Two brothers. John Kirby Allen, and Augustus Chapman Allen bought land along Buffalo Bayou and named it Houston.

After Daisy, Texas was surveyed and established southwest of Houston in the late 1800s, it was learned there was already a Daisy Texas in Rains Coiunty, east of Dallas. So they named the town after their Post Master, Alief Ozelda MaGee… they renamed it Alief.

Atascocita Road is thought to be the oldest road in the Houston area.

Galveston Island took a direct hit from a category 4 hurricane in September of 1900. Thousands were killed and the island city was devastated. A lot of work went into the island after that, including building a seawall, and even raisng the island anywhere from 3 to 17 feet in places.

When I was hospitalized because of a serious bacterial infection, it gave me a lot of time to talk to God. I realized God’s way is always the best way, even if I didn’t like it.

During a storm one night when my granddaughter was staying with us, she shared with me, that she talks to Jesus every night. If only we all realized how important it is to have that kind of a relationship with Christ.

The name Texas came from the Native American word “Tejas” or Tay-shas.” It came from the Caddo Indians, and it means Friends or Allies.

Amarillo, Texas was settled twice. Once in 1887 by J.T. Berry, and then again in 1893 by Henry B. Sanborn. Because the first location was in a mudhole, the towns people opted for the second location East of the original location.

During a dispute of the towns people, tempers flared, and the confrontation got very heated. That led to a young boy, and a school trustee making comments, that somehow named the town.

A Texas ghost town was purchased some time ago by German immigrants, but they are much older now, and not able to physically do the upkeep and care of the property. So they put it up for sale. The entire town.

The Daily News was first published in 1842, when Texas was still a Republic, and Sam Houston was President. It is still published today in Galveston.

A young Tejano superstar from Lake Jackson, Texas rises to fame but was killed by her own fan club president in 1995.

The McGee Bend Reservoir was renamed Lake Sam Rayburn in honor of the late Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn in 1963.

The Texas Revolution had been a hard fought fight from the beginning. But on April 21, 1836 General Sam Houston and the Texian Army defeated General Santa Ana and his Mexican Army in a battle that lasted just 18 minutes. Texas won its independence.

In 1836 three leaders, Michel B. Menard, Samuel May Williams, and Thomas F. McKinney purchased a league of land and labor of land onj Galveston Island. TGhey went right to work to establish Galveston as the largest city in the Republic of Texas. Quote- “Michel Menard was also a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence ansd member of the Congress of the Republic of Texas.”

As a minor league club for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Houston Buffalos played at Buff Stadium.

More than 120 years ago the Bluebonnets became the official state flower of Texas. 3 decades later a beautification program was put into place scattering bluebonnet seeds all up and down Texas highways.

Sam Houston being named Commander in Chief of the Republic’s military forces evacuated along with delegates and settlers from Washington on the Brazos, making their way to Galveston or Louisiana, as Santa Ana’s Army marched closer.

With business of life, hurry up and go here, hurry up and go there, God reminds us that he created the Sabbath. A day of rest and worship.

Later this year the State of Texas will open a new State Park. Palo Pinto State Park located halfway between Ft. Worth and Abilene, near the small town of Strawn, Texas.
