Up & Under
Up & Under
Three friends bonded by their love of sports and sports journalism discuss the goings on in the NBA landscape. Conor, Francis and Grant were roommates at a college in Memphis, TN, where their extensive sports debates first formed into a podcast. Now living on opposite coasts, sports is the only thing keeping them from fading out of each others lives. Long distance usually works, right?

Episode 36: NBA Panic Meter with Edgar Acevedo 18.01.2022 1:27:02
Welcome back to the Up & Under, where the ups are upper and the unders are underer. This week, Francis and Grant are joined by Off The Ball Network's Edgar Acevedo to discuss his Knicks' big name acquisition (2:17) and rate the seasons disappointing teams on the Panic Meter, featuring the Hawks (11:51), Celtics (25:19), Nets (36:40), and Lakers (47:39). Then, finally alone, Frank and Grant pan...
BONUS: The Artist's Journey 15.12.2021 5:44
The flames sawed in the wind and the embers paled and deepened and paled and deepened like the bloodbeat of some living thing eviscerate upon the ground before them and they watched the fire which does contain within it something of men themselves inasmuch as they are less without it and are divided from their origins and are exiles. For each fire is all fires, and the first fire and the last ever...
Episode 35: We're Running Out of Topics 15.12.2021 1:02:17
Here at the Up & Under, we always give our listeners what they want. And what our listeners want, whether they know it or not, is eleven minutes of unbridled commentary on an early December Pacers-Knicks game. This week after Frank reads his book report for the class (3:51), the guys break down the Grizzlies' incredible mini run and what it means for Ja Morant and the team's future (14:58), di...
Episode 34: All the Takes We Shouldn't Make 14.11.2021 1:02:16
Okay, so now that we finally are through our offseason predictions, let's break down why all of them were wrong instantly. This week, Conor and Grant are reunited and you bet your ass that "midichlorians" is said in the first two minutes. With no Francis to hold them back, the guys gleefully list their worst and best offseason takes 12 games into the season (7:57), discuss the effect of the NBA's...
Episode 33: NBA's Most Interesting Teams, Part 3 13.11.2021 2:06:47
Anndddddd we've finally made it through our 2021 Most Interesting Teams series. Luckily, we worked out a deal with the NBA that the first 10 games of the season won't count this year, so this does in fact qualify as a preseason series. Please stop sending letters to our parents' houses telling them we're not punctual. It hurts. Part 3 is another split episode: in the first segment, Francis and Gra...
Episode 32: NBA's Most Interesting Teams, Part 2 22.10.2021 1:45:36
And it's here again everybody! The NBA is back after another shortened offseason and clearly we could have used the extra time because we are only two-thirds through our preview episodes. Today we've got a two-parter for your listening pleasure, so if you can, understandably, only take Conor in small doses, this is the episode for you. In the first half, Francis and Grant get rambling drunk and sp...
Episode 31: NBA's Most Interesting Teams, Part 1 21.09.2021 1:06:06
Welcome back to the Up & Under for season 3! They say season 3 is typically a series' peak, but boy, I don't know how in the world we're going to top that absolute heat we brought each and every episode of the first two seasons. I guess the only thing to do is go bigger and better. For the first episode of season 3, we rekindle our Most Interesting Teams series from last year with a brand new...
Episode 30: Finals and Draft and Trades, Oh My! 02.08.2021 1:16:33
The Up & Under has officially turned the big 3-0. This will now be a podcast exclusively about yard sales and early-onset arthritis. This week, Conor and Grant are joined by special guest Francis to discuss their takeaways from the Finals (7:15), all things NBA Draft (26:49) including Conor's take on Santi Aldama (36:57) and the best and worst drafts (1:04:03), and what to make of the Lakers' trad...
Episode 29: The Biggest Big Three in the NBA Finals 11.07.2021 1:07:46
Welcome to yet another episode of the Up & Under, man they keep churning these things out don't they? Conor and Grant are mercifully not alone this week, that was unbearable. They are thrilled to be joined by repeat guest Will McIntyre in Francis' stead. Topics include: initial thoughts on the Finals with the Suns holding a 2-0 lead (4:47); is someone other than Chris Paul the Suns most important...
Episode 28: Second Round Recap and a Wild Week in the League 20.06.2021 55:33
Look, we're only one little podcast. How are we supposed to talk about all these topics, especially down a man? We're working off a shortened offseason too and don't get paid nearly enough to qualify for load management. We, the media, are the victims here. Conor and Grant learn to spread their wings this week sans Frank, and do their best to cover the wide-ranging storylines from the past week. T...
Episode 27: First Round Roundup 06.06.2021 1:33:03
What...is...good everybody it's your boy Franklin Carvana, welcome to another episode of the Up & Under. This week, Conor and Grant return to save the pod and the boys talk all things playoffs, including but very much not limited to: Rajon Rondo, Luka-stopper (6:20); the Los Angeles Kendall Jenner's Boyfriends (25:10); the Jazz upsetting the Grizz (50:32); the second round Finals between the B...
Episode 26: NBA Awards and Early Playoff Predictions 23.05.2021 1:47:34
Welcome back to the Up and Under! In this very special episode, Francis is outnumbered. We listened to what the people wanted and brought back friends of the pod Mac Trammell and Danny Galvin at the same damn time. You get a much deserved reprieve from, as Francis put it, "Conor and Grant's bullshit." On this episode the guys cover a lot of ground, including the play-in games (3:12), NBA awards (...
Episode 25: The 2nd Annual All-NBA Extravaganza 10.05.2021 1:31:52
Welcome to the quarter mark of the first 100 episodes of the Up & Under, a milestone that I'm sure we all had marked down on our calendars. Speaking of milestones, today's episode is the first ever 2nd annual segment we've done, as Conor, Francis, and Grant once again draft their All-NBA teams in politely cutthroat, collaboratively selfish competition (1:49). There will be joy, there will be contr...
Episode 24: The Nuggets' Chances and the Best Route to the League 16.04.2021 49:42
Hey Listener. It's me, The Up & Under Podcast, from your phone. I know it's been a while but you haven't forgotten me already, have you? I'm sorry I wasn't there for you when the Magic sent out their only three competent players. But did it really mean that much to you? I mean you had to have seen this coming, it was long overdue. Okay, okay you're right, it was wrong of me to abandon you and...
Episode 23: The Important Silliness of NBA All-Star Selections 03.03.2021 59:52
Breaking news: LeBron James has tweeted that "the Up & Under is the most disrespected podcast in the game". Most of the disrespect came from him in the first place, but the sentiment is nice. This week Conor, Francis, and Grant touch on the All-Star snubs (or lack thereof) and what it means that the East had so many candidates this year (3:58); give a midseason update on their MVP ballots (31:24);...
Episode 22: Some Smooth Jazz to Get You in the V-Day Mood 14.02.2021 54:02
Welcome back to the Up and Under and Happy Valentine's Day! Hope your love life makes more sense than the NBA standings right now. Not a good initial sign that you're spending your day with us. This week Conor, Francis, and Grant discuss the NBA-leading Utah Jazz (2:07), the jumble of teams in the playoff race and its effects on the trade market (15:49), the league's most disappointing players so...
Episode 21: James Harden Trade and Early MIP Race 16.01.2021 1:06:45
What, another episode already?! Mercifully, we will not typically be releasing episodes every three days, but duty calls when James Harden gets traded. So welcome to a leisurely emergency episode of The Up & Under. On this episode Francis and Grant give their initial reactions and grade the four-team blockbuster trade from every angle (00:46) and then discuss an early season Most Improved Player r...
Episode 20: Early Season Storylines 14.01.2021 55:43
Welcome back to the Up and Under! In our first ever season-opening episode, we dive into a bunch of topics that will surely be irrelevant in a month. Enjoy! The storylines we discuss include an already-irrelevant-because-we-recorded-before-the-Harden-trade evaluation of the surprising and exciting Indiana Pacers (2:46); the Nuggets poor start due to (cough predictable cough) defensive struggles (1...

In Part 1, former Rhodes College basketball sniper and die-hard Lakers fan, Mr. Drink Alone himself Will McIntyre joins the pod to break down the offseasons and o...
Episode 16: 2020 NBA Mock Draft 14.11.2020 1:35:32
Welcome to Season 2 of the Up & Under! We had a shortened offseason due to the NBA's desire to get paid. LeBron told us we should just take the first month off. We said maybe in year eighteen LeBron, but our legs are young and we're still paying off that house we bought for our cousin. This week Conor, Francis, and Grant open it up with a breakdown of Frank's Twitter draft experience as the GM...
Episode 15: Final Finals Thoughts 16.10.2020 1:08:31
As the NBA season has finally come to an end, we're not done just yet. We've got some exciting stuff planned for the offseason, but until then please enjoy us talking about actual basketball for the last time for either a very short or very long period of time. This week Conor, Francis, and Grant are pretty schloppy, but still manage to discuss the Lakers championship (3:00) and its impact o...
Episode 14: NBA Finals Preview 30.09.2020 45:22
This is the day that LeBron has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it. This week — sans Conor — Francis and Grant preview the NBA Finals as they tip-off tonight (26:45). But first they discuss Doc Rivers' firing and his intriguing future (2:10), and recap the Eastern (10:29) and Western Conference Finals (16:41); then they wrap up with a cool 50 on black (43:07).
Episode 13: September Madness 22.09.2020 1:08:56
"Dissents speak to a future age. It's not simply to say, 'My colleagues are wrong and I would do it this way.' But the greatest dissents do become court opinions and gradually over time their views become the dominant view. So that's the dissenter's hope: that they are writing not for today, but for tomorrow." - Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This week Conor, Francis, and Grant talk about the Clippe...
