This Day in Philly Sports History - October 20, 2022 20.10.2022

Relax Philly fans, the Phillies will be ok.  This is New Philly.  On this day in 1993 the Phillies lost to the Blue Jays 15-14 in Game 4 of the World Series.  The game was back and forth until the Phillies pulled ahead 14-9 only to give up 6 runs in the 8th.  They would go on to lose the Series in 6 games.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 19, 2022 19.10.2022

On this day in 1980 the Phillies came from behind in the 9th to beat the Royals 4-3 in Game 5 of the World Series.  The win gave the Phillies a 3 games to 2 lead heading back to Philly for Game 6.  Manny Trillo hit a line shot off Dan Quisenberry and beat out George Brett's throw allowing Del Unser to score the go ahead run.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 18, 2022 18.10.2022

On this day in 2009 the Phillies beat the Dodgers 11-0 in Game 3 of the NLCS.  Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth each had 2 RBIs in the first and Cliff Lee scattered 3 hits to go with 10 strikeouts over 8 innings.  We also preview this year's NLCS.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 17, 2022 17.10.2022

On this day in 2010 the Phillies beat the Giants 6-1 in Game 2 of the NLCS to even up the series.  Jimmy Rollins broke the game open with a 3-run double in the 7th as Roy Oswalt had a no-hitter through 5 innings.

This Day in Philly in Sports History - October 16, 2022 16.10.2022

On this day in 1983 the Phillies lost to the Orioles in Game 5 of the World Series 5-0.  The Eagles were originally scheduled to play the Cowboys at home but due to the World Series they swapped stadiums and lost to the Cowboys 37-7.  We also preview the Eagles/Cowboys game.

On this day in 2008 Jimmy Rollins led off Game 5 of the NLCS with a homer and the Phillies cruised to a 5-1 pennant clinching win over the Dodgers to go back to the World Series for the first time since 1993.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 14, 2022 14.10.2022

On this day in 1979 the Eagles beat the St. Louis Cardinals 24-20 for the 5th straight win.  Harold Carmichael extended his consecutive games with a reception streak to 103, and moved within two of the all-time record.   The win improved the Eagles record to 6-1.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 13, 2022 13.10.2022

On this day in 1993 the Phillies beat the Braves 6-3 in Game 6 of the NLCS.  They went back to the World Series for the first time in 10 years.  Dave Hollins hit a 2-run homer in the 5th to give the Phillies a lead they never let go of.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 12, 2022 12.10.2022

On this day in 1980, in Game 5 of the NLCS the Phillies beat the Astros 8-7 in 10 innings to clinch their first World Series berth in 30 years.  The win was also the Phillies first ever postseason series win.  The NLCS was a wild one and the Phillies carried that momentum into the World Series as they beat the Royals in 6 games.

On this day in 1973 the Flyers opened the season with 2-0 win over the Maple Leafs at the Spectrum.  They would go on to win their first Stanley Cup that year.  We also preview the Phillies/Braves NLDS series as well. 

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 10, 2022 10.10.2022

On this day in 1974 the defending champion Flyers raised the banner at the Spectrum as they opened up the season with a 5-3 loss to the L.A. Kings.  The Flyers would go on to win their second Stanley Cup that season.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 9, 2022 09.10.2022

On this day in 1994 the Eagles beat Washington 21-17 as Randall Cunningham ran for a touchdown and threw another to Fred Barnett.  The moved the Eagles to 4-1, setting up showdown the following week with the Cowboys for control of NFC East division.  We also make our weekly Eagles pick and celebrate the Phillies big win.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 8, 2022 08.10.2022

This day in 1983 the Phillies beat the Dodgers 7-2 in game 4 of the NLCS to clinch their second World Series berth in 4 years.  Gary Matthews hit a 3-run homer in the first and Mike Schmidt went 3-5 with a double and 3 runs scored.  The Wheeze Kids went on to lose the World Series 4 games to 1 to the Orioles.

On this day in 2011 the Phillies lost to the Cardinals 1-0 in Game 5 of the NLDS.  The loss ended the "Golden Era" of Phillies baseball.  We also preview this year's Wild Card round series against the Cardinals.  

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 6, 2022 06.10.2022

On this day in 2010 Roy Halladay pitch a no-hitter against the Reds in game 1 of the NLDS.  He walked one batter and went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the Phillies 4-0 win.  They would go on to sweep the Reds.

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 5, 2022 05.10.2022

On this day in 1950 the Phillies lost game 2 of the World Series to the Yankees 2-1 in 10 innings.  It would be the final postseason game at Shibe Park and the Phillies wouldn't be back in the postseason for another 26 years.  

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 4th, 2022 04.10.2022

On this day in 1987 the Eagles' replacement players lost to the Chicago Bears 35-3 in front of about 4000 fans at the Vet.  The NFL owners decided to use replacement players in response to the NFLPA striking prior to week 3 games.  

This Day in Philly Sports History - October 3, 2022 03.10.2022

On this day in 1993 the Eagles came from behind to beat the Jets 35-30 and moved to 4-0.  The win came a cost however as Randall Cunningham broke his leg and Fred Barnett tore his ACL.  The Eagles would end up 8-8 that season.
