Only through the Spirit is it possible to live a new life in Christ. He is our comforter and our strength. He unifies us for his purposes and his glory, and gifts us for the task ahead.

The Holy Spirit works to bring us to salvation and continues his work beyond salvation. The Spirit indwells the believer and brings about conviction of sin in order to conform us to the image of God that we had at creation. Embracing and cooperating with the work of the Spirit in our sanctification should be the goal and joy of every believer.

All throughout Scripture, we find that the Holy Spirit is the person of the trinity through which the desires of the Father, spoken through the Son, are creatively established. From the creation of the heavens and the earth, to the creation of Adam, to the re-creation of mankind, the Holy Spirit is powerfully at work to bring life.

The doctrine of the trinity and divinity of the Holy Spirit are necessary for a proper understanding of Christian faith and practice. There is one God, existing in three persons, the Holy Spirit is God.

Peter is wrapping up this section by talking about the completeness of God’s victory for the believer in Jesus Christ. In the end, all angels and rulers and authorities will be put under his feet, and so we can expect to share in that same victory.

Christians are called to live out a different type of life than the culture around us. We are blessed by God when we bless others. We get to share in the blessings of our faith by sharing with others how to find the ultimate blessing, a new life in Christ.

Today’s topic of wives being subject to their husbands is challenging, to women who do not have godly husbands. But, take heart! You can woo your husband to Christ by your godly character and conduct. Ultimately, the goal should be to adorn yourself with the type of inner beauty that is pleasing to Christ. 

Although it is hard, we can submit to our governing authorities, knowing that God has instituted and limited their powers. Thankfully, even though we may face injustice in this life, we serve a perfect king whose authority will cause every knee to bow on the day of the Lord.

Peter reminds believers that because they belong to Christ, they should live differently in a world that is not their home. They are called to take the battle against sin seriously and live honorable lives in front of others so their lives may point to Jesus.

We need to continually determine which kingdom we are going to pursue. Jesus tells us we cannot serve both God and wealth. Part of learning to live in the kingdom of God is learning to be generous out of our trust in God and our confidence in his provision.

We want to leave a legacy for the Gospel here in Grove City. We want to plant churches, and reach people for Christ, but discipleship and investing in people must be our most important investment. 

God is demonstrating that in Christ all the OT prophecies are being fulfilled, not in Israel but in the Church of Jesus Christ. Because of that, we see our privileged status as believers.

If we’re to be holy as Christ commands, we must learn to think rightly and act wisely while being sustained by the right motivations. In this passage, Peter addresses how we are to work toward becoming more like Christ in the land of exile. 

The salvation that Christ gives results in an inner change that affects the outward life. By drinking deeply of the Word of God we will begin to see real change in our lives and affections.

God’s plan of salvation has been revealed to us believers from start to finish. Although we live in the present, the truth of past prophecies builds confidence for our future inheritance.

Life involves trials, even for those who are beloved of God. We can have joy, even in our trials. All of this life’s trials are temporary, since this life is short and we can be sure that God will use them to accomplish his purposes. We are exiles in a foreign land, but we have every reason to bless God! Through Jesus’ death and resurrection we are born again. We now have a hope waiting for us that this world cannot touch.

The apostle Peter writes a book to a group of churches in modern day Turkey. In it, he reminds them that even though they are exiles in this world, that they are also chosen by God.

Sex is a part of God’s plan for the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman. Sex unites two people, both body and soul, and so we must be careful to keep it within the bounds of marriage. In marriage sex should be frequent, patient, and giving.

Problems exist within any marriage. At the heart of a great number of marriage problems are an unwillingness to prioritize your spouse, commit to loving them as they change throughout life, and trusting God’s good plan in submission and servant leadership.

Because Christ is ultimate, singleness is not a problem to fix, a season to waste, or a sign that someone is incomplete. Whether singleness lasts a season or a lifetime, our identity, fulfillment, intimacy, purpose, and hope are ultimately found in Jesus, not in a relationship status.

Marriage is meant to be sanctifying. As two people come together in honest and loyal friendship and commitment, they help one another toward the common goal of the upward call of sanctification.

A marriage commitment is based on a Biblical understanding of love. Love is not a feeling, but an action. Marriage is a lifelong commitment to act in a loving way toward another person.
