Saul is commanded to destroy Amalek but spares the king and the best of the livestock. Samuel confronts Saul, and the kingdom is taken from him. David is anointed as king in secret and later sent to serve Saul. David faces Goliath, defeats him with a sling and stone, and Israel wins the battle.

Saul offers a sacrifice without waiting for Samuel, and his kingdom is declared not to endure. The Philistines press against Israel, leaving them poorly equipped for battle. Jonathan, Saul’s son, attacks a Philistine outpost with his armor-bearer, causing confusion in the enemy camp. Israel joins the fight and gains victory, though Saul’s rash oath brings trouble among the troops.

Saul is chosen and anointed as king over Israel. He is publicly presented, and the people acknowledge him as their leader. Saul leads Israel in battle and gains early victories. Samuel addresses the people, reminding them of their history as the kingdom is established.

Israel goes to battle against the Philistines and brings the ark into the fight, but it is captured. Eli dies after hearing the news, and the ark is taken into Philistine territory before being returned. Samuel leads Israel and calls them back to the Lord. The people later ask for a king to rule over them.

Hannah prays for a child and gives birth to Samuel, whom she dedicates to the Lord. Samuel grows up serving in the temple under Eli. The sons of Eli act corruptly, and a warning is given against his household. God begins to speak to Samuel, calling him as a prophet.

Naomi returns to Bethlehem with Ruth, her Moabite daughter-in-law. Ruth gathers grain in the fields of Boaz, a relative of Naomi. Boaz acts as a redeemer and marries Ruth. Their family line leads forward within Israel.

A Levite’s concubine is abused and dies, leading to outrage across Israel. The tribes gather and demand justice from the tribe of Benjamin, but conflict erupts into civil war. Benjamin is nearly wiped out in the fighting. The remaining tribes later find a way to preserve Benjamin’s future.

Samson continues to confront the Philistines but is eventually betrayed by Delilah, who discovers the source of his strength. He is captured, blinded, and imprisoned, but later brings down a Philistine temple in his final act. Elsewhere, the tribe of Dan seeks land and takes it by force, setting up their own place of worship. A Levite and his household are drawn into these events.

The birth of Samson is announced to his parents by an angel, and he is set apart from birth. As he grows, Samson begins to act against the Philistines, often through personal conflicts. He marries a Philistine woman, and a series of disputes lead to acts of destruction and revenge. Samson defeats many Philistines using great strength.

Several judges lead Israel during a time of recurring oppression. The people again turn to other gods and later cry out for deliverance. Jephthah becomes a leader and defeats the Ammonites in battle. After the victory, tension arises among the tribes, leading to conflict within Israel.

Gideon pursues the remaining Midianite leaders and defeats them. Afterward, Israel asks Gideon to rule over them, but he refuses, though he later makes a golden ephod that becomes a problem for the people. After Gideon’s death, his son Abimelech seeks power and kills many of his brothers. Abimelech rules for a time before conflict rises against him.

Israel is oppressed by the Midianites, who raid their land and destroy their crops. Gideon is called to deliver Israel and begins by tearing down his father’s altar to Baal. God confirms His calling through signs given to Gideon. With a small army of three hundred men, Gideon defeats the Midianite forces.

Several early judges rise to deliver Israel from oppression. Othniel, Ehud, and Shamgar defeat the enemies who ruled over the people. Later, Deborah leads Israel alongside Barak against the army of Sisera. After the victory, Deborah and Barak sing a song recounting the battle.

After Joshua’s death, the tribes continue attempts to drive out the remaining inhabitants of the land. Some victories are won, but many groups remain living among Israel. A pattern begins where the people turn away from the Lord and follow other gods. Judges are raised to deliver them, but the cycle of disobedience continues.

The tribes east of the Jordan return to their land and build a large altar, which causes concern among the other tribes. After discussion, the altar is understood to be a witness rather than a rival place of worship. Joshua later gathers Israel and recounts their history, calling them to remain faithful. The people renew their covenant with the Lord, and Joshua dies.

The remaining tribes receive their portions of land, completing the division of Canaan. Cities are assigned within each territory, including special cities for the Levites. Six cities are designated as cities of refuge. The chapter closes by noting that the Lord fulfilled the promises made to Israel and gave them rest in the land.

The tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh receive their portions of land. Some areas remain unconquered as the tribes settle into their territories. The tabernacle is set up at Shiloh as the center of worship. The remaining land is surveyed so it can be divided among the rest of the tribes.

A list is given of the kings defeated by Moses and Joshua. The land west of the Jordan begins to be divided among the tribes. Caleb receives the region he was promised for his faithfulness. The territory of the tribe of Judah is described in detail.

The Gibeonites deceive Israel into making a treaty with them. Several kings gather to fight against Israel, but Joshua leads the people to victory. Battles spread across the southern and northern regions of Canaan. The land begins to come under Israel’s control.

The new generation is circumcised, and the Passover is celebrated in the land. Joshua encounters the commander of the Lord’s army. The walls of Jericho fall after the people march around the city as instructed. After an initial defeat at Ai due to hidden sin, Israel returns and captures the city.

Joshua is commissioned to lead Israel across the Jordan River into the promised land. The people prepare to move forward and pledge their support to Joshua. The priests carry the ark into the Jordan, and the waters stop so the people can cross on dry ground. Stones are set up as a memorial of the crossing.

Moses recites a song that recounts God’s faithfulness and warns Israel about turning away. He blesses the tribes of Israel before his death. From Mount Nebo, Moses views the promised land that he will not enter. Moses dies there, and Joshua steps forward to lead the people.

Moses sets before the people a choice between life and death, urging them to love and obey the Lord. He assures them that God will restore them if they return to Him. Joshua is publicly appointed as Moses’ successor to lead Israel. Moses writes down the law and instructs that it be read to the people regularly.

A detailed list of blessings is promised for obedience in the land. A long series of consequences is described for turning away from the covenant. Moses gathers the people to renew the covenant before they cross the Jordan. The chapter closes with a call to faithfulness as they stand on the edge of the promised land.

Additional laws are given about divorce, pledges, fairness, and care for the poor. Israel is reminded to remember their past deliverance from Egypt. Instructions are given for firstfruits and tithes when they enter the land. Blessings and curses are to be pronounced from Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal as a covenant reminder.
