City of Erie Mayor Joe Schember returned to our daily radio show focused on Erie to talk about the city budget talks, diversity efforts and fee increases.

On Wednesday, we got an update on the Erie School District, as they are reporting some great improvements in students’ test scores.  Our guest was the Director of Educational Services at Erie’s Public Schools, Karin Ryan.

On our Tuesday program, we had our monthly meeting with the County Executive, Brenton Davis.  It was a weighty, in-depth discussion surrounding economic development and the budget for 2023. 

On Friday, the Erie City Mission announced that Darrell A. Smith will be its next Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2023. Stephen Westbrook, who has been the CEO for the last seven years, will end his tenure with the Erie City Mission on December 31, 2022. Both gentlemen joined us at the Joel Natalie Show Monday to share their stories and the state of the Mission's essential work.

Here on the corner of 5th and State, we are surrounded by new construction as well as historic architecture.  On our Tuesday program, we focused on the preservation of classic buildings such as these, as we talked to Chris Kinder about the city’s Historic Preservation Plan.

We began the month with fascinating conversation with Erie ex-pat author and professor Dr. Craig von Buseck. Craig is a prolific author of books centered on figures in history like Ulysses S. Grant, Harry S. Truman, and we talked about his focus on people who rose in prominence from Erie, like Harry T. Burleigh, and Col. Strong Vincent.

An update from leaders of Erie's anti-violence strategy called Unified Erie joined Joel for an update to close the month of November. Joining us was Blue Coats leader "Brother D" Daryl Craig, Mercyhurst Civic Institute director Amy Eisert, Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz, and Erie Police Chief Dan Spizarny to walk through the evidence-based program.

We kept the focus right on the City of Erie Tuesday, as we welcomed Erie City Councilman Chuck Nelson back for a deep dive on the city budget. We talked stormwater fees, parking tickets and the looming deficit.
