The JenCarole Show | Democracy 2.0 The Reckoning
This podcast began when I started reporting on the Golden State Killer case as a victim - he murdered my dad and stepmom. It evolved through the pandemic to include tips from what I learned during my (pandemic) coaching training. It morphed again as the 2024 election became complicated by The Idiocracy and Project 2025. In Season 6, I’m committed to fighting for democracy through reporting, showcasing ways we can be resilient and engaged with a bit of humor, snark, and candid takes on how we can show up and be heard.

Jun 27, 2020 | Now | Like a Phoenix Rising (Two Days Before Court) 27.06.2020 31:13
It is possible for one's brain to simply say "enough". That was me yesterday. After a nice evening with Kris and Gay just prepping for today (gathering of victims and some new faces) and Monday, court. I have been struggling with sleep and it finally caught up to me. Thankfully, I managed to get rest and today I'm doing so much better. The link to the Zoom planned for Tuesday is at jcarole.com. Th...
Jun 25, 2020 | Now | Four Days Before the Big Day 25.06.2020 18:43
I promised to share "how it feels" and it's not pleasant. There's too much going on and that's tough. I knew it would get rough but I underestimated how rough. I'm heading out to see Victim 1 who had surgery last weekend and we're hoping she's gonna bounce and be there on Monday. We all just need to make it to the finish line at this point. This one is fast, but provides an update.
June 15, 2020 | Zoom Live: Recording from Today's Discussion 16.06.2020 1:04:51
This was amazing. Thank you to all who came. When I squeal at the beginning, that's totally legit as I could see every sweet smiling face and so many names I recognized. While anything could happen by the 29th (and it seems like so much has), we should soon be putting a fork in this thing. We'll do this again on the 30th.
June 15, 2020 | DeAngelo is Taking a Plea 15.06.2020 24:04
I recorded this on June 3, literally took me three days just to live with the news to be able to talk about it. I had to hold this until the news broke. It's breaking today. I have no words for how hard this has been to have things end so quickly. I also can't thank my legal team enough for their thoughtfulness, empathy and compassion.
June 13, 2020 | Uncovering DeAngelo's History with "Deep Throat" | Part 2 14.06.2020 39:21
Here's part two. As we pour over what Deep Throat has uncovered about DeAngelo, I'm am not surprised he has more crimes that aren't currently included in his "portfolio". I'm having a hard time understanding how his family, the adults, didn't know something was very, very wrong.
June 13, 2020 | Uncovering DeAngelo's History with "Deep Throat" | Part 1 14.06.2020 41:18
I've called her that from almost the first day. Desperate to maintain her privacy, Deep Throat (my moniker for her) has done incredible research into DeAngelo that goes beyond what you've read in the papers. She also provides insight into how to do this kind of research yourself, which I find truly interesting. See what you think. Here's part one.
June 12, 2020 | The Crush of Feels, Pretrial 12.06.2020 24:15
The last few weeks have been incredibly hard. This pod is pretty raw as I struggle to share my feelings.
June 4, 2020 | The Visalia Ransacker Interview with Margie Smith (Part 2) 04.06.2020 43:41
THIS IS PART TWO - MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO PART ONE FIRST! Margie talks about what DeAngelo did when he broke into homes and then she taps some of his classic behaviors: anniversaries, riddles, mind-f-cking. All things we now know. I wish we could convict him for every damn crime.
June 4, 2020 | The Visalia Ransacker Interview with Margie Smith (Part 1) 04.06.2020 42:18
Before he terrorized Sacramento, Joseph DeAngelo, the amazingly evil Golden State Killer, managed to terrorize Visalia. He murdered Claude Snelling and broke into more than 100 homes. There's more we just can't prove. Here's Margie's story (not my mom!) in part one of two.
May 9, 2020 | Interview with Todd Lindsey, Producer, Unmasking a Killer 09.05.2020 53:18
From the minute I met Todd, in 2017 for the taping of Unmasking a Killer, I was impressed. I've seen him many times since and I'll always have a soft spot for him because of how he managed a serious topic while telling a story. I talked with him before HBO started promoting the new series and interestingly, we did talk about the intersection of entertainment and true crime. Learn more about Todd h...
May 7, 2020 | In the News | Epilogue - What Happens Next 07.05.2020 35:27
So we find out how the church moved forward, how Alsip moved forward, how Hanawalt moved forward and meanwhile, the Smith case starts its journey into the void of cold case land. View blog post with images and links.
May 6, 2020 | In the News | The Judge Rules There is Enough Evidence to Bind Alsip Over to Trial 06.05.2020 33:50
Since you don't need evidence beyond a reasonable doubt to be bound over for trial, the judge does the only thing he can. He tells Alsip he must stand trial. But then, in an amazing series of events, with integrity and incredible commitment to ethics, the Ventura District Attorney makes a bold move. View blog post with images and links.
May 5, 2020 | Now | The HBO Teaser Has Dropped; My Thoughts 05.05.2020 24:12
I didn’t realize HBO was going to drop the teaser on Sunday and it did catch me a bit off-guard. I always do my best to share real-time feelings about these things, so let’s do that. I’m wrote a blog first because I wanted to be thoughtful about what I say. https://jcarole.com/hbo-ill-be-gone-in-the-dark-teaser/
May 3, 2020 | In the News | The Defense Goes Hard to Discredit the Church 03.05.2020 38:12
Defense attorney Richard Hanawalt pulls out all the stops to discredit the pastor's testimony and prove reasonable doubt for the judge. View blog post with images and links.
Apr 28, 2020 | In the News | The Defense Gets Wound Up 1982 29.04.2020 50:11
With Joe Alsip still sitting in jail, the prosecution has rested and now it's time for the defense. Richard Hanawalt ( here's a photo! ) is ready to go to town as he continues his cross examination of the Rev Mikel and others from the church. Meanwhile, we learn of Charlene's affair and the victim's daughter (me!) takes the stand. Hang on folks, this pod has a lot of information. View blog post wi...
Apr 26, 2020 | In the News | The Prosecution Rests in 1982 26.04.2020 39:31
The twists and turns of my father and stepmother's lives, along with the cast of supporting characters you couldn't make-up, turns Alsip's preliminary hearing into a crazy, convoluted mess. But the stuff they have on the pastor?!? This is nuts. Sometimes I can't help but laugh! View blog post with images and links.
Apr 25, 2020 | In the News | Working our Way Toward the Preliminary Hearing in 1982 26.04.2020 36:03
We know Joe Alsip didn't do it, and yet, he's sitting in jail, month after month, based on evidence, procedures, hypnosis and more and time just keeps slipping away. As does the money. What a hot mess this is. More from the Ventura Star Free Press. View blog post with images and links.
Apr 16, 2020 | In the News | In Which We First Learn of the Rev Donald Mikel 17.04.2020 35:56
Lots of foreshadowing in this episode as we learn of the esteemed pastor and his role in the case. We also learn more about my dad's amazingly convoluted business dealings - I have no idea how they kept everything straight. Turns out, maybe they didn't. View blog post with images and links.
Apr 14, 2020 | In the News | Former Partner Held in Smith Slayings 15.04.2020 35:00
From the Star Free Press in Ventura, starting Nov 20, 1981, we find out Joe Alsip is charged and we spend a lot of time understanding his struggle to afford a defense attorney. In sharp contrast, the real killer is soaking up California resources like a dry lake bed in Mono County. View blog post with images and links.
Apr 9, 2020 | Interview | Meet Survivor Kris Pedretti, Victim #10 10.04.2020 49:25
On Saturday, December 18, 1976, 15-year old Kris Pedretti was raped repeatedly by the East Area Rapist (who later became known as the Golden State Killer). Today she tells her story and how, by breaking her silence, she's working to advocate for survivors who've been afraid to tell their story. Click here to join her private Facebook group .
Apr 4, 2020 | Interview | Stacey Scott Paranormal Investigator & GSK 05.04.2020 48:49
I loved this interview so much. I did it on video for the Life Coach Pod (it's on YouTube) if you want to see Stacey in person. At the end of the interview, she talked about the Golden State Killer and then, and then! Stacey blew my mind. All the feels. Companion blog with photo is here: https://jcarole.com/paranormal-investigator-stacey-scott/
Apr 2, 2020 | Interview | A Closer Look at Charlene Smith with Caryl Billings 03.04.2020 58:19
Caryl and Charlene grew up together - like sisters as she describes it - and she's one of the only people I know who understood how Charlene ticked. I have loved getting to know Caryl and I am bummed I didn't get to know Charlene better as an adult. I had one last visit, that was everything, and it turns out, it was the same for Caryl. I hope you enjoy this.

Mar 25, 2020 | In the News | Two Lawsuits, Two Mysteries 26.03.2020 37:57
This pod is a little different because I could use your help. There were two lawsuits filed in Ventura in late 1980 and early 1981. One was by us, dad's kids, for wrongful death. The other was against my dad's estate, brought by one of his business partners who was left "holding the bag". In both cases, we have more of a mystery than answers. Maybe you'll know what I should do next!
