In Colossians 3:5-11, Paul is telling us how to be who we are. The trick is to not begin by building up and out, but within.

The first passage I began memorizing is Colossians 3:1-17. Were going to do a 4 part mini-series looking at its powerful message.

Everyone wants to prosper, the bible offers a way to make that happen.

The younger brother that was lost far away has been welcomed home with great rejoicing. A happy ending, right? Unfortunately there is another brother, and he too is lost, but his lostness is worse because he is lost close too home.

How we understand the purpose, or telos, of something impacts the way we interact with it. This is true of food, money, clothes, but also of Salvation. Our understanding of its purpose will set us free to flourish now, or leave us with a diminished version of the life that is available to us. Full Sermon Link

Lostness comes in many shapes and sizes; regarding, Jesus comes to seek and save in a multitude of ways.

“The condition of lostness,” says Dallas Willard, “is not the same as the outcome to which it leads. We’re not lost because we are going to wind up in the wrong place. We are going to wind up in the wrong place because we are lost.” The Pharisees didn’t understanding, so they condemned; Jesus understood it, so he saved.

The Prodigal Son is one of the most popular parables. Understanding it requires a peek into what is happening in Luke 14, and answering the question, "Why were the tax collectors and sinners drawing near to Jesus?"

Paul finally arrived at Rome, and when he gets there he discovers that the Gospel has preceded him. Then he gets on to doing what he'd always been doing. On his last stop before arriving at Rome, Paul and his travel buddies are shipwrecked on the island called Malta. There, Paul's journey to Rome is almost disrupted; this time by a poisonous snake, but God is with him through it all.

In ancient Israelite thought, the sea was not just a body of water, it was an force opposed to God. In Acts 27 it shows up again, just as Paul is headed towards Rome. What do we learn from these sea-fairing encounters?

Paul has been in prison for 2 years! His first shot at release is quickly squashed when he discovers that the new ruler is from the tradition of Pontius Pilate. All of this leads us to ask, "What is God doing when we're faced with such injustice?" And, "How do we endure faithfully?"

Paul is summoned by a corrupt official to his room. This presents Paul the opportunity to say something to save his own skin. There is no mystery; instead of Paul saving himself, he tries to save the man.

Paul is in court, but the reason is unclear. When he is given a chance to speak he makes sure the judge knows exactly why he's there: The Resurrection of Jesus.

In Acts 23:11, Jesus appeared to Paul and promised him that he would testify for him in Rome. In the next section there is a plot to kill Paul. Now we get to see what God does to ensure that his will is done.

At first Paul is quick to respond, but then he responds with wisdom. If we are quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry, we will leave room for the Spirit to act.

We easily profess belief in Jesus, but I think we're all aware of the ways in which our belief is porous. I've been sensing God's call to a deeper faith lately, two questions from our discipleship meeting brought it up again. They were Why are we running ourselves ragged when Jesus is the answer? What would your life look like if you just believed Jesus?

Paul is given an opportunity to defend himself, and instead he tells a story about Jesus. We also get a glimpse into the immaturity level that makes up his listeners.

After all of Paul's great work he returns to Jerusalem to discover that some rumors are spreading about. His response illustrates for us the beauty of surrender, especially when you could defend yourself.

In this passage the Holy Spirit spoke to different groups, Paul and his friends, they land on two different interpretations. What is required for us act righteously after having heard from God?

Paul's goodbye message to the elders in Ephesus is instructive to us. Rather than just reminiscing, he fills it with reminders and a warning. From his message we are encouraged to pray for our leaders.

What do we make of Eutychus falling asleep while Paul was preaching? Most people joke about Paul being a long winded speaker, but the real question is, Why was Eutychus there in the first place?
