Two Friends Watch

In what I believe is Andrew's last podcast with us for a while, we finish his run with a bit of an odd choice of movie, America's Sweethearts. A 2001 Rom-Com with a very strong cast but a rather weak story and Romantic plot. I does have Christopher Walken playing a rather eccentric director. 26 mins

In this week's episode we review Blade Runner, one of the greatest science fiction films ever made and of course one Daniel hasn't seen. Instead of the Judge Dredd-esque action film its title suggests we find a deep and thought provoking movie with an awful lot worth discussing. 47 mins

Our first episode of 2017 proper, we've decided to tackle another difficult art film - this time, it's the English language debut of the acclaimed Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, "The Lobster." A clinically observed, pitch-black comedy on the nature of monogamous relationships, we found it easy to admire but difficult to love. 37 mins

Although violent, gory, and at times repulsive, this is one fantastic movie. Quentin Tarantino pulls another classic out of the bag with this wonderful story about two fairly odd characters facing a culture of racism, violence, and unrest. There really is little we could find wrong with this film; a strong stomach is recommended though. 38 mins

Tonight we tackle a perennial favourite of international film, the French/Italian co-production Cinema Paradiso. A bildungsroman dealing with the adolescence of a boy growing up in a small Italian village in the wake of World War 2, Daniel was enraptured by the sweet coming-of-age tale, and correspondingly frustrated by Andrew's rather cooler response. 36 mins

On our sudden Jim Henson themed run we look at the rather odd and not particularly great "The Dark Crystal".  One of the first all-puppet-no-people films to hit the big screen. While it does have some good points they are seriously overshadowed by some major failings throughout. 26 mins

As a bit of a tribute to the late great David Bowie we are reviewing an iconic film of his, Labyrinth. A piece of puppetry genius the amount of background work to control and organise the huge cast of puppets is staggering. Also it is a bloody good film. 29 mins

RIP Gene Wilder, if we had to pick any film to honour your memory it wouldn't have been this. This was an odd movie, it had one joke that it told in 50 different ways. Some of those ways were funny, many were not. 24 mins

In spite of the crudity and prurience of 1974's Foxy Brown, we both found ourselves having a thoroughly good time with it, due in no small part to the charisma of Pam Grier. 28mins

On the 15th of April 1912 the RMS Titanic sank on her maiden voyage  to New York. 85 years and $200 million later, James Cameron (with a fantastic team) created the best Romantic-Disaster film based on the same ship. This film held the Box office gross record for 12 years before being supplanted by James Cameron's other massive success, Avatar. 37 mins

This week, at the request of Andrew's Dad, we take a look at Southpaw, the boxing film that set the internet all aquiver when it saw how shredded Jake Gyllenhaal had suddenly gotten. It's well-executed and compelling stuff, assuming you've never seen a boxing movie before (which, apparently, Daniel hasn't, so he was enthralled). 38 mins

A movie that both of us hold very close; Ghostbusters is a blend of perfect comic timing, a fantastic story, and an amazing cast all at the peak of their career. 33 mins

Following a run of episodes devoted to films we've both rather enjoyed, we thought it was high time we saw a film with no significant redeeming features for us both to get good and grouchy at as a pallette-cleanser. In one of his most iconic roles Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Dutch the leader of a Special Forces team who are tasked with rescuing some hostages from a jungle. Things spiral out of control quickly as they become game for a terrifying alien hunter. A fantastic movie with some classic cinema moments and lines; but is it a Classic or just a really good film? 39 mins

We're back!  Due to a scheduling mix up/Andrew's apparent inability to understand what genre movies are in, we've actually ended up doing our second consecutive vampire-based comedy. This time, it's the New Zealand mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, a shaggy, sketchy sort of film that nevertheless had us rolling in our chairs with laughter. 35 mins

Henry Rollins is not the worlds greatest actor but when you require someone to be an emotionless vampire who always looks kind of annoyed, he's your guy. This was a surprisingly funny, enjoyable and well made movie and we would recommend it to most people. 40mins

In the wake of Mac and Devin go to High School, Andrew sought a way to exact his revenge on Daniel by means of a punishingly obtuse art film. His plans backfired when we both turned out to rather enjoy Upstream Colour's abstract narrative and challenging imagery. 44mins

When Ben Whittaker gets bored of retirement he joins an online fashion start-up as a senior intern. Jules Ostin is the person behind the start-up who is stretched beyond her limits. Watch as these two unlikely characters connect in this safe, clichéd, but thoroughly enjoyable film. 40 mins
