In Rum, the night sky was further than darkness — it was a vast library written in light. Every evening, when the sun dipped below the horizon and the first stars surfaced, the people of Rum lifted their eyes as though opening a book. merchandisers watched the welkin for signs of good fortune, growers for the meter of planting, mariners for guidance across dark swell.

In the luminous age of Rum, important was studied openly in seminaries and libraries, but there were also lores hidden behind unrestricted doors, rumored from master to convert. These were n't interdicted because they were evil, but because they were important — mystifications too delicate for careless hands.
