Unbinding the Bible

Religion EN ↓ 233 episodes

In Luke 24, Jesus told two of his followers that the entire Bible was about him. Yet their reading of the Bible had not actually prepared them for Jesus. Sadly, the same thing is still happening today, even in churches. This podcast is an invitation to reread the Old Testament with Jesus in mind; to “unbind” it from the many ways it’s been misread and misapplied. I hope you’ll join me!

006 - Whose Likeness is This?* 25.10.2018

This episode is a sermon I preached in October 2017 while working through the gospel of Matthew. The text is Matthew 22:15-22 where Jesus is asked whether it is right to pay taxes to Caesar or not. Jesus' answer, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's" silenced his critics. I've included this sermon here because of its connection to Genesis 1:26-27. I'd...

004 - A Competing Creation Narrative 11.10.2018

In this episode, we'll take a look at another creation narrative that was well-known to the ancient Israelites. By comparing this story with Genesis, we'll be able to uncover some of the underlying motives behind the kingdoms of this world, and how the world God has set up is meant to be different. 003 - Unformed and Uninhabited 04.10.2018

In this episode, we'll look at the first few verses of Genesis 1, paying particular attention to "how" the creation is described and the role that the Spirit plays in bringing order to it.

002 - Is Your Gospel Big Enough? 27.09.2018

In this episode, we'll talk about the nature of the gospel - is it individualistic or something bigger? How does our answer to that question inform how we read the Bible? And how does how we read the Bible inform what we think the gospel is? Please email any questions or comments you may have to: unbindingthebible@gmail.com.

001 - Read it Again, For the First Time 20.09.2018

In this first episode, we'll take a look at some of the ways the Bible (particularly the Old Testament) is typically read and understood. Then we'll look at how Jesus says it should be read, based on a conversation he has with two men on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24.
