That conversation is on a tapped phone, so Team Sam listens to it, proving that the Big Dog was right and Kimble is alive. Deputy Sam puts a coat around Newman and minute fifty-one. An expensive overhead establishing shot lets us know that Kimble has reached Chicago, and immediately has a close call with a cop car.
