Yesterday I was a bit sulky and pouty that my garden hasn’t been maturing and I am not in food “preservation season,” like I usually am this time of year. Last night I stepped out my back door to head to the garden to see if any tomatoes had started showing any signs of turning green to pink and there it was. It hit me.

I guess since my tomatoes are not turning, I can’t really say I am in “tomato season.” It’s about to be peach season in my kitchen, as I soon have 4 lugs coming. But for today, it just doesn’t seem right to sit her idle and not be laser focused on a “season” of life! So I guess, I am in the middle of fly season.

Now that we are full on into back to school mode, I thought it was time to talk about a subject that was near and dear to my heart because my dearest babies are involved. It is time to slow down and observe that this time of year means you are now sharing the road with school buses and that is a heavy responsibility that requires your full attention!

So, we have a birthday on the Jones Ranch today. Today is the day we celebrate our lead rancher, our girl dad, our fixer, our horse saddler, our main hay man, our cattle guy, all the things, you get it.

In case the long lines of trailers at the local auction markets haven’t tipped you off, our nation’s cowherd is shrinking at a quick pace.

I love having our kids at home. They love being home soaking up sunshine from sun up to sun down. Playing in garden dirt. Covered in dog, cattle, goat, or horse hair. Wild and free. Maybe a bit feral. Am I alone? You are probably rolling your eyes and calling me crazy. I just love having all my chicks in the nest.

We are still living with inflation. Energy prices may be down a little, but still very high. The food that we love costs much more. Ground beef surged up 11% from last year. The cost of bacon jumped 9.3%. Chicken breast is up almost 24%. From the farm and ranch perspective our prices needed to go up. Our costs for raising the crops that feed our animals continue to hit new peaks.
