Torah reading

This week's reading contains two subjects that even though they appear to contradict, they are very connected. 

In this week's Torah reading called Pinchas, we find the order of inheritance and the division of the Land of Israel between the different tribes. This idea has an important lesson in the service of G-d. Based on Likutei Sichot, vol. 2, p. 346

In this week's reading, Balak, we find the prophet Bilaam wanting to curse the Jewish people and not being able to. G-d changed his curses into blessings. We find a very deep evil meaning of Bilaam inside of each one of us and an interesting tool to prevent it.

This week's reading is called "In the desert" and gives beginning to the fourth book of Torah, which is also called "Numbers". In this book, God commands to count the Jewish people a number of times. What's the meaning if this counting? Doesn't God know the amount of people without it?

This class is an explanation of a talk by the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the subject. It assumes a previous reading of the material. In this week's reading we learn about being holy. Usually this means to be separated from the world. But in this short class we learn that holiness can also mean to be within the world, in a very special way.

The main subject of this two sections is a miraculous decease called Tzraat and the way it appears and gets cured. There are many layers of meaning in the Torah and, therefore, there's a lesson both for regular people and for very elevated people.

This week's Torah reading talks, among other themes, about the death of two of the sons of Aharon, Nadav and Avihu, in the middle of serving G-d. The Torah relates the attitude of Aharon and, when compared to that of King David we can learn a deep lesson.

This week's Torah reading begins the third book of Torah, the book of the laws of Kohanim, priests. Even though most of the ideas and laws of the book don't apply today since we (still) don't have a Third Temple, still the lessons are eternal. How do you become closer to God?
