In this psalm, David's own life is being threatened as Saul pursues him, and his own countrymen betray him. Yet rather than wallow in despair, David recollects who God has revealed Himself to be in His Word, and forms his prayer in light of this. Jesus teaches that those who reject Him from a hard heart will always demand more signs, truth, and evidence. However, this passage declares that more than enough truth has been sufficiently revealed. Unbelief is not for lack of light and truth, but lack of sight. Do you see, or are you blind? That is the critical issue.

Jesus confronts His largest crowd yet and His opening word is one of judgment. He's assessed their hearts and found them wicked. They are hardened in their self-righteousness, and their only end will be judgment. The call of Christ is to see yourself rightly by seeing Him rightly. His holiness exposes our sinfulness. We must run to Him for mercy.

More damning to the soul than immorality is morality. Moralism is one of the greatest tactics of the devil to deceive a person into thinking they are right before God. Jesus warns that any moralistic pursuit, void of the Word and truth, is subject to a worse kind of fate.

Seven observations on why Jesus came into the world.

In Psalm 53, David begins with a proclamation: the fool in his heart says, "There is no God." His point is a relatively simple one: one's rejection of God is the wellspring from which all else flows. But this rejection of God is not merely an intellectual rejection of God's existence; it involves the practical atheist, who lives without reference to their Creator. There's a difference between one who's not yet heard the Gospel and one who willfully rejects. One is ignorant, the other hardened. We tend endlessly to marshal evidence, bring arguments, reason, debate, etc. with the one who rejects, but Jesus doesn't. When dealing with a hard heart, He does only one thing. This passage shows what and explains why.

As Jesus's time for the cross approaches, He begins to draw some very clear lines. Either you are with Him or against Him. Either you will gather with Him or scatter, but there is no neutrality. There is no middle ground when it comes to Christ. Not to be with Him is to be against Him.

In Psalm 52, David draws a sharp contrast between the righteous and the wicked. Not only do these two different types of people have vastly different outcomes, their lives in the "here and now" are vastly different. Yet the basis of it all rests upon the unfailing, covenant love of God. As we look to this same reality today, the message remains much the same: are we the man who trusts in the Lord...

In this final passage on prayer, Jesus teaches that we should pray because it is the Father's mean through which He'll grant His promises. Our confidence in Him should come from our understanding of His perfect character. The Father cannot default on a promise because it is not in Him to do so. This is why we can ask in boldness.

Jesus tells a story to teach us that praying must be bold, shameless, and confident. Our confidence does not come from our great faith, but God's great faithfulness. The Christian's boldness is premised upon their knowledge of God's character. Jesus teaches that when we need something from the Father, get a conviction of Who He is, and then just ask Him!

This Sermon examines the history of praying in Judaism during Jesus' day. It is a brief survey, but shows the contrast between empty prayers with prayers offered from the heart. If true prayer is worship, then they must come from a pure heart.
