In Psalm 130, the author of this psalm is crying out from the depths of the darkness of his own sin. However, instead of staying there, we see this psalmist show the people of God how to shift from despair to hope by crying out to, waiting for, and hoping in the Lord.

Imagine something worse than you could possibly ever imagine has happened. Psalm 46 fits that situation well. This is a Psalm for when you feel overwhelmed by the chaos of life, when that nauseous feeling comes over you because life feels like your life is spinning out of control. Psalm 46 speaks of God’s real hope to our real fears.

The promise of God throughout Daniel has been that our sovereign God has delivered, and does deliver, and will deliver his people from opposition, oppression, persecution and the extreme persecution that will come at the end of time. Amidst the challenges we face, he promises that he will raise his people from the dead and they will reign with him in his glorious land for all eternity.

Daniel 10 alludes to the fact that life is hard, and we learn why: there is a great conflict being played out in the spiritual dimensions; in the heavens. And the conflicts we experience here on earth are the counterpart of that great spiritual conflict. The more aware we are of this great spiritual conflict, the more we’ll be prepared for the challenges of life on earth.

"Faithfulness in Exile" comes not through our own strength or ingenuity in swimming against the raging currents of pagan culture. It comes through understanding that our only hope is holding fast to our Rock and Redeemer, clinging to Him in prayer.

In Daniel 8, the Lord gives Daniel another apocalyptic unveiling of what was to place in human history. Surprisingly, Daniel’s response was appalled confusion, teaching us that the elect exiles of God are never promised a peaceful journey, but a peaceful destination.

As we come to Chapter 7, we enter the world of the apocalyptic. Apocalyptic literature is not doom and gloom. The overarching idea is that God is revealing something to Daniel (and us) so that he can see what’s going on, but also to give him hope. We are reminded that God is presently on the throne and that He will ultimately triumph.

Luke 24 tells the story of the resurrection. Jesus gets up out of the grave. He’s been crucified, but God raises him up. We pick up the story as Jesus appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus and later He eats with them. But they don’t understand what’s going on. They don’t even recognize Him.

Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday was no accident, it was a bold, intentional declaration that Jesus was the Messiah, anointed by God to save and deliver His people.

To lament is to push our hearts towards God in our pain. The psalmist shows us the way we do that is through our prayers.

The most common type of psalm—over one third— are lament. To lament is to express your grief or sorrow. Lament does not always lead to an immediate solution; it doesn't always bring a quick or timely answer. In Daniel 6, we are confronted with who God is and what His posture is towards His people. He is the God who saves and delivers.

One of the keys to Daniel’s faithfulness in exile was his fear of the Lord above all else. Yahweh is the perfect Judge, and in Daniel chapter five we see Him enact His justice against the open defiance of Belshazzar.

Daniel Chapter 4 takes us on a journey of what it looks like for human pride to end in forced humility by way of a great fall. This is a testimony from a pagan king of the greatness and might of God, and his sovereignty over the kingdoms of the world.

In the well-known story of the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace we see the results of a narcissistic leader whose unchecked power runs amuck; we see the pressure on people of faith to conform to the idols of the world; and we see a God who draws near to His people in the midst of persecution.

There's a crisis in the court. Nebuchadnezzar has a traumatic dream. God reveals the dream and interpretation to Daniel who tells the king, "Your kingdom will fall; others that follow will fail as well. At some future glorious time, the God of heaven will establish his final kingdom, which ultimately will destroy all other kingdoms. In our text, the exiled Daniel resolved to not defile himself with the food and wine of the Babylonian palace. As the Lord had remained faithful to him even in exile, Daniel resolved to remain faithful to the Lord.

Daniel and his three friends have been ripped from their homes in Jerusalem and exiled to pagan Babylon. The dilemma they would face is the same one that the 21st century church faces today i.e. will the people of God remain faithful to their King while living on foreign soil?

David is praying for a real, palpable joy that he can experience. But it’s not just that; it's a joy that is in relation to God's salvation.

The presence of God is something David had experienced. It's something he’d known and felt and tasted. What makes the prayer of Psalm 51:11 earnest for David is that he's asking not to be deprived of what he had justly forfeited — the nearness of God.

God cares about our hearts, and our hearts are terribly broken. What David models in Psalm 51:10 is the absolute and only thing we can do about our own hearts — ask God for a new one.

Why does David pray that his mouth would declare God’s praise? And… why should we pray that our mouths declare God’s praise? There’s more than one answer that, but the ultimate reason is that God’s praise is the reason we have mouths to begin with.

In Psalm 119:9-16, we encounter the Psalmist's threefold approach to the Word of God. His approach is one of discipline, desire and delight.

Truth is, we're confused about where joy actually comes from. We associate joy with any favorable circumstance; everything in life being okay. Joy is being happy with moments of life as it unfolds. Biblically, joy is when you live with Jesus as your King.
