Hope the world offers seems offered as wishful thinking. Politicians say they offer hope, about what? Hope that things will get better? How will they deliver on this hope? By putting another sinner in office to do combat with other sinners who disagree with him for the next four years? People say generally about things or future events, “I hope that happens.” But then the route to make that happen...

Some of the Israelites put CHRIST to the test, Paul tells us, and were destroyed by serpents. Paul sees close relation from the wanderings in the desert to our lives in Christ. When God sends fiery serpents to you, it’s not “God, how could you?!” Rather, it’s “God what are you wanting to prune in me?” Right? “What are you trying to yield in me??”

God wants Paul in Jerusalem. And if Paul is in Jerusalem, than an ambassador of Christ is in Jerusalem. And if an Ambassador of Christ is in Jerusalem, then Christ is in Jerusalem. And so then I ask, what is Christ doing in Jerusalem, again? Who is Christ, and what is Christ about now that His body, through Paul, is here?

I’ve felt the tension that these elders feel. I know, “This person is here today, and they’re not going to like that person who I know will stand up and say such and so.” Or “Oh great, that person’s here today, and my sermon isn’t going to settle well with them,” and though Paul IS going to go to great lengths here to try - and fail we might add - nevertheless try to keep the peace, I wonder if so...

At first look at this passage, I thought, “Gee, is David just throwing sugar on Saul and Jonathan? Is he just white-washing?” and the prospect of that didn’t make for a very good message. Trusting the Scriptures are more than just reflections of men’s best-attempts at funerals, I knew there had to be more, and there is more. The Lord makes everything new!

It is likely that the Amalekite knows that David is the next in line for the throne. While the Philistines are no doubt about to settle into Israel, David is the man who took down Goliath. David is the man who has defended Israel from invaders even while Saul was still king, and Saul hated David! Saul feared David! David was in the presence of what we know to be a tyrant, a selfish, murderous leader, a killer, a hostile enemy to the priests of God. I mean this doesn’t just get David in a self-serving sense, “I’ll-get-to-be-king,” but it can get to David in a wanting-justice sense. How far are you willing to go to keep your sin? It’s a saddening thought, but how long will you hold on to it? Who has to face the consequences of your choices? Who needs to hurt? What do you need face? What things need to be said? Saul's sin is coming full force it seems, as he's willing to annihilate an entire city of the Lord's priests. And David is audacious enough to take the blame for it!

There is something missing in this entire passage. David’s fled, or trying to flee the Presence of Saul, but where is he to go? What’s he supposed to do? All the author does right now is show us what he’s doing. But something is missing.
