low light mixes

It's been a little over a year since my last Sunday Morning Music mix so I figured we needed to revisit this beautiful series. This mix follows the same format as previous sets - a little jazz, some ambient and a few vocal tunes. There's not much else to say other than grab a cup of coffee, kick back and enjoy some Sunday Morning Music.   LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX: https://ecmrecords...

When Daniel wrote that he had a new mix based around silence I knew it would be good. Then I saw the tracklist and I knew it would be great. He includes cuts from some of my favorite artists - Halftribe, Innesti, Sonmi451, Loscil, and A Produce. The A Produce track is one of my favorite ambienbt tracks of all time. Here's what Daniel says about his new mix: Claude Debussy once wrote: “The music...

I bought a new mac mini recently and I have been transferring a ton of music to the new system. While cruising through the old files I discovered a folder called "NETLABELS." It's a fascinating collection of music the 2000s that was released on what were then known as "netlabels". I had a ball listening to some of it so I decided to make a mix.  There was a lot of music to sort through so I...

I haven't had much time or been motivated to create new mixes so far in the new year. But there's nothing like sub-zero temperatures and being cooped up indoors to get one in the mood for a good wintry mix. The temperature as I type this is -15 degrees with a wind chill of -40. 🥶 I've done these frigid temps themed mixes before and I'm always surprised at how well they come together. I start by...

One of my favorite genre rabbit holes that I went down in 2025 was instrumental rock music. That title covers a lot of styles from post-rock to stoner rock to prog rock to cosmic country to fusion to psych rock etc. I've always listened to music that falls into this category whether it's Khruangbin or Causa Sui or Oren Ambarchi but this year my interest in this genre exploded.  So I thought I wo...

Oh man, what a way to end the year! Erwin has been curating excellent Berlin-school mixes for us all year and now he finishes it off with this massive end-of-the-year update. I've been in this headspace for a while now so this perfectly satisfies my craving. Thanks to Erwin for a great year of electronic mixes.   Here what he has to say about this year-ender:   "Another smorgasbord of what the...

Not much to say in this post other than here is part two of my favorite ambient albums of 2025. I'll also repost the full list here with links. Alexander Knaifel - Chapter Eight Almost An Island - Almost An Island Andrew Heath - Signals and Codes Anthéne & Simon McCorry - Wellspring Bill Brennan and Andy McNeill - Dreaming In Gamelan Byron Metcalf - Spiral Exchange Clarice Jensen - In holi...

When end-of-the-year list season began I wasn't sure if I was going to do a favorite ambient albums list. I wasn't as locked into ambient as much this year as in the past. I spent most of my listening time in indie, jazz, and berlin-school. I had several ambient albums that would for sure make my list so I started with those and the next thing I knew - I had a list of 26 albums that are my 2025 fa...

This is a mix I originally created back in December of 2006, during my first year of posting mixes online. This one never made its way to Mixcloud so I figured, with all the cold and snow I'm getting in my neck of the woods, now would be a good time to resurrect this set. The original post here on the blog has a bad link to the mp3 so I wanted to post it her as well. It's interesting to see the ar...

I have a special treat for everyone with this new mix. It's a guest mix from friend of Low Light Mixes, Andy McNeill. Andy records as Maple Mountain Sunburst and has created two previous mixes for LLM and they are both excellent. You can find them here: http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2024/10/a-moon-full-of-stars-and-astral-cars-by.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2025/01/we-did-it-ag...

Between Erwin Broers & Paul Asbury Seaman I have been exposed to a ton of excellent berlin-school music over the last couple years. Erwin continues his great string of mixes with this new one featuring the music of Wolfram Spyra. I was totally unfamiliar with this music before hearing this mix and now I'm thankful for the introduction. Here's what Erwin says about this mix: "In the mid-1...

This is a perfect mix for floating in a floatation tank, drifting off to sleep, or viewing the northern lights(which we've had several nights of this year). All the music is from this year, much of it from the last few months. There's not much else to say other than kick your feet up, relax and float away.     My love for tribal ambient music, of course, starts with Steve Roach. Going back to Dreamtime Return, Desert Solitaire, Western Spaces, Origins, Strata, On This Planet, and The Dream Circle, just to name a few. I go through phases where I may tire of the style but I always come back to it, usually when a new record reminds me of how much I love the genre. In this case that new album is "A Path...

The guest mix hit parade continues! Right on the heels of his last train mix Paul gives another train-themed set. This is one more in line with many of Paul's other train mixes in that it's main genre is berlin-school. I have been on a berlin-school bender all year so I am excited for this one. Here's what Paul says about the mix: "You’re sitting on a grassy slope above the cottage, looking out...

Yorgos Dousos is a multi-instrumentalist and composer located in Athens. He plays flute and clarinet to combine Greek music tradition, European jazz, and ambient electronic into an inspired musical experience. I got to hear an advance copy of his latest album -  LUPUS, Love Under Pain, Upon Suffering  - I knew immediately that I had to reach out to Yorgos about a guest mix. And here it is! Here'...

We've had a nice run of guest mixes lately here at Low Light Mixes world headquarters. And that streak continues will a wonderful new set from Daniel Hawkins. Here his two previous guest mixes: https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/dark-woods-by-daniel-hawkins/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/metallic-memories/ This mix has a perfect fall vibe. Here's what Daniel says about this collection of trac...

The king of Berlin School EM music, Erwin Broers, is back with a fantastic update to his regular series. This fall update just may the best yet. I listened to this while biking home from work, unsure whether it would fit the activity. Oh man, it was perfect! It kept me pedaling and focused while exposing me to fresh electronic sounds. Here's what Erwin has to say about this set: "Another loo...

I always like to create a mix for autumn but this year I got bust and never got around to it. Thankfully The Lonely Bell has that covered.   The Lonely Bell is Ali Murray who hails from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. He has been producing for ten years and I have been a fan since 2022's "Kingdom of the Deep." The Lonely Bell has a new album out so to celebrate we have this new mix.   Here wh...

More than 8 years ago, Paul Asbury Seaman came to me with an idea for a mix. He would provide the theme and tracklist, and I would man the faders and knobs to create his first guest mix. Of course that first mix was a train-themed set. Now, after 9 railway mixes & many hours traveling on the audio tracks, Paul brings us his tenth train-themed mix. This one is a b it different than the othe...

This mix is pretty straightforward - all ambient, all new. It can be hard to keep up with new releases so I decided to put together a nice collection of new 2025 tracks. Turned out pretty darn good if I do say so. Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00   Aiko Takahashi - Collage On Paper Laid On A Cardboard (Monologue 2025) 02:12   Of Mountains And Seas - Cygnus (Of Mountains And Seas 2025) 05:10...

I really didn't intend to follow an 80s themed mix with another mix with an 80s vibe. But I couldn't help myself because of the brand new album from Crows Labyrinth - Neon Scenes II: Echoes of Then  https://crowslabyrinth.bandcamp.com/album/neon-scenes-ii-echoes-of-then   The album is a follow-up to an album called "Neon Scenes I: Granular Dreams." Both albums are longform generative drone amb...

This mix started via a Spotify playlist with the same name - "You're in an 80s Film Driving at Night." I really liked the synth vibes so I created my own folder at home and began collecting tracks. The mix has a great retro vibe even though many of the tracks are from the last 10 years. But, of course, I had to include some cuts from the time period with songs from Tangerine Dream, John Carpen...

The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight and tomorrow night, August 12th & 13th. I like to use the Perseids as an excuse to create a spacey, ambient mix for stargazing. So here it is. The first track I grabbed for this mix was Jeff Pearce - For The Perseids, from the Gemstones IV compilation. How could I not use that cut in a mix like this. So I decided to look for other tracks with na...

I've been listening to the ECM record label since the 1970s. You can always count on ECM to put out interesting and sometimes great records. My favorite ECM release is Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians." It's not only my favorite ECM album, it's one of my top albums of all-time. A real desert island record for me. A few of my other favorite regular ECM artists are Steve Tibbetts, Eberhard...

I have said many times that I love hosting guest mixes. Whether it's from regular contributors Paul & Erwin or from artists in the ambient space, the mixes expose to new music and artists, and I delight in hearing how someone else approaches the creation of a coherent mix. This new guest mix comes from an ambient artist that I have admired for years - Benoît Pioulard(Tom Meluch). I love hi...
