Men Behaving Badly - The Senate Edition 16.11.2017

As the MOMocrats went on the air last week, news broke of Roy Moore's past predilection for dating (and assaulting) underage girls when he was a 30-something district attorney in Alabama. That story has dominated this week's political news to the point that few of us have given much thought to the awful GOP tax bill or whatever it is Trump did on his Asian trip. And today, Al Franken is...

After the Elections: Good Day, Sunshine 09.11.2017

The nation still faces the same problems it had one week ago, beginning with the party in power and includes the rift among those on the left who are fighting to win the country back. But the resounding citizen participation of this week's off-year elections (especially in Virginia) give renewed hope to MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills - who promise that there wil...

The More You Know: Paul Manafort Edition 02.11.2017

The MOMocrats return from a two-week lay-off with the situation eerily the same: The news cycle is crazy fast. This week began with the indictment of Paul Manafort and two others from the Trump campaign, and each day, there are shocking new revelations. Congress is still trying to pass a tax cut for the rich and sell it as a benefit for the middle class. The President is quick to condemn a terrori...

If At First You Don't Succeed in Congress, Sign an Executive Order 13.10.2017

Trump promised to get rid of Obamacare on Day One - and soon discovered what the rest of us who pay attention already knew: Healthcare is complicated. And it isn't easy to erase a law that has helped millions of Americans obtain health insurance for the first time, even when you've gerrymandered the rules so you can do it with a simple majority. So he's taken to destroying the law b...

Las Vegas Was the Site of Real American Carnage 05.10.2017

Donald Trump's inaugural address tried to make the case that American cities are rife with "carnage" in the streets, which he dogwhistled was due to immigrants and people of color. The statistics of mass shootings in the US prove otherwise, and Las Vegas is just the latest and most horrifying example. Once again, the message of GOP talking points is "now is not the time" t...

Is Puerto Rico Going to Be Remembered as Trump's Katrina? 28.09.2017

Help is finally on its way to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands - a staggering nine days after Hurricane Maria became the SECOND Category 4 storm to hit the US territories in the space of a couple of weeks. There's a lot of speculation as to why it has taken the Trump Administration so long to respond to this disaster, and MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills have...

Ways the New Obamacare Repeal Bill is Like the Walking Dead 20.09.2017

The Senate Republicans have one last chance to repeal Obamacare before September 30, and by golly -- this time, they are determined to do it. If the saga of taking away healthcare from Americans reminds you of a zombie movie, you are not alone -- and if this one passes, we are ALL gonna be the Walking Dead, say MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills, who talk about actions y...

DACA May Actually Make America Great Again 14.09.2017

Could Trump actually do something right by making DACA law? Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi think so - even if it will still be a huge hurdle to get a bill approved in Congress. In the meantime, MOMocrats Aliza Worthington, Karoli, and Donna Schwartz Mills are enjoying the angst yesterday's announcement has caused among the #MAGA crowd. They discuss this and other political developments of the...

MOMocrats MOMochat: Politics from a Progressive Point of View 07.09.2017

A second superstorm in a fortnight - fed by a rise in ocean waters and temperatures - is barrelling towards the United States. And climate change deniers are accusing the media and "meterorologic industrial complex" of creating these weather disasters, which sane people understand may become our new reality. All of this amid this week's dizzying political announcements on DACA, the...

Harvey is Finally Moving On - But His Effect Will Be With Us For Years 31.08.2017

Harvey dropped the equivalent of more than two Great Salt Lakes onto Texas before finally moving east as a tropical depression - and made history as the most expensive natural disaster in the nation's history. The timing could not have been better (or worse) for Congress, which will have budget, the debt ceiling, and tax reform at the top of their fall agenda. And it will cause a flurry of ne...

The Mr. Hyde Presidency of Donald Trump 24.08.2017

The President began the week by giving a somber, thoughtful foreign policy speech on Afghanistan, which is the longest-running war in US history. He read from the teleprompter, didn't stray, and received high marks. On Tuesday, just eight months into his administration, he held a 2020 campaign rally in Phoenix, where he reverted to form, misquoting his own remarks after Charlottesville, and r...

Both Sides Now: Trump's Most Deplorable Week Yet 17.08.2017

The horrific events in Charlottesville could have been a unifying moment for Donald Trump, and his advisers tried to steer him into a replica of a statesman. But Donald Trump doesn't like to be told what to do and so he did what he does best: support the most deplorable of his base and rant about the violence that was the fault of "both sides" and the "alt-left." You know,...

Talk Us Off the Healthcare Ledge 27.07.2017

The MOMocrats have been following the healthcare saga closely - after all, (as women and mothers who are older than 25), Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills are automatically saddled with pre-existing conditions. So do their families. And even a so-called "skinny repeal" of the Affordable Care Act could be a disaster for their health and financial security. They discuss t...

Night of the Walking Healthcare Bill 20.07.2017

The GOP's healthcare plan is like a zombie movie - each time you think it's dead, it rises again. Conservatives are raging mad over the failure of the Republican Congress to repeal the ACA, and they're not afraid to target the moderate members of their caucus for actually caring about their constituents' well being. And yesterday, the President had all the party's Senators...

Nothing Is Happening This Week 12.07.2017

The news this year keeps on coming at a crazy pace, and MOMocrats Aliza Worthington, Karoli, and Donna Schwartz Mills do their best to keep up. Collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 election? That's looking more and more concrete, thanks to Donald Trump, Jr's smoking balalika emails showing his eagerness to hear dirt on Hillary, courtesy of the R...

Mitch McConnell's Not Done Trying to Kill Us 29.06.2017

The secret Senate bill to "repeal and replace" Obamacare was as sinister as the MOMocrats expected, especially when it comes to women's healthcare (and what would you expect when it was crafted behind closed doors by 13 men without any input from their female colleagues?) It didn't take long for Mitch McConnell to realize that he would not get the votes he needed to pass it wit...

The Outlook for Democrats is Not as Bad as You Think 22.06.2017

Jon Ossoff's loss in GA-6 left the White House gloating, Democrats panicking and pundits pronouncing that the party doesn't know how to win in the Age of Trump and should clean house - beginning with an ouster of Nancy Pelosi as House leader. "Poppycock," say the MOMocrats (the phrase they actually use is a lot stronger than that, but we're not certain it would be apprecia...

The Women Are Doing It For Themselves 15.06.2017

If there was one good thing to come out of the disappointing 2016 election, it's the tsunami of progressives - especially women - who are stepping up and running for office. MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills welcome one of those candidates: Laura Moser, candidate for Congress in Texas' 7th district. The MOMocrats will also touch upon the week's political...

James Comey's Big Day Did Not Disappoint 08.06.2017

Former FBI Director James Comey's testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee was so widely anticipated, that the three major broadcast networks dropped regular programming to cover it live -- something they've rarely done since the advent of cable news. And it was as dramatic as anticipated - especially after the early release of his printed opening statement yesterday, which rea...

People in Covfefe Houses Shouldn't Throw Covfefe 01.06.2017

Aside from his failed presidency, Donald Trump will go down in history as the originator of "covfefe," which translates to "another distraction from the issues at hand." Those issues include withdrawing from the Paris Accords, exempting his staff from ethics rules, destroying our public education system, resuming the failed war on drugs with tough sentences while allowing corpo...

Donald Trump Does NATO - And It's About What You'd Expect 25.05.2017

Donald Trump has been visiting with foreign leaders for the last week and managed not to do or say anything too embarrassing, which we realize is a low bar, but there you have it. And then today, he spoke at NATO. It was not good. Also not good are the continuing revelations about the Trump team and Russia, which may or may not be the reason that Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon were sent back to t...

No Politician In History Has Been Treated So Badly. Right. 18.05.2017

Donald Trump gave a commencement speech yesterday to graduates of the US Coast Guard Academy that quickly turned into a whine about how he has been treated by the media, with no acknowledgement that the problems plaguing his sinking ship of a White House are all self-inflicted. And as the day wore on, the pace of bad news for Trump just accelerated: Deputy Attorney General named respected former F...

Are We a Banana Republic Yet? 11.05.2017

Gee, what ever might the MOMocrats talk about this week? Has anything newsworthy happened? It starts with "C" and ends with "omey" and there is a chance the topic may make it's way onto our podcast this afternoon, along with Donald Trump's usual echoes of Nixon and the actions of tin-horn dictators around the world. MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwa...

Groundhog Day, Washington Style 04.05.2017

The big news in Congress today is that they voted on the AHCA. Again. Only this time, the House Republicans mustered the votes to repeal Obamacare and replace it with the latest version of Trumpcare. And no, they're not waiting around for the CBO to score the bill on costs and consequences, because that is what made everyone realize that it wasn't better than the healthcare law we alread...

You Can't Judge a Presidency by Its 1st 100 Days - But We'll Try 27.04.2017

Trump is right about one thing: You can't judge an entire presidency by its first 100 days. But it is a useful benchmark, and this administration has been spectacular in all its failures: From the executive orders that keep getting struck down in court to the failed healthcare proposal, to the paranoia and infighting within the White House, to enriching themselves from the trappings of the pr...
