#050 - 2024-04-13 - Genesis 22.15-22.24 13.04.2024

We looked at the result of Abraham's willingness to trust God - even to the point of offering his son as a sacrifice. Abraham had kept his part of the covenant (walk before me and be blameless) and God recommitted to fulfilling his promises. We also looked at some new testament scripture that shows that Paul recognized the ongoing validity of 'the law'. (More to come...)

#049 - 2024-03-30 - Genesis 22.12-22.14 30.03.2024

We examined how this story of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son was actually intended to show that God is not like other gods and does not want human sacrifice. We also studied what Paul meant when he said he 'became' a Jew, a proselyte, a Gentile, weak, etc...

#048 - 2024-03-23 - Genesis 22.11-22.11 23.03.2024

Well, we did it again. The conversation on the New Testament (Hebrews) took up our entire time. We're done with Hebrews for now, so we should be able to get back to making progress in Genesis. We studied how it was that Jesus was able to secure our forgiveness and redemption acting as both the High Priest and the sacrifice, applying His blood to the altar in the heavenly tabernacle. Good stuff...

#047 - 2024-03-16 - Genesis 22.8-22.11 16.03.2024

We looked deeply at the faith of Abraham - and Isaac! When we say we are saved by faith, Galatians 3:7 infers that it is a faith like Abraham's (sons of Abraham). These passages give us an amazing and complex image of what that faith looks like. We also learned more about the earthly Tabernacle and how it helps us understand what God/Jesus have done for us.

#046 - 2024-03-09 - Genesis 22.7-22.7 09.03.2024

This week, we got so into our look at a New Testament scripture we never even made it to our Genesis study! We discussed how it is that this new High Priest (Jesus, after the order of Melchizedek) operates on our behalf and how that relates to the Levitical Priesthood and to us.

#045 - 2024-03-02 - Genesis 22.1-22.7 02.03.2024

We look at Abraham's 10th test - God commanding Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. We learn much about Abraham's character, God's character, and who we should be. We also began looking at the writer of Hebrew's argument for Jesus as eternal High Priest and what that means for us.

#044 - 2024-02-24 - Genesis 21.22-21.34 24.02.2024

We examined the treaty/covenant between Abimelech and Abraham. We noted Abraham's unconditional agreement to enter the covenant and his later negotiations to secure his water rights. We also talked through the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15. Why did they meet, what was the decision and what did it mean for the community of Jew and Gentile believers?

#043 - 2024-02-17 - Genesis 21.10-21.21 17.02.2024

We covered the story of Abraham having to send away his first born son, Ishmael. Both Sarah and God seemed to think it was the right thing to do (God promised to care for him). This was a big test for Abraham and he responded quickly and completely. We also examined the wall of hostility that has been broken down according to Paul in Ephesians 2:11-22.

#042 - 2024-02-10 - Genesis 21.1-21.9 10.02.2024

We see the righteousness of God on full display as He does exactly as He has promised - Sarah conceives and gives birth to Isaac. There is joy all around - or so it seems - for a while. We also saw how Paul starts his letter to the Ephesians by (v3-14) by making clear distinctions between Israel and the nations through his use of pronouns. This sets up Paul's overall message of distinctions wi...

#041 - 2024-02-03 - Genesis 20.8-20.18 03.02.2024

We studied Abimelech's response to God (and Abraham). We also noted that his innocence may not have been as thorough as we first thought. Finally, we noted the parallels with the Abram and Sarah in Egypt story. We also looked at Peter's vision in Acts 10:1 - 11:18 and how the real message of that story is all about Gentile inclusion in Israel (i.e. the elect assembly) by faith (and has not...

#040 - 2024-01-27 - Genesis 20.1-20.7 27.01.2024

We follow Abraham to Gerar where he appears to use Sarah poorly a second time. We learned of consequences for even unintentional sin and we get some indications that Abimelech's innocence may not be as complete as it first appears. We also learned a little something about Paul's everyday life as a (Jewish) believer.

#039 - 2023-11-18 - Genesis 19.27-19.38 18.11.2023

We cover the end of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah - Lot and his daughters escaping to the hills - and the inception story of the Moabites and the Ammonites.

#038 - 2023-11-11 - Genesis 19.14-19.26 11.11.2023

We discuss Lot's escape from Sodom with his immediate family and the subsequent loss of his wife.

#037 - 2023-11-04 - Genesis 19.1-19.13 04.11.2023

We follow 2 of Abraham's 3 visitors to Sodom. We discuss their encounter with Lot and with the people (men) of Sodom.

#036 - 2023-10-28 - Genesis 18.15-18.33 28.10.2023

We examine Abraham's negotiation with God and learn a surprising amount about God's nature and character.

#035 - 2023-10-21 - Genesis 18.1-18.14 22.10.2023

We discuss Abraham's three visitors, the fact that one of them is God (but in what way, exactly?), and the all important theme that God sees, hears, and knows all (a component of the fear of the Lord).

#034 - 2023-10-14 - Genesis 17.14-17.27 14.10.2023

We finish our look at God's covenant (with Abraham). We examine how Sarah and Ishmael are associated with that covenant and Abraham's eagerness and quickness to obey.

#033 - 2023-10-07 - Genesis 17.1-17.13 08.10.2023

We take a deep dive into God's covenant that He made with Abraham - who was responsible for what, how long it would be in effect and the sign of that covenant.

#032 - 2023-09-30 - Genesis 16.13-17.1 30.09.2023

We examined the remaining interaction between Hagar and God and the unexpected - she named God! We also began our look at God preparing to enter into an official covenant with Abram.

#031 - 2023-09-23 - Genesis 16.5-16.12 23.09.2023

We studied Sarai's (and Abram's) response to Hagar's pregnancy and (possibly) Hagar's actions. We also looked at Hagar's interaction with the Angel of the Lord and the promises regarding Ishmael.

#030 - 2023-09-16 - Genesis 15.15-16.4 16.09.2023

We finish up our walk through (pun intended) the ritual of the land grant treaty between God and Abram. We then looked at Test #5 for Abram - Hagar.

#029 - 2023-09-09 - Genesis 15.1-15.14 09.09.2023

We discuss Abram questioning God's promises and God responding by making a land grant treaty with him. God also provides Abram insight into the future.

#028 - 2023-09-02 - Genesis 14.18-14.24 02.09.2023

We examine Abram's interaction with two Kings. First, the King of Salem and then the King of Sodom. We also discussed the parallels between this King and Priest of Salem and the ultimate King and Priest (Messiah).

#027 - 2023-08-19 - Genesis 14.4-14.17 19.08.2023

We discuss the battle of the kings and Abram's rescue of Lot (we also found a lot of good "male" and "man" stuff to talk about).

#026 - 2023-08-12 - Genesis 13.7-14.3 12.08.2023

We looked at the split between Abram and Lot and God giving Abram a 'new start'. We also did some introductory look into the upcoming story of the battle of the Kings.
