Not just that – We’ll watch, review, discuss, debate, rate and praise and/or poke holes in every episode of Doctor Who, starting with the 1963 pilot. That’s right; we’re beginning with William Hartnell and then working our way forward through time, episode by episode and Doctor by Doctor. In parallel, we’re also reviewing New Who, starting with Eccleston in the 2005 revival. At the time of writing this, we’re already well into the Tom Baker and Peter Capaldi eras! From comparing Dalek and Cybermen...

N021 The Idiot’s Lantern 19.05.2015

A large hat is about to be placed on a little lady while the rest of us are being turned into faceless drones. * * * The Tenth Doctor and Rose attempt to go to New York in 1955, but – wouldn't you know it – end up in London instead, and 2 years ahead of time at that! The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II is but a day away and people are geared up to watch it on the telly. Alas, an evil energy-based...

C029 The Tenth Planet 08.05.2015

The Doctor and his two companions, Ben and Polly, materialise in the distant future of 1986, in what the Doc dubbed "the coldest place in the world" in C028 The Smugglers. We learn, perhaps somewhat disappointingly, that they've not arrived on Hoth but in the Antarctic, coincidentally right atop a subterranean military-controlled, UN-regulated space-base, which is governed by the faux-American Gen...

N020 The Age of Steel 18.04.2015

The Doc euthanises a young bride-to-be, tortures millions of people to death, and then Mickey and Jake go to France. * * * The Tenth Doctor, Rose and Mickey (aka Ricky) escape with Parallel-Universe Pete Tyler, Ricky (aka Mickey) and the rest of the resistance through an astounding deus ex machina, and now the battle for, erm, "Earth" really kicks off. Watch as they infiltrate Battersea Power Stat...

N019 Rise of the Cybermen 12.04.2015

#DoctorWho #DrWho #Podcast #WhoBackWhen #NewWho #Nerds #Geeks #Whovians #SciFi #Cybermen A crazy billionaire creates the Cybermen in a bizarro London, and alternate-universe-Mickey (aka Ricky) is really angry. * * * When the TARDIS suddenly malfunctions, the Tenth Doctor, Rose and Mickey crash into a parallel universe. All of a sudden they find that they've materialised in an alternate version of...

C028 The Smugglers 26.03.2015

The tale one solitary woman in drag, stuck at an ultra-violent, 17th-century sausage fest while pirates look for hidden booty. * * * The Doctor and his (almost) brand new companions, Polly and Ben, materialise in 17th century Cornwall, where there be pirate mischief afoot! For no reason whatsoever, a local churchwarden shares a secret clue with the Doctor, and then shortly thereafter Doc is kidnap...

N018 The Girl in the Fireplace 12.03.2015

The Doctor and Rose take Mickey on his first trip through space and time to a 51st-century spaceship, where Mickey promptly pulls Rose off-screen, so that Doc can go have his own adventure. After encountering an 18th century fireplace aboard the ship, and finding that it's only one of several portals to different periods in the life of one Reinette Poisson (actually Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, also...

BONUS: Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. 16.02.2015

Doctor Who now has a hot niece, Ian's been replaced by Bernard Cribbins and there's plenty more Cushing for the pushing! * * * Peter Cushing is back as Doctor Who – yes, that's his name – in another silver-screen remake of a classic William Hartnell story. This time, (C010) Dalek Invasion of Earth gets the Technicolor slapstick treatment, and not only has this movie dispensed with prepositions, bu...

BONUS: Springtime for 347 01.02.2015

Bonus-Thanks to our iTunes Reviewers #2 * * * Kablammo! It's time for another (fake) Doctor Who Audiobook Adventure Trailer! And I know it's only the second one of these so far, but as fun little side-projects go, I think we're getting better at them! *ahem* Heads up, Big Finish, next time you're doing auditions… ;) Anyway, back on track. So many of of you have taken the time to share your impress...

C027 The War Machines 30.01.2015

A maniacal, telepathic computer dispatches clunky Dalek-wannabees to enslave mankind. Why? Because shut up, that's why. * * * The 1st Doctor and Dodo (aka you-know-what) materialise in modern-day London of 1966, because apparently that's an option. Hartnell's Doctor must have just lied to Barbara and Ian during their entire run. Anyway, it's the height of the Swinging 60s; times are changing; peop...

N017 School Reunion 20.01.2015

A glorious reunion with three Smiths, two tin dogs, and genetically modified gargoyles who are allergic to their own oil. * * * The 10th Doctor and Rose are undercover in Deffry Vale High School after Mickey, aka Ricky, has (not booty-)called Rose to say that there's something pretty alien going on. And he's not wrong. The Krillitane Brother Lassar, portrayed by Anthony Stewart Head (Giles in Buff...

N016 Tooth and Claw 11.01.2015

Scottish Kung-Fu monks, Queen Victoria, and a werewolf that isn’t a werewolf. Ok, then. * * * The 9th Doctor and Rose continue their burgeoning love affair by accidentally going to Scotland and bumping into Queen Victoria and being welcomed into her entourage. Together, they head to *dum-dum-dum* Torchwood House. That’s right, this is partly the origin story of the Doctor Who spinoff. It turns out...

C026 The Savages 31.12.2014

An allegory about equality acted out by evil guys in blackface and fairly sophisticated cavemen. Also, The Doctor has a vibrator. No lie. * * * The 1st Doctor, Steven and Dodo materialise on a planet where two different races/people/societies (we're never told which it is) are at war. Sort of. One of the factions – let's just call them that – is based in one single cave and consists of raggedy cav...

BONUS: Last Christmas – The 2014 Christmas Special 29.12.2014

Capaldi's first Xmas Special, and it's Alien meets The Thing meets Inception meets Santa... Mind-bending and awesome! * * * Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor has just celebrated his very first Christmas with us, and it was a mind-bending, Inception-esque tale that kept us thinking and debating long after it finished. Here is the result. And as another little Christmas miracle, this episode (of Who Back...

The Who Back When Team PS: Christmas, erm, E...

N015 New Earth 07.12.2014

Doc and Rose see a familiar face each, and then square off against cat-nun-nurses and a horde of gross zombies * * * When the 10th Doctor receives an odd message literally appearing in text across his psychic paper, there's no time to make a big deal out of this obviously awesome phenomenon, and instead he and Rose head to the planet of New Earth, the city of New New York, and the year 5,000,000,0...

A016 The Beast of Orlok 07.12.2014

It's Frankenstein meets The Wolfman meets H.C. Andersen meets Jewish folklore meets aliens, set in Germany. Ok... * * * The 8th Doctor and Lucy fail to go to Alton Towers and instead end up in the Black Forest, just as the infamous Baron Teufel (german for devil) and ducal emissary Lügner (german for liar) have been attacked, and the latter killed, by the legendary Beast of Orlok. Coincidentally,...

BONUS: The Bees, The Bees, Oh No, Not The Bees! 01.12.2014

We really want to thank all of you who have taken the time to share your thoughts about Who Back When on iTunes. * * * It's Bonus Episode time! That's right; the wait is over! No more stalling on our part....

N014 The Christmas Invasion 19.11.2014

Tennant's first proper episode as The Doctor, in which he sleeps a lot, Rose is inconsistent and aliens rock! * * * Although Tennant had already appeared as the 10th Doctor at the end of (N013) The Parting of the Ways, as well as the 2005 Children In Need Special, aka Doctor Who: Born Again, this was his first proper go. And he's asleep for most of it. Something's gone wrong with his regeneration...

C025 The Gunfighters 09.11.2014

Two Docs get mixed-up; Steven and Dodo are master pianists; and the whole thing is tied together with the most annoying song in the Wild West. * * * Instead of going to the planet Dentos in the constellation Zero-Cavities, Doc takes his two companions and the tooth he chipped at the end of (C024) 'The Celestial Toymaker' to the Wild West, Tombstone in the year 1881 to be precise, where threats, bo...

BONUS: The 9th Doctor Retrospective 26.10.2014

After reviewing Eccleston's run as the 9th Doctor, we sat down to discuss the highlights and low-points of Series 1 of the Doctor Who revival. * * * We recently launched our reviews of Bad Wolf and The Parting of the Ways into the ether, signifying our arrival at the end of the 9th Doctor's run and the arrival of Tennant as the 10th Doctor. Over the course of 13 episodes, we got to know Eccleston'...

N013 The Parting of the Ways 20.10.2014

Rose is her own Deus Ex Machina, Jackie cashes in a dodgy favour, And we bid farewell to the 9th Doctor. * * * In this continuation of N012 Bad Wolf, first series finale of the Doctor Who revival, and Last Hoorah of Eccleston as the 9th Doctor, The Doc and Captain Jack arrive aboard the Dalek spaceship only to meet the monster behind the monsters, the Dalek Emperor himself. Unfortunately, said emp...

N012 Bad Wolf 13.10.2014

The Doc escapes from the Big Brother House, Rose knows basic arithmetics, and Captain Jack has an ass-gun. * * * Suddenly and without warning, The 9th Doctor materialises inside the Big Brother house; Rose appears on the set of The Weakest Link; and Captain Jack Harkness wakes up as the latest person to receive his 15 minutes of fame on What Not To Wear... in the future. And in the future, reality...

C024 The Celestial Toymaker 05.10.2014

The Doctor is turned invisible, inaudible and intangible, and Steve and Dodo clown around in this both childish and completely racist serial. * * * As The Doctor, Steven and Dodo arrive... somewhere... Doc has been turned invisible and intangible. Then, shortly thereafter, he's all fine again. It turns out they've been kidnapped by the Celestial Toymaker, one of the Guardians of Time (we don't fin...

N011 Boom Town 28.09.2014

The Doctor has dinner with the enemy, Mickey wants to cheat on his girlfriend, and no one seems to object to Cardiff Castle being demolished. * * * The Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack Harkness materialise in Cardiff right atop the rift, that appears to have changed location since N003 The Unquiet Dead. There, they meet up with Mickey (aka Ricky) and all seems fine. They've gone to the rift to rechar...

C023 The Ark 27.09.2014

Dodo dooms mankind with a sneeze; cyclopses lock humans in a security kitchen; and incorporeal creatures sit down in chairs. * * * The Doctor, Steven and Dodo visit an Ark in space (not that one), where most of mankind has been miniaturised and put on shelves in cold storage. The few regular-sized humans around are aided by a race of cyclopses, called the Monoids, who may or may not be their slave...
