Up to this point in his Gospel, Mark has not explicitly called Jesus King. Suddenly, He is called King six times. While this title is mostly given to Jesus in a mocking way, its sudden appearance signals to us that Mark has something for us to learn about the true nature of Jesus’ Kingship.

The institution of the the Lord’s Supper is sandwiched between two stories in which Judas’ betrayal and all the disciples falling away are foretold, giving us great hope that the Supper is actually for sinners like us.
