Capitol Ministries Weekly Bible Study

The Scriptures are replete with verses that emphasize how the believer must be characterized first and foremost by love. Love is essential and preeminent! A close second to love is the believer’s lifetime pursuit of knowledge. In fact, Proverbs calls those who are lacking in knowledge  simpletons , whereas those who have knowledge are called wise .  A public servant can be neither unloving nor a s...

In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount He states,  “You are the salt of the earth; … You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13–14). Often, well-meaning believers invoke this passage as a means of encouragement and prodding others to step up to the plate and affect the world.  In this study, I desire to provide you with a greater understanding of the Greek verb that Jesus uses. “You are” is not an impe...

A public servant can learn much about debating skills from this week’s Bible passage. As I strive to serve you and make the Scriptures practical and applicable, I am constantly praying and thinking about your life in elected office and what is most pertinent in the passage relative to that, being careful to not sacrifice authorial intent.  This week I cannot help but observe how the desperation of...

In the proclamation of the Word of God, lives and nations are changed! How should we respond to those who reject the veracity of Scripture?

If good churches will not cast a vision for mentoring, discipling and maturing individuals in Christ for (among other things) the purpose of leading in public office, then who will ?

Corruption in office is a serious matter that results in severe consequences, not only for officeholders and their associates, but also for political parties and even for nations. Since this dishonesty is so costly a matter in government, what can we do proactively to prevent it? Since corruption does not happen overnight, what lies specifically at its headwaters? The Old Testament (OT) psalmist s...

A believer’s greatest persecution often comes from people who identify themselves as believers. Why is that?

You are leading the United States at a time when the world is filled with violence, aggression, and conflict, and some nations are even attacking their own innocent civilians. As you make decisions about when to engage in conflict or war, learning what Scripture has to say about the principles of war is critically important.

Given Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and recent attacks on Israel by Hamas, Syria, and Lebanon and the world’s growing response, let us investigate more fully what the Scriptures have to say about war.

How to choose a biblically-based spiritual coach for life...

In this study let us attempt to get a better grip and understanding of the Old Testament (OT) book of Proverbs. We will gain an understanding of the various kinds of formal structures that God has incorporated in this book; such insights will greatly aid our comprehension. God penned this book through His servant Solomon, the wisest man of his day (cf. 1 Kings 3:28) and of all time (1 Kings 3:12)....

The legitimacy of the Christian faith rests on the finished work of Christ on our behalf. His conquest over sin is authenticated by His rising from the dead; therefore, the resurrection is the crux of Christianity. In contrast to other major religions of the world—all of which are works-based, soteriological systems—it follows that without the resurrection an individual remains in his or her sin,...

Let us discover what Scripture says to the government regarding taxing the free market. More specifically, what are the five guiding scriptural principles that public servants must consider relative to tax policy formation? To do so is to either prosper or else damage a nation.

If the trajectory of our country is going to change, it must begin with our hearts. America’s systemic problem is spiritual in nature; therefore, we must  first steward our own hearts and the hearts of our families before speaking about changing the direction of our country; anything less is hypocritical. May God use the following thoughts to aid in crafting a special, constructive day centered in...

Every culture and government throughout history has faced the issue of racism and unjust resentment toward others who are different. Racism is characteristic and evident of the sinful nature of man. Fallen mankind has always built barriers and ostracized others. This exclusion stems from pride: a fallen man’s predilection to believe he or she is superior to another in some way. In this regard, rac...

This week I would like to investigate what God says about spanking a child. We will study what the book of Proverbs, as well as the whole of Scripture, teaches about this increasingly controversial subject. It is important for public servants to know the mind of God on this matter, lest they legislate from naïveté, void of God’s wisdom in this regard. Given the depraved nature of man, for the inst...

Nearly every public servant who has his or her ear to the ground knows that the Bible enjoins individuals and nations to bless Israel. In Genesis 12:3 God states in His promise to Abraham (Israel’s patriarch), “I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse.…” Not all, however, who follow Christ are pro-Israel. Within Evangelicalism there is a camp who hold to what I exp...
