The new coating of white snow has freshened up the landscape. It reminds me of a term called “whitewashing”, when white paint is used to cover up surface flaws to create a fresh clean feeling. A lot of snow has melted the last few days. We have reached the half-way point to meteorological spring, and now winter is starting over again. The recent January thaw inspired me to start getting my legs in shape for the warmer weather of spring. I began with a simple walk of fifty laps around the house. Now that we are halfway through January and daylight has reached 4:30 PM. I am realizing Ground Hog Day is less than three weeks away. It was the morning shadows I saw out the window that caused me to think about shadows and fear for what hides within them. I had my 4-wheel drive truck, sand and shovels, but when I got beyond the cemetery, I found the road was blocked with small trees. I had forgotten to bring a saw. The last day of 2025 was amazing. If we hadn’t had a guest at the Center, we would have had a really big problem. She noticed that a casement window had blown out overnight and the pipes were frozen; later the power went out. During the day everything came to gather and started working again. The weight of the frozen rain on the tree limbs created a lot of power problems. Just when we thought we were at the end of the storm, we were plunged into a blackout where we went from light to total darkness. Fortunately, we were prepared with candles. Probably the most dreaded of winter storms is an ice storm; it rains when the temperature is below freezing and everything turns into a gigantic skating rink. Our house lot was originally marketed as HIGH WINDS AT MADISON. We do get strong winds but not as powerful as on the mountain top where the cabin is located. Recently the snow cover was low enough to let me use my 4-wheel drive truck to reach it, only to be greeted by large snow drifts.
