Psalm 124 a a psalm of jubilant praise. This psalm and the previous (123) go together as one unit. Psalm 123 is the prayer for God to act. Psalm 124 is the peoples reaction to God’s answer. In verses one through five, the psalmist acknowledges what might have happened. Verse six through eight is a ascription of what did happen.

In Matthew 8:1-17, Matthew presents three instances of Jesus’ authority over disease. He records that Jesus healed a leper, a Gentile, and a woman. It is no coincidence that Matthew chose these three examples of Jesus’ miraculous power. Besides having diseases, these three had one common problem. They were each despised by the religious leaders.

Psalm 123 is a psalm of hope. Amid mistreatment and scorn, the psalmist throws himself before the Lord and cries out for mercy. The psalm exquisitely expresses the moods of his soul under such circumstances described here. He has hope as he focuses his sight on God. This short psalm proves a great example of how to pray to God for hope in hopeless situations.

Matthew presents Jesus’ itinerant ministry in verses twenty-three to twenty-five of chapter four. His itinerant ministry involved teaching in the synagogue, proclaiming the Gospel, and healing the crowds. C. H. Spurgeon once said of Jesus, “He was the Prince of open-air preachers, the Great Itinerant, the President of the College of all preachers of the gospel.”

Psalm 117 is a summons to universal praise. It is the shortest of all the psalms and demonstrates that prayer and praise does not need to be lengthy, just sincere. As Jesus said in Matthew 6:7, “When you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.”

As Matthew continues with the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, he presents the preaching ministry of Jesus in Matthew 4:12-17. Three facts about Jesus’ preaching ministry are presented. Matthew notes the site where Jesus preached (4:12-13). Next, he presents the society to whom Jesus preached (4:14-16). Finally, Matthew reveals the sermon Jesus preached (4:17).

Psalm 116 about death and deliverance. The psalmist found himself surrounded by death but then he cried out to God and was delivered. This psalm finds its fulfillment in the Gospel. Humanity is dead is sin but when a sinner cries out to God, confessing their sin and believing the Gospel, God, in turn, delivers them from the penalty of sin.
