Still Buffering

We love talking about music and all our favorite artists on our show, and sometimes it's because their work means a whole lot more to us than we even realize, and that's true for Tey this week as we dive into the discography of Elliot Smith. It's time for another one of those somewhat spooky, kinda gross, pretty funny, and surprisingly meaningful movies from the 90s that all the Smirl siblings were introduced to at maybe too young of an age, it's Death Becomes Her! It was a weird reality/fiction/murder mystery/game show that only aired for one season on ABC when Rileigh was 12, but that doesn't mean she wasn't (and frankly still is) obsessed with it; it's Whodunnit! There's just...a LOT to unpack here, so let's get into it. Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas Help support this show and unlock bonus content! Become a member at https://maximumfun.o...

It's still Pride Month, but this time it's Pride: Secret Contraband Music Edition instead of Pride: Pirate Edition! So, of course, we're listening to the quintessential secret message music of Teylor's youth: Ani DiFranco. Happy Pride Month! To celebrate this joyous time of year, we're diving into the pirate-filled adventure that is Our Flag Means Death, because it's gay pirates! How could we not? Well, if Rileigh doesn't have a new Taylor Swift album to make her siblings listen to, she's gonna find the next closest thing, which is of course, a new Harry Styles album! From sad jams to no thoughts just vibes tunes, this album has lots to discuss, so let's dive in, shall we? It's yet another super influential media moment from the younger years of the older Smirl siblings that's been rebooted for the modern age: it's Chip and Dale! Sydnee and Teylor both had STRONG feelings about this one back in the day (most specifically about Gadget) so of course we had to revisit the reboot. It was the multiplayer video game experience that defined the younger years of the older Smirl siblings, complete with such classic bits as DK mode and slappers only: it's Goldeneye! (Those GRAPHICS though...) CW: This video game is a first person shooter game, meaning there is brief mention of video game violence/guns. Rileigh felt a need to introduce her siblings to a movie she watched incessantly with friends in high school, neglecting to remember just how ridiculously sad it is, so she's sorry about that. Also, discussion on weird British party games takes up a good amount of this episode, so buckle in. Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas Help support this show and unlock bonus content! We've done it, we've found and discovered and dissected the meaning of the 80s cartoon movie: "The Last Unicorn." It's not all rainbows and unicorns, but it IS full of mystical scenes and musical numbers. Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas Help support this show and unlock bonus content! Even though Sydnee brought this one to the table, it's a movie that the Smirl siblings have long associated with their mom, and there are a lot of reasons why. So, to celebrate only one week until Mother's Day AND MaxFunDrive, let's talk about Cher! Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas Help support this show and unlock bonus content! It's that time of year for summer theatre again for Rileigh, so why not take some time to talk about this year's musical? Teylor is always introducing their sisters to cool, meaningful, and just overall really good stuff from their life, and this week is certainly no different. This album was new to Sydnee and Rileigh, while packing a whole lot of meaning for our middle sibling, so come check it out with us! It's honestly remarkable that we haven't talked about Kevin Smith movies yet, so we had to start with Sydnee's all-time favorite out of them all. Plus, little kid fight club. She was making some of the world's most popular pop music of the early 2010s, when Rileigh was probably too young to be listening to some of it, but that didn't stop her from becoming one of her biggest fans; it's Katy Perry! She had some huge pop hits, and some big spinning peppermints on her bras, she was everything Rileigh wanted to be, obviously.  Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvella...

As usual, Teylor has introduced their siblings to a really great anime they had never heard of before, and this time it's a spoooky one! Well, more so unsettling and thrilling than spook, but great nonetheless.  Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas Help support this show and unlock bonus content! Rileigh legitimately had no clue that Gwen Stefani was in a band before she went solo...like really no idea. So obviously her siblings had to rectify this massive gap in her late 90s and early 2000s education. Music: "Baby You Change Your Mind" by Nouvellas Help support this show and unlock bonus content! We all know that Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt are eternally quirky-cute and boyish-cute, respectively, so we simply must take a look back at one of Rileigh's first favorite non-love story love stories. Well, we did it, we FINALLY said a bad word on this show. Actually a lot of times, because we're talking about Jackass! It's about time we dove into the classic "giant party at the end of senior year" movie genre, and what better starting point than Can't Hardly Wait? It's even got all the teen stereotypes that really aren't all that accurate, including our favorite, Cynical Velma. Disney Channel original movie musicals defined Rileigh's childhood, and almost none more so than Camp Rock. Starring the Jonas Brothers, of course, and Demi Lovato, this movie was the pinnacle of youth for a young Rilo who wanted to attend the real Camp Rock more than anything. So many of the things that Sydnee and Teylor loved most in the past have made resurgences among the cool new teen generations, and My Chemical Romance is one of the biggest!
