We think we know ourselves, yet God is the one that created us, and knows what we need more than we do. We might try many things to address our deepest need, but God only knows our deepest need. We must be completely available for God to reveal what ultimately need. Seeing our sin [what we are by nature – rebellious and self-willed] is a work of God. This means that it is dangerous to go hunting for our sin. The Devil brings condemnation regarding our sin. The Holy Spirit brings conviction. The difference is between hopelessness and despair on the one hand and joyous freedom and appreciation for God’s love and forgiveness on the other. Repentance brings joy.

The repentance necessary to enter into God’s world is not merely remorse over bad actions, it is much deeper. The changed thinking that Jesus is calling for is a change from seeing sin as behavioral to seeing it as a relational problem between oneself and God. Sin is independence from our Creator.
