I Only Like You and Movies

We trusted Ethan Hunt one last time. The Mission: Impossible. The writing: Terrible. The cameos: Breathtaking. The narrative logic: Absent. The stunts: Incredible. The Phoenician Scheme rocketed its way to the top of our list of our favourite Wes Anderson films. It's got so much heart and has been made with so much care, and the performances are flawless. The final season of You wasn't exactly emotionally satisfying, but we're ultimately glad we stuck with it. Farewell, You. Thunderbolts* was great**! We really enjoyed a more serious take on the genre with great performances***. *The New Avengers **No, it actually was. ***Seriously guys, we really liked it. Sinners was a wild ride and we absolutely loved it! It's so great watching a director have such a clear vision about what they're trying to say. Season 7 of Black Mirror is a return to form, and even features a sequel to one of our favourite episodes of all time. This season of Daredevil really missed the mark for us. It felt cobbled together and incoherent. And it seemed to forget why we actually like watching the show. #justiceforfoggy Check out Lonnie’s other podcast: @ imissyouman Hit us up on Twitter: @ionlylikeyoupod Email us: slpodcasting@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Season 3 of White Lotus didn't blow us away, mostly because a significant chunk of the characters were just spinning their wheels for the whole season. Drop was a bit of fun! We're not sure it was much more than that, but Meghann Fahy is amazing as always, and that is enough for us. We're back! Thank you for bearing with us as we took a brief hiatus to move recording studios. Season 2 of #Severance had some incredibly high highs and some incredibly low lows. We think it mostly stuck the landing though, with one of the most iconic endings in television history. It's such a huge topic and a difficult one to get right, especially when confined within the boundaries of a particular form. But is it any deeper than a Law & Order episode, underneath it all? We're chatting about Adolescence this week. The Prestige TV podcast episode Lonnie mentioned. Black Bag was unfortunately a real disappointment for us. It wasn't very thrilling, it wasn't very sexy, and—crucially—there was hardly any spying! Mickey 17 had everything going for it: an amazing director, a stellar performance from Robert Pattinson, and a cool concept. But it didn't quite hit the mark for us. CW: Sexual assault. We wanted to like The Brutalist so badly, but even Guy Pearce's brilliant performance couldn't save this one for us. An erotic thriller that wasn't that thrilling or erotic? We're chatting Babygirl this week and of course returning to our much-loved segment: Wig Watch. Senaai found the milk video. It's Oscars season! We're releasing our 2025 Oscars pod a little early so you can listen to our (completely accurate) predictions! In short, Anora FTW, Emilia Pérez for the snub, and A Complete Unknown for the sweep. A Complete Unknown is pretty much as perfect a biopic as you can get, with incredible performances from the cast, maybe even earning Timothée his first Oscar. It's a disaster. A sacrilege. They've taken our beloved bear and turned him into nothing more than a predictable children's film with no soul. A Real Pain was such a beautiful film, so deftly handled and a masterclass on direction. Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg hit it out of the park. Senaai grapples with her feelings over why exactly she hated Wicked: Part 1 so much. Was it the lighting? The cast? The inexplicable reason to make Defying Gravity last a billion hours? Or maybe, it's all those reasons and more. Leena Norms's video on reviews of the book Wicked offers some valuable insights, as does her video on the film: Reading BRUTAL reviews of my favourite books Why the Wicked...

We're kicking off 2025 with a review of Anora, a film that is unobtrusive yet surprising. Check out Lonnie’s other podcast: @ imissyouman Hit us up on Twitter: @ionlylikeyoupod Email us: slpodcasting@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
