This is the last week of our Onward series which is a brief journey through 3 of The Psalms of Ascent. For thousands of years, these psalms have been sung, recited, wept through, and exclaimed by Jewish pilgrims as they ascended the hills traveling to Jerusalem. Even though we too are pilgrims awaiting Christ’s return, we culturally struggle to accept the slowness of direction, long obedience, and...

For thousands of years, Jewish pilgrims have cherished, sung, and recited these Psalms as they made their way up the hills en route to Jerusalem. As modern-day pilgrims eagerly awaiting the return of Christ, we too, grapple with the challenges of ou...

We have so much hope and freedom in Christ’s completed work, but we too are pilgrims who live east of Eden, this side of heaven awaiting Christ’s return. We experience the same perpetual rollercoaster of life as the Jewish pilgrims did, but sadly our tolerance for slowness of direction, long obedience, and patient persistence isn’t very high. We empathize with their emotions but need also to accep...

Challenge: Pray ACTS If you are a follower of Jesus, start the conversation…we begin to see several things happen as we beg God to activate our armor: We pray TRUTH grounded in his word. We tell God who He is based on what the word of God says that He is. We ask God to remind us of ________ piece of armor so it will be activated. We rely on the Spirit to work rather than anxiously attempting to do...

We are in the middle of our series on the Armor of God. So often when we talk about the armor of God we get a ra-ra speech boiling down to “fight” “try harder” “do better” “be better”. That’s not the intention of this armor. We see that we take a passive stance to be strengthened by an incredibly active and endless power source to put on the “full armor,” which is just Paul’s fancy way of saying,...

Doctrine is the teaching about WHO God is and WHAT He requires of us. “[Satan’s] aim is to frustrate God’s plan of salvation at the outset by enticing Jesus…His proposal…and His quotations from scripture…involve things that are normally considered good. Yet under both is hidden the devil’s poison.” -Tokunboh Adeyemo Righteousness' 2 truths: -Assurance - You didn’t earn it, so rest in it because yo...

Take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. We focus not on the evil schemes or on the enemy, but on God’s power. “We are called to wear the armor of God because that is what Jesus has already done.” “Standing our ground simply means clinging desperately to Jesus Christ as our only hope for salvation.”

The culmination of the absurdity, impossibility, and upside-down-ness of Paul’s ministry, the whole essence of Jesus Christ our Lord (incarnation, life, death, burial, and resurrection), and the group dynamics of the church proclaims only on thing and until this letter it was mystery… What is a biblical mystery - A never before revealed universal truth given through revelation to a prophet and/or...

This works-based success isn’t just an American value, but it is something that permeated the early church especially in relation to salvation. Last week we discussed the immeasurable benefits we possess. The benefits those who follow Jesus have freely received based on no work of their own. We are totally passive, God is always the active agent. We are chosen, holy, blameless, adopted, paid in full, wise, and sealed! But Paul isn’t blind to how the Christian faith journey works. He knows exactly what these followers of Jesus are up again...

As Christianity spread throughout the middle eastern region of the world, Paul sent a letter to every gathering of followers of Jesus, believing former Jews and believing Gentiles, men & women, slaves and free men, in an effort to fortify and establish them individually and collectively as followers of Jesus. Many of these people could have heard first hand accounts of Jesus's ministry and His...
