The Charlotte Podcast

This week, we were joined by the recently appointed District Attorney for Mecklenburg County, Spencer B Merriweather III. We discussed his path to the position, major issues Charlotte is facing and whether he would prosecute Batman. We also learned the history of the Grace AME Zion Church and were lifted up by Supportive Guy.

We were joined by the incredible Meggie Williams of the Waggle Company to learn about her experience so far at Techstars in Austin, Texas. For history we covered the creation of the Lance Packaging Company and wrapped up the episode (as always) with some supportive words from Supportive Guy.

On this episode we were joined by Greg Meitus of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Carolinas to discuss the impact their programs are having on the community. We also (briefly) touched on Charlotte’s failed bid for the new Amazon HQ, learned about the incredible history of Sonic Man and were supported (as always) by Supportive Guy.

This week we were joined by two of the newest members of Charlotte’s City Council, Tariq Bokhari and Larken Egleston. We discussed their new podcast (R&D in the QC), how they’re working to make government more accessible and played a quick round of “The Newly Elected Game.” We also learned about the history of Charlotte’s government and were supported (as always) by Supportive Guy.

It’s been two years of podcasting for us and that means it is time for reflection and stating our goals going forward. To accomplish this we brought back our ombudsman Susan McDonough to go over what we got right (and wrong) with the podcast in 2017. We also learned about St. Mary’s Chapel and were inspired by Supportive Guy.

We didn't plan on talking about the Panthers...but it's been a crazy day.

This week John and Miller reunited (from inside John's actual house!) to talk Belk Bowl, what to expect from the #pod in 2018, and all things Holidays in Charlotte. We also learned about how Charlotte's namesake Queen Charlotte INVENTED THE DANG CHRISTMAS TREE and how that should be a bigger deal in Charlotte. John interviewed Sean Garrett of the United Way for an update what the organization is doing in the community. We also learn the history of Grandmama and were supported (as always) by Supportive Guy.

On this very special episode we hung out with our new friend Joe Bruno in front of a live audience and discussed cone weed, spills and some other (actually) important things. This week we were joined by Charlotte’s two candidates for mayor, Councilman Kenny Smith and Mayor Pro Tem Vi Lyles. They were both pretty darn delightful, and very willing to tell their personal stories and dish on all things Charlotte, music, sports memories, and even their stances on if Charlotte should have a statue of Grandmama. NC State Senator Jeff Jackson returns to the podcast to discuss his 1,000 Doors of Summer, gerrymandering and why he feels optimistic about the future of politics. We also learn some (insane) racing history and were supported (as always) by Supportive Guy.

Today we were joined by James E. Ford to discuss his path to being North Carolina’s Teacher of the Year and how that has taken him to his role on the Leading on Opportunity Council. It was an incredible conversation that we hope you enjoy. We also learn about Earl “the Goat” Manigault and teachers were lifted up by Supportive Guy.

Today we were joined by Clay (aka @SportsDespair) to preview the Panthers’ season. Miller also vents about Clay’s Twitter performance and we learn the history of The Oriental.

Today we were joined by Larken Egleston, who is running for City Council in District 1. Larken discussed his path to running for office and what he issues he is most passionate about. Somehow we also convinced him to answer rapid fire questions and Supportive Guy pitched some new slogans for his campaign.

We were joined by Dan LaTorraca, the former social media manager for the @Panthers. We also learned the history of the Panthers expansion bid and Supportive Guy shared some kind words for Dan.
