In Ecclesiastes, Solomon looks back at the end of his life and he's reflecting on all that life has taught him. The over-arching theme in Chapter 10 is folly. Ecc 10:10 conveys that it takes more strength to swing an axe when the blade is dull. Yet this is exactly the way foolish people live. Wisdom says, take time to sharpen your axe.

At Christmas, we celebrate God’s great gift to the world in the baby Jesus; a light brought into the world to dispel our darkness. But have you ever given thought to what if Jesus hadn't been born; if there weren't a Luke 2; if God hadn't given us Jesus?

For some of us, this Christmas season has been a time of joy and anticipation, but for others it has been a season of darkness and despair. In Isaiah 9:1-7, those who were in despair were given the hope of a coming Deliverer. Today, it is this Deliverer, Jesus Christ, who is our only hope in the darkness that still wages war on our souls.

This Christmas we're celebrating a before and after story. We're reminding ourselves of what was: the sin, slavery, despair and hopelessness in our world before Jesus. And we're celebrating how things are now because of Jesus (a Savior, and a life of freedom, and deliverance).

When it comes to our redemption, our hope is not in our unwavering faithfulness to God, but in His steadfast love and faithfulness to us.

As we think about idols, we immediately go to stories like the golden calf. Yet, for us, Idols usually aren’t statues that we bow down to. Idols are oftentimes good things that we turn into god things.

In Exodus 19-20, God begins to speak directly to his people, telling them who he is and what he expects. And he does that by giving them the Law/the 10 Commandments. But what do those Commandments tell us about God’s redemption?

Two months after crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites celebrate their freedom, yet they hit another obstacle - the wilderness. There, despite their grumbling, God extends grace and gives them daily manna.

The parting of the Red Sea is the pinnacle text of the Old Testament. God does three distinct things that foreshadow what Jesus does for us to secure our salvation: he sets apart, he sets direction, and he sets us free.

This last plague, the killing of the firstborn in all of Egypt, is the one that finally loosened Pharaoh’s grip on the Israelites. To do so, God initiates a bloody, terrifying mess. And in this, we see both God’s kindness and his severity; his love and justice; his mercy and his wrath.

What's the purpose of the plagues? God wants Israel to know that He's the Lord, their deliverer; that He's going to redeem them with an outstretched arm, and He tells them ahead of time so that they'd know it was Him. But he also wants Egypt and Pharaoh to know that He is Lord as well. In that, the plagues serve as judgements for 400 years of brutal infanticide and slavery, for which Pharaoh refus...

There is no easy way to go through suffering. Until Christ comes back, this life is going to be difficult, some more than for others. In Exodus 6, God answers the question of suffering, saying it will end in His glory.

In Exodus 5, things go from bad to worse for the Israelites. Just as quickly as hope for their redemption was given, it was taken away by Pharaoh. However, through it all God remained faithful to His promise.

The wilderness is a sacred, God-ordained furnace that shapes us into who He wants us to be. And in this place there were three things God was aiming to teach Moses: humility, dependence and obedience. He aims to teach us these things as well.

Often God does His most beautiful, sanctifying work in the lives of His people in the wilderness. Before the Lord used Moses to redeem His people, He first brought him to and through the wilderness.

In Exodus 1-2 we see two different pictures. First we see the plight of 400 years of bondage to slavery, culminating with the edict to kill all male Hebrew babies. But we also see glimpses of light; seeds planted that show off God in his sovereignty and that lead to the birth of a redeemer - Moses.

The story of the Exodus is the most significant, historical and theological event in the entire Old Testament. It’s not just a story about Moses, the deliverer who comes to save a nation of people. The book of Exodus and the Exodus story is a mirror image of our story. It offers us the greatest picture of redemption in the Bible, short of the person and work of Jesus. Community is not about you. It's about our Savior being glorified in how His people proclaim to the world through their words and theirs works who He is and what He has done on our behalf.

In Chapter 8 Mark lets us know we're at the turning point in this story of Jesus. Word is spreading about Jesus; at the same time opposition to him is growing. There’s deep urgency for the disciples to understand who Jesus is and what he is doing. But will they ever get it?

Mark provides two illustrations that continue Jesus' teaching that it's not ethnicity or clean hands that brings one into the family of God. It's choosing to trust him and turning to obey him. It's being willing to receive crumbs.

What makes us defiled is our dirty hearts. Unless we discover this, we'll keep attempting to live our faith and clean up our live's; we’ll attempt to find meaning and significance and cleansing from the outside in, instead of the inside out.

In Mark 6:30-52 we see that Jesus is the Truer and Better Shepherd. Unlike shepherds past, the Good Shepherd came not to be served, but to serve and lay down His life for the sake of His sheep.

In the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, "What has cost God much, cannot be cheap for us", and in Mark 6:1-30 we encounter the sobering fact that there is a cost to following Jesus.

In this passage, we see the selfless openness of our Savior. Jesus not only reaches out to extend His healing touch to others, but also invites others to freely reach out to Him in faith to experience the healing touch that only He can bring.

In Mark 5:1-20 we encounter a man in horrific bondage to the demonic, a danger to himself and to others. Nothing he could do, or others could do for him could set him free, that is until He met the One who is mighty to save.
