Verhalen uit Museum Plantin-Moretus

Martina est une petite fille lorsque ses parents s’établissent à Anvers. A dix-sept ans, elle tient la boutique de dentelle. Elle confie ses pensées à son journal intime.

1876. La ‘Officina Plantiniana’, la maison d’éditions de Christophe Plantin est mise en vente après 300 ans d’activité. Edward Moretus a rendez-vous avec un fonctionnaire communal pour régler les modalités de la vente.

In 1876, the ‘Officina Plantiniana’, the publishing house of Christoffel Plantin was sold after 300 years of activity. Edward Moretus made an appointment with a city official to arrange the sale.

Christoffel Plantin built his printing business into a successful enterprise. Nine generations of business leaders, immortalized in paint, hang together in this portrait gallery.

As a young girl, Martina moved to Antwerp with her parents. At seventeen years old, she was running the business side of the company. She confided her thoughts and feelings in her diary.

As a french speaker, a good Dutch dictionary was necessary for Plantin. Christoffel Plantin discusses his concerns with his proof reader Kiliaan. He made it his life’s work.

In the bookshop, books, maps and atlases are available over the counter. Some books are banned and will be placed on the ‘index’.

After the text had been printed, a proof reading followed. The professor read the text, the proof reader read the text afterwards and made improvements where necessary. Concentration is required and distraction is out of the question.

During turbulant times Plantin printed a Catholic card and wrote a letter to the Spanish King Filip II. The Spanish scretary recieved the letter and informed the King.

Plantin was the publisher favoured by scientists and humanists. Similarly by Joost Lips, the humanist writer who often stayed with Plantin, and is better known as Justus Lipsius.

Plantin had 90 different typefaces, including trendy typefaces from France from the french designers Granjon en Garamond. One of these typesetters is here to present the room to you.

In the print room work both the font setters and the printers. If there were ever tensions between the staff, they could make a complaint. These complaints were all neatly recorded.

Balthasar I and the later generations of Moretus collected books. Thus arose the library, which also served for some time as a private chapel. But this space was, and is, primarily for books.

The printers workshop has exclusive typefaces and typeface-punches to match. At first the typefaces were outsourced. However, from 1622 there was a master type caster at work.

Balthasar I Moretus, the grandson of Christoffel Plantin, made the house a palace. On July 8th 1641, he took his last breath.

Maria Theresa Borrekens took leadership of the business after the death of her husband François-Jean Moretus. The luxury that can be seen in this lounge was to mask the pain of a mother.

Plantin looks back on his life. He is grateful and proud: of his wife, his daughters, his publications and of Antwerp.

Na Plantijns overlijden op 1 juli 1589 schreef Jan Moretus brieven met het nieuws van Plantijns dood aan verschillende mensen. Op 27 juni 1570 was Plantijn op 10 juni 1570 benoemd tot koninklijk aartsdrukker of “prototypographus”. Wanneer de hertog van Alva te weten wilde komen wie een bepaald werk had gedrukt, was het dus ook te verwachten dat hij zich wendde tot de koninklijke aartsdrukker. brieven van Plantijn aan de hertog van Alva, mei 1571 (ingelezen door Marjorie Israel)

Plantijn slaagde er in om in een politiek zeer woelig en gevaarlijk klimaat stand te houden. Hij laat weten dat hij tegen zijn zin pamfletten moet drukken tégen de Spaanse Koning. Door dat te laten weten aan Spanje maar ook door het feit dat hij zijn eigen logo op de pamfletten gebruikt, bedient hij in feite zowel de Spaanse koning als de nieuwe machthebbers. Je zou denken dat Plantijn ruimte genoeg heeft voor het onderbrengen van enkele soldaten als dat wordt verplicht. Hij vraag (en krijgt) toch een vrijstelling om dat te doen. Maar hij vraagt het niet enkel voor zichzelf. Ook zijn schoonzonen wil hij besparen van de verplichting om soldaten te huisvesten. De wensen van een auteur lopen niet altijd samen met de intenties van een uitgever. Voor een auteur is het van belang dat zijn werk op de best mogelijk manier wordt uitgegeven, terwijl de uitgever een succesvolle verkoop voor ogen heeft. Met het herstel van het Spaanse gezag in Antwerpen na de capitulatie in 1585 werd ook alles in het werk gesteld om de katholieke godsdienst zoveel mogelijk in ere te herstellen.
