Coffee with a Podcaster

I've been podcasting since 2020 and produced professionally for clients since 2022. During that time, I've mastered my own workflows and learned about all the aspects of audio improvement and podcasting tech. I have created my own podcasts on varying topics and helped others do the same. But there is more to podcasting than just the platform. I believe that there is an untapped aspect of podcasting and the professions found in podcasting that we all avoid in favour of discussions about effective marketing, monetization and engagement. We never follow "The Why".On Coffee with a Podcaster, I wil...

Hyberbolic Clickbait Means They Don't Care About You 10.07.2026

I read a LinkedIn Post today that started with, "Your branded Podcast is Dead because..." blah blah blah. Calling time of death on podcasting for one reason or another is a chief marketing tactic to bring about existential dread in a podcasting world of uncertainty. We all know that podcasting may never die. So what does it mean when we see these posts? In this episode you'll get a dramatic readin...

Don't be Steven Bartlett. Or Joe Rogan. 09.07.2026

It's so easy to be a fan of Jay Shetty, Steven Bartlett or Joe Rogan, and be inspired to create a successful show. A similar show. ... The same show. This episode is a quick reality check to remind you that you can copy them to get started, but YOUR podcast has to be made by you. You can't be Joe Rogan. You just won't find your happiness that way. Have a question for me? Email: hello@matthewbliss....

The Average is not Ideal & Taking Responsibility for Your Advice 08.07.2026

The moment that I saw how PodcastingStack.com was constructed, it irked me. Not only does it brandish recommendations for podcasters without apologies, but it minimises the power of learning how and what to choose for equipment and software for your circumstances. In this episode, I level my criticisms against the website (despite the good intentions) and share what you should take away from it, w...

TRAILER: Anti-Optimisation. Pro-Optimism. Love your Podcast Again. 07.07.2026

The Podcasting Industry has supported open-standard audio and video production for independent podcasters, business owners and creative minds across the world. But the industry has changed. Podcasting is no longer about creativity, art and finding your people. Its littered with million-dollar companies driving market share, influencers pushing “content engine” products by inventing trends and tips...

My New Podcast: "RE:Thinking Podcasting" 12.06.2025

First of all, thank you for staying subscribed to Coffee with a Podcaster - I really appreciate it! CWAP will be staying in hiatus while I think about retooling and rethinking what the show will be like in future. I've now begun a new podcast that aligns much closer to what I'd like to contribute to the podcasting world: "RE:Thinking Podcasting". Where philosophy and Socratic thinking meets the wo...

Video Podcasts: Let's unpack it a little bit... 20.01.2025

People have been talking about video in podcasting as a necessity since YouTube announced its intention to make podcasting its pet-project. BUT its just not that simple... I want to unpack a couple of discussions and arguments about video for podcasting that are thrown around a lot, and need a bit of unpacking. Social media comment threads are terrible ways to discuss both sides of a topic. So tha...

VOICE NOTE: Responding to Bamby Media's 2024 Wrap-Up... 17.01.2025

I saw Brianna Ansaldo wrap up her Bamby Media's insights in a Pros and Cons list here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eamSagYs63g&ab_channel=BambyMedia . I think she's aspirational as a business owner, a podcast producer and generally as a person. So I wanted to share some common thoughts that I had from the video. Coz why shouldn't an audio episode respond to a video?! 😊 Check out https://w...

Why Brain.FM helps me Edit Podcasts Faster! 27.08.2024

The cafe was closed last week! What was that about?! Anyway, I'll share my thoughts from last week today. I wanted to take some time to justify and explain the affiliate that I tack onto the top and bottom of each episode: Brain. FM . Its a music player with unique effects involving "entrainment" that utilises theta, beta, alpha waves to improve focus on a task while you listen or relax while you...

The truth about Headphones for Recording Podcast Episodes 20.08.2024

There is a lot of advice out there about which headphones to buy for your podcast recordings, but there is a single, pre-eminent truth about podcasting headphones. And you'll find it hard to believe, but in this episode I tell you the best way to go! This comes in handy when trying to get your gear ready for recording. Editing podcast episodes and dialogue is a different story, so we'll cover it o...

It's Hard to Talk About Social Media... 15.08.2024

I'm putting my neck out here - in the cafe today I'm talking about the dangers and downfalls of using social media as a way to connect with our podcasting community and what to look for so we can avoid anger, conflict and unnecessaryily wasted energy on weird two-sided arguments. Facebook has been a big proponent of these issues for me of late, but they apply to all platforms in which people chat...

Creating smiles with your Compression! (Part 2) 13.08.2024

Compression is a "hot" topic, and this is Part 2 of my discussion about how it works and how you can get started understanding it better. In this episode, I talk about: The aspects of a plugin (Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release, Gain) A quick roundup of how it works How you should practise it yourself What compression ISN'T (ie. Limiter, Normalisation, Dynamic Gates) YouTubers I recommend for Comp...

Treating Your Throat with Kindness and Care! (care of Isaac Coffman) 08.08.2024

I'm bringing a listener message to the cafe today! Isaac Coffman of LadX Media got in touch at https://www.speakpipe.com/CoffeePodcaster to ask about the exercises that I do to take care of my voice before and during recording. After my throat infection, it became something important to consider but you might be surprised with what I say about it... If you've got a question, make sure you send me...

Compression got me all hot and bothered... 06.08.2024

Today I'm talking about Compression! It's one of the things that is talked about a lot in podcasting as a necessary step, but do you know what its actually doing? This is Part 1 of my coffee chat with you about what compression is, what it's for and the best way to visualise it (as much as we can in an audio medium, of course!). Here's AudioHaze's Compression video I mentioned in the episode: http...

Not Your Average Room Treatment 12.04.2024

"My microphone sounds really echoey... how do I remove that echo?" This is one of the most common questions in podcasting forums, and there will most often be two answers: Buy a Dynamic Microphone Treat your Room The latter is what I'll address in this episode, as I've got experience spending hundreds of dollars treatment, and then as little as possible due to housing constraints. Listen in for my...

The Podcasts or Episodes Episode 10.04.2024

Sometimes when someone tells you about a thing that you never realised existed, all of a sudden you'll see it everywhere (particularly when driving!). This episode is a question for you as a podcaster or podcast listener: do you call the subsequent released audio recordings on podcast feeds as... ❓"Episodes", or ❓"Podcasts? I have often heard them interchangeably and I often wonder which one is...

Does Automation mean you don't care? 04.04.2024

I am going to challenge you in this episode. You might be using AI or systems to automate tasks in your workflow, and preserving your time is important to make room for creativity and content. But is your automating of that task killing a potential connection with your listener? In this episode, I pitch the idea that when there is no intentional input from us as podcasters in our generated assets,...

Transcription is more valuable than you think... 02.04.2024

Transcription is a word podcasters are familiar with these days, either through AI or online podcast editing tools. We often don't think about the true value in these text-based versions of our podcasts though! In this coffee convo, we have a talk about Accessibility being the primary purpose for transcription and opening up your audience potential, followed by the value of having a written versio...

Dodging Podfade when you start your Podcast! 20.03.2024

Welcome to the very first coffee chat with me, Matthew Bliss! In this episode, we're having a chat about how I'll be avoiding Podfade and the expectations I'm setting for myself to ensure the podcast can...
