, we finally...

So far in 2023, only one movie has captured the attention of casual and avid film fans alike, M3GAN. When a movie like this comes around (read: a horror movie with an obvious gimmick) it always begs the question: is this just another campy “B” movie that’s fun but not much else? OR is this a movie masterpiece in “B” movie clothing? In our M3GAN review, we tackle that exact question as we break dow...

Roll out the red carpet! Or honestly probably any old carpet will do because it is just the Golden Globes. Hollywood’s second-rate movie and TV awards show is here, the 80th Golden Globe Awards. The awards are back on national television this year which means we are forced to pay attention to them. So in this episode, rather than What’s Poppin’, we’re giving you a full Golden Globes Preview comple...

Just two days before we ushered in 2023, we got a late Christmas present from our friends at Netflix: a movie called White Noise, from writer-director Noah Baumbach. White Noise is based on an 80s novel written by Don DeLillo that for decades has been considered by many to be “unfilmable.” In our White Noise Review, we’ll discuss the cast, which includes Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, and...

Out with the old, in with the new! Our first episode of 2023 is all about… 2023. In this week’s edition of What’s Poppin’, we’ll forego the movie and TV news and just focus on the 2023 releases we already know about. We discuss all the films for which we are most excited, least excited, most surprised to be excited, and more. New years always provide hope and promise and that goes for film as well...

We are closing out 2022 with a BANG by reviewing perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year and a film that took 13 years to create, Avatar: The Way of Water. In 2009, Avatar was released and blew up the box office. Since that time, it has grown to become the highest-grossing film of all time and an iconic visual spectacle that everyone recognizes. In our Avatar: The Way of Water review, we’ll...

At the risk of things changing before this episode even goes live, we are going to talk about DC Studios. Yes, we've already talked about this topic numerous times since Black Adam, but it appears the dust has not settled just yet. In this episode, we'll talk about Henry Cavill's surprise exit, Dwayne Johnson's failed coup, and what could possibly be next for the newly-minted DC Studios under Jame...

Some call it “the most wonderful time of the year” but, here at PFB, we like to refer to this time of year by only one adjective… “Special.” By now you’ve almost certainly blown the dust off the covers of your favorite Christmas DVD cases and begun spending a few nights a week with a Christmas film or classic holiday special. This year, visionary director James Gunn is bidding for acceptance into...

2023 is fast approaching and the tentpole franchises are starting to hype their new year slate. This past week, we got new trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Transformers Rise of the Beasts, and more. In this episode, we are going to turn our gaze temporarily to 2023, discuss the new trailers that were released this week...

2019 was a superb year for film. From massive blockbuster hits like Avengers: Endgame to indie international cinematic masterpieces like Parasite, it had something for everyone. In the midst of that year, came a star-studded whodunnit that proved that new, original intellectual properties still had the ability to draw people to theaters. That film, Knives Out, is the predecessor to the subject of...

Out with the new Bob, in with the old Bob? It has been 3 weeks since our last What's Poppin' episode and, in that time, Disney made the shocking announcement that Bob Chapek is "stepping down" and Bob Iger is returning as CEO. Bob Iger has perhaps the most illustrious résumé of any Disney CEO other than Walt himself. But now he returns to a company that is struggling financially and does so with a...

*inhales* WAKANDA FOREVER! We have reached the end of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This film is certainly one of the most anticipated sequels we can remember for reasons both exciting and tragic. In our Black Panther Wakanda Forever review, we discuss everything about the movie from the opening scene to the post-credits scene and everything in betwe...

A Netflix Original Sequel? That’s right! For the first time in PFB history, we are reviewing a sequel to a Netflix Original Film. How is this possible? Well, if you look back, Netflix Original films have not been around as long as you might think. In fact, Enola Holmes was one of the first Netflix films to be successful enough to warrant a sequel, so it is appropriate that the subject of our first...

The biggest franchises around are bringing out the big guns as new trailers for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Avatar: The Way of Water have arrived as well as production and casting news for the next Star Wars series, The Acolyte. Additionally, the Oscars' have already settled on a host, Aubrey Plaza joins the MCU, John Wick may be getting a video game, Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen is getti...

When you think of the films The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline there are probably two of quick thoughts that pop into your head: 1) the films’ iconic, stop-motion animation style and 2) the authors, Tim Burton and Neil Gaiman (respectively), that created those worlds and the characters within them. What may not be readily apparent is that that they are directed by the same visionary direc...

Halloween is over which means we are heading into prime movie-watching season with both holiday blockbusters and award-hopefuls upon us. But, before this rich season of new films kicks off next week with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, we must discuss all the movie and TV news floating around this week. Why? Because, like the mail (shoutout Newman), the news never stops! From new series announceme...

Talk about lucking out! Of course, we are reviewing this past weekend’s biggest box office winner, DC’s Black Adam. But, on top of that, the biggest DC movie news (possibly ever?) dropped just hours before our recording. So, stick around after our Black Adam review to hear our thoughts on James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as co-CEOs of the newly-minted DC Studios including where Black Adam,...

Evil dies tonight! Or does it? This week, we are reviewing Halloween Ends, but perhaps the film should’ve been titled ‘Halloween Ends?’ and that’s not a spoiler. See, legendary horror director John Carpenter has been non-committal about this being the end of the series, citing money as the rationale to keep it going. And, while the ending of this movie seems to have an opinion on whether the franc...

We've got a huge week of Movie & TV news for you on this edition of What's Poppin'! Moments before we recorded, The Hollywood Reporter dropped a massive article detailing some of the future DC films and shows that are in the works including a new Superman movie with Henry Cavill, a mystery James Gunn movie, and more! Also, almost every week we have to leave a placeholder in our agenda for whatever...

This week’s movie review is… well, not a movie at all really. Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night is being classified as a “special presentation” and in this straight to streaming age, there’s really no better way to describe it. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donnelly, Marvel’s Werewolf by Night special represents a massive departure from the typical Marvel formula both in terms of medium an...

For the first time in what feels like a long time, we had a light movie and tv news week. This may sound like a bad thing but it's actually not! Now we can talk about some things we don't always get to like the great shows on tv right now, just what exactly is happening at the box office, and whether or not Rotten Tomatoes is good for the film industry. Of course, we'll also discuss the brand new...

Whether it is a legacy sequel or a re-quel, the Sanderson Sisters are officially back after 29 years in Disney+’s Original Film, Hocus Pocus 2. This movie broke the record for biggest premiere on Disney+ to-date, thanks to the many devoted members of the cult like following for the first Hocus Pocus film. But now the question is: were all those streaming hours worth it? In our Hocus Pocus 2 review...

We are back from vacation and onto more important things... like discussing movie and tv news! Movie starring Chris Pratt, some significant shakeups at Marvel, and tons of new projects and casting announcements from around the industr...

When I heard they were making a movie called The Woman King starring Viola Davis, I figured it had to be a documentary. Viola Davis is undoubtedly the woman king of Hollywood thanks to her Academy Award Winning acting ability, but The Woman King is not a documentary. Instead, Viola Davis co-stars with Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, and more in the fierce and smashmouth true story of the...
