This week we finally get to talk about one of my favourite composers for this year's Masters of VGM. Considering how prolific he is I don't feel like Richard Jacques gets brought up in the conversation apart from Sonic R (and rightly so) so I wanted to do a bit of a dive into other games he does and really highlight the broadness of styles and a real ear for other people's sounds that makes him a...

Today we're joined by our friend Ryder to talk about the Yakuza: Like a Dragon soundtrack. As I'm still not very familiar with the series it was good to have a guide through this game's music which is uniformly excellent. There's definitely plenty more great tunes in the series too so I'm looking forward to digging a bit deeper 00:00:00 Shounanno Kaze, Yasutaka Nakata - Ichibanka 00:00:04 57 Talk...

This week we're joined by Brian of the Misplaced Musings podcast to talk about Airforce Delta. A cool little fight sim in the style of Ace Combat that similarly has some kick ass tunes. I initially messed up the recording of this episode at first and completely neglected to check that I was being recorded so we had to reconvene and do this episode again, thankfully the music still whips the second...

This week we're joined by our friend Niamh to talk about some Ys soundtracks! Specifically those for 1, 2 and Origins. Originally I was just going to make it 1 + 2 as they're basically one game anyway, but Niamh suggested adding Origin due to the more direct connection this game has to 1 + 2, and the fact that it does have quite a few of the same tracks re-arranged. It's a great soundtrack besides...

This week we're joined by Jay Brandstetter to talk about some Bomberman music. The incredible Bomberman Hero soundtrack is full of great tracks in a mix of electronic music styles: breaks, jungle, techno and acid house among others. I love talking about the crossover of electronic music and vgm so this episode was great fun to record! 00:00:00 June Chikuma - Foehn 00:02:37 Talk 01 00:09:59 June Ch...

Going back to the Final Fantasy well for this episode. I had gotten into listening to this soundtrack at work and sort of pushed everything aside to do an episode on the soundtrack because it's long been one of my favourites in the series. 00:00:00 Shuffle or Boogie 00:02:05 Talk 1 00:13:16 Blue Fields 00:14:46 Find Your Way 00:18:33 Balamb GARDEN 00:22:01 Fisherman's Horizon 00:25:36 Talk 2 00:32...

My good friend Dave joins us for a fun conversation on Commodore 64 music. I personally am less familiar with the music of this system so it was nice of Dave to provide a playlist and guide us. 00:00:00 Jonathan Dunn - Ocean Loader 5 00:03:00 Talk 1 00:17:18 Tamayo Kawamoto - BGM 1 00:18:26 Rob Hubbard - Commando 00:22:29 Rob Hubbard - Monty On The Run 00:28:29 Rob Hubbard - One Man And His Droid...

This week we're joined by famed Youtubist Kay of Kay and Skittles. When we started this pod they immediately got in contact and insisted we have them on for a Metal Gear Rising Revengeance episode. A game we all love that's seen a bit of a resurgence in recent years — not so much for its soundtrack — but as we discuss, the songs mirror the story and themes of the game quite strongly. The EDM infle...

Having a spooky February with this Silent Hill 2 episode. We had to bring in a pinch hitter for this one so my immediate thought went to Silent Hill 2, one of my favourite games and favourite soundtracks. Akira Yamaoka's moody, atmospheric tunes are dripping with menace but are still incredibly listenable and tuneful. 00:00:00 Akira Yamaoka - Promise (Reprise) 00:01:45 Talk 1 00:11:57 Akira Yamaok...

Shifting gear again for another bit of a grab bag episode. There are so many different versions of Tetris and many of them have really great soundtracks either to keep you chill or ramp up the tension while you play so I just wanted to highlight some of my own favourites. As I mentioned, no Tetris Effect here since I'm saving that for something more focused but otherwise please enjoy! Also, to my...

Note - I'm renaming this as a Mini as I think I want to try doing some occasional shorter episodes for games that don't have very long soundtracks. Will see how it pans out but for now let's consider this one to be Mini Episode 1 A little break from the format here to talk about DubWars, a neat - if a bit broken, I couldn't get it to run on my computer - rhythm/shooter hybrid. The music is all ver...

Let's get jacked on Karmotrine and stumble into the cool night air of a dystopian city while listening to some dope tunes with the Va11 Hall-a, a Cyberpunk bartending visual novel. 00:00:00 Every Day Is Night 00:03:42 Talk 1 00:12:12 Welcome To Va-11 Hall-A 00:15:14 Safe Haven 00:17:50 Karmotrine Dream 00:20:10 A Gaze That Invited Disaster 00:23:47 A Neon Glow Lights The Way 00:26:16 Talk 2 00:34:...

This soundtrack is basically the reason this podcast exists. After almost no convincing we are joined by our good friend Conqy to talk about Amon Tobin's masterpiece soundtrack to Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. 00:00:00 The Lighthouse 00:05:04 Talk 01 00:16:09 El Cargo 00:20:28 Ruthless 00:25:37 Kokubo Sosho Battle (adapted from Cougar Merkin) 00:29:48 Talk 02 00:44:03 The Clean Up 00:5059 Displaced...

It's time to go goblin mode! They said it could never be done but we're doing the entire soundtrack from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World The Game. I couldn't bring myself to cut any tracks so we just said 'fuck it' and did them all (as it turns out there is now a bunch more music available for this game that was literally finally released the day we recorded.) Anyway, this soundtrack rules so let's ge...

This week is our first guest episode! Rude fox Alton joins us to talk about Arcanum. A cool game with a cool soundtrack. Written by Ben Houge and performed by a string quartet the soundtrack is atmospheric and moody as heck. 00:00:00 Ben Houge - Arcanum 00:02:33 Talk 1 00:13:15 Ben Houge - Tarant 00:15:21 Ben Houge - The Tarant Sewers 00:17:33 Ben Houge - Caladon 00:20:11 Ben Houge - Caladon Catac...

This week we get Digitally Devilish, Seymour. Cracking open the box marked "Shoji Meguro" means everyone is gonna hoot and holler because it's not the Persona 5 soundtrack — but hear me out — these soundtracks bang and deserve your time. Join us as we go Jack Frost mode on these bad boys. 00:00:00 Pray 00:01:36 Talk 01 00:09:28 Muladhara 00:11:27 Svadhisthana 00:14:55 Sahasrara 00:16:50 Manipura 0...

This week we have a theme episode — music from licensed games that is better than it has any right to be. Join us as we explore some great tunes from some maybe not so great games. 00:00 Unknown - Track 5 03:45 Talk 1 11:03 Kenji Yamazaki - Building Under Construction 14:29 Kenji Yamazaki - Inside Building 16:19 Kenji Yamazaki - Flying Machine and Mechwarrior 19:41 Hi-Tech-Icchy, Pro-Mars - Burste...

This week we take flight, or at least, we manage those who do? KOEI's Air Management games may not be the best known of KOEI's stable of games but they might have the best music, and that's what we care about on this pod. 00:00 Main Menu (PSX) 07:46 Main Menu (PC-98) 10:24 Main Menu (X68000) 13:01 Europe (X68000) 15:15 Europe (PSX) 17:11 Japan (PC-98) 18:59 Japan (PSX) 28:11 Latin America (Genesis...
