One of the ways the Gospel of John introduces us to the person at the centre of the Christian faith, Jesus Christ, is by presenting him as the One who came down from heaven. In chapter 12, John records a speech given by Jesus that explains why he came and what it means for us.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus is repeatedly referred to as the One from heaven. In this sermon we consider what significance this gives to his death, which in John 8 is again described as him being “lifted up.”

One of the ways the Gospel of John describes Jesus’ origin is to describe him as the one who came down from heaven. It’s a theme that comes up several times throughout the Gospel and it sheds light on who Jesus is and what he came to do. In John 6, Jesus describes himself as the bread that has come down from heaven to satisfy our spiritual hunger and give us life.

How can we gain real understanding of what is true? How can we truly know God? In today’s sermon we look at a conversation Jesus had with a man named Nicodemus as we see that true understanding requires humility, requires God to come down, and requires God to be lifted up.
