The discovery and publication of the so-called “Gospel of Judas”,  which paints him as a hero, shook the faith of many. But, who wrote it, and how can we know it’s bogus?

When Exodus began, it seemed God wasn’t there. Now, at the end, he “moves in” among his people in the tabernacle. All of this is a setup for John 1:14: “the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us”. We also become living tabernacles of Jesus Christ via our baptism.

Moses’ face shines with the glory of God, but it fades when he leaves God’s presence. For us, as long as we’re in a state of grace, the unfading light of Christ shines within. Plus: a Q and A on how the Catechism of the Catholic Church came to be!

Moses had the singular privilege of speaking with God face-to-face, as one would with a friend. But now, in the New Covenant, Jesus calls us all his friends, and we all have the opportunity for personal conversation with our Eucharistic Lord.

God “moves away” from his people in Exodus, like a married couple might become estranged. We, too, have to guard against having God at the fringes of our lives, keeping him at arm’s length.

Moses asks, “Who’s with God? Who’s with me?” The Levites then slaughter many of their fellow Israelites—but only those who refused to repent of their sin with the golden calf. And so it is today: only those who refuse repentance will be lost forever.

The vestments of the high priest in Israel were like a fireman’s protective gear, keeping them safe from the fire of God’s holiness.

The Israelites take gold meant for God’s worship to build an idol. Sometimes we do the same: using God-given resources of time, money, and strength on that which damages our relationship with the Lord.

God reiterates to Moses that Sabbath observance isn’t optional. Failure to comply results in physical death! In Exodus 31, we meet craftsmen who construct God’s “mobile home”, the Tabernacle. They are given the same gifts of wisdom & skill God gives the king! So, what’s the best job in the world? It’s the one that is done with the most love of God.

One could be “cut off” from the people of God in Ancient Israel, and the Church reserves the strong medicine of excommunication too…but only as a last resort.

Our culture worships beauty, making it an idol. Rightly ordered, though, as a transcendental, beauty should draw us to the one, true, living source of beauty, God.
