All that the Lord had in mind for Moses to do had come to an end. Why would the Lord want to kill the Canaanites? All men, women, and children were to be killed. In essence genocide. The Israelites had finally gotten themselves to the border of the Promised Land, they even sent spies into the land to check the best routes. The fear that the Israelites had was real. And it was logical! Yet, despite the fear they should have looked to God to be the one that would bring them through their trails.
