Transitional Habitats- A new aquarium hobby frontier? 19.04.2021 7:55
The idea of running an aquarium based upon the transition from terrestrial to aquatic is something that we find irresistible. We’ve talked about doing this in the little “urban Igapo” for some time. However, what about trying this in a sort of “one way trip” from terrestrial to aquatic- in a larger aquarium? Intrigued? We are!
It’s about wood. It’s about form. It’s about function. 19.04.2021 13:59
Wood, in particular is an obsession of many hobbyists when assembling their aquascapes. It makes sense. However wouldn’t it make more sense to consider the functional role that wood plays in aquatic habitats in both Nature and aquarium, and considering the way it occurs in the wild, and what attracts fishes to it? Let’s discuss this...
Someplace like...home? 15.04.2021 12:44
The idea of “repatriating” domesticated populations of our tropical fishes to environmental conditions similar to those in which they evolved over eons fascinates me. What secrets can we unlock? What lessons can we learn? What benefits can we gain? It’s a grand experiment- one worth considering, IMHO!
Fun with Filtration! 14.04.2021 17:27
Seriously, can filters be “fun?” Well, not fun in the sense that they’re a blast to put together and maintain; but “fun” in the sense that they can facilitate all sorts of processes which can benefit our tanks. Let’s examine some filter possibilities for the botanical-style aquarium, and push you to do some not-so-wacky experiments on going “filterless!”
No expiration date. 13.04.2021 11:07
Aquariums have no “expiration date”- unless we impose one. Let’s beat the crap out of “old tank syndrome” and the ideas behind it!
Evolving with your aquarium on the long road to success 12.04.2021 11:21
As we’ve talked about numerous times, botanical-style aquariums evolve over time. Sometimes-often, actually-the way they start out is far different from how they’ll look weeks-or months later. They evolve. And how we come to accept and understand this requires us to evolve, too- with our aquariums.
My Mangrove Obsession. Could it be YOURS, too? 12.04.2021 12:07
There is something alluring, amazing and altogether incredible about mangroves. They’re much easier to sprout and grow than you might think, and they can be the real highlight of your botanical-style brackish water aquarium!!!
Hell? Or High water? Questions and answers about the “Urban Igapo” concept... 10.04.2021 8:45
Today, we open up the email and answer a few reader/listener questions on the “Urban Igapo!”
The contrarian embrace of decomposing “stuff” in our aquariums... 10.04.2021 8:59
Yeah, stuff breaks down in our tanks.. and if we don’t engage in a mad scramble to remove it, amazing benefits accrue...
Blowing up the Barbs! The hobby’s most under appreciated fishes? 07.04.2021 16:28
Yeah, time for another plea for you to keep the hobby’s most underrated, under-appreciated fishes- The Barbs!
The philosophy of transience.. 01.04.2021 8:21
Accepting the inevitable change which occurs to our carefully planned and executed aquariums over time requires us to think more deeply... to contemplate... to embrace the ephemeral and the ever changing...the very essence of the much-discussed philosophy of wabi-sabi. The “philosophy of transience...”
The Joys of Randomness 01.04.2021 7:04
It’s amazing to see those little random areas in our tanks where “stuff” accumulates. The forces which affect the distribution of botanical materials in our aquariums are worth considering- and valuing- for the randomness they bring.
“R” is For Risk 01.04.2021 4:58
Sometimes, we have to take a chance with our aquarium work. It’s scary, but it’s how we move forward.. it involves risk. Are you up for it?
Absolutely...Not? 30.03.2021 11:50
With all of the cool stuff going on in the hobby, we sometimes have to push further- to try new things or ideas. Sometimes it means forgoing the criticism, the attacks- the “regurgitation” of outmoded generalizations- when Pershing our vision. It takes courage.
The Bloom 30.03.2021 6:52
An exciting time in the life of our botanical-filled aquariums is when those first biofilms make their appearance. We call this time “The Bloom”- and it’s time for celebration!
Natural processes and the mental shifts we need to make! 26.03.2021 11:16
Yeah, it’s time once again to discuss the idea of making mental shifts. We as hobbyists need to do things a bit differently; we need to understand how what we do is as impactful on Nature as She is on us...
Keeping it together- the beauty of “buttress roots” and their function in the flooded forests... 25.03.2021 9:03
Buttress roots are large, dynamic features which serve to protect trees in the flooded forests we love so much. Let’s look at them a bit more closely, and consider how they can work in our aquariums as well!
It’s kind of my fault. The power of words- and the need to THINK more! 23.03.2021 25:43
Botanical “style” aquariums.. I maybe shouldn’t have selected the word “style” to describe this methodology. Words have multiple meanings, consequences, and interpretations. We in the hobby need to be a bit more careful with the words we use, how we use them- and the assumptions that arise.
My fave fish for botanical-style tanks- part I of like, many!! 20.03.2021 26:10
Yeah, it’s about time I dove into this topic. Here are my first few faves. I hope this doesn’t become another one of those morning “top 10” things. Nah, it won’t be- trust me!
New Start. New Approach. 19.03.2021 6:38
Let’s try something a little different with our next aquarium.. a sort of “one way” version of our “Urban Igapo” concept.. huh? Interested, confused...or both? Check it out!
Getting to the bottom of the “sedimented substrate thing!” 18.03.2021 9:54
Yeah, we’re obsessed with substrates. You kinda knew that. And our “NatureBase” substrates are becoming pretty popular! And of course, there are a lot of questions about what makes these sedimented substrates tick! Let’s hit on a few!
The BIG arguement for smaller aquariums! 15.03.2021 13:23
Bigger is NOT always “better” in the aquarium hobby. In fact, it’s often worse. Let’s look at the pros and cons of “modest sized” aquariums!
From the depths of our imaginations to the shallows of streams. 15.03.2021 9:08
Little, shallow, often ephemeral aquatic habitats are compelling, fascinating, and enjoyable to replicate in both form and function in our aquariums! Yeah, we should be doing more of this...
The surprising benefits of being flexible... 15.03.2021 9:39
In the aquarium hobby, we need to compromise, accommodate- to be flexible. And that’s not always a bad thing. In Nature, fishes need to be flexible to adapt to a changing environment.. we should, too. Because when we’re open to being flexible, all kinds of good stuff can happen!
Piling up. 11.03.2021 6:56
The idea of keeping substrate intact as we “remodel” our tanks shouldn’t be seen as “weird.” When you view the substrate as a living, breathing entity, it makes a ton of sense you preserve it and continue with it, right?
