God is the vine grower, the true vine -- the vine in the Old Testament prophets has become degenerate. And now Jesus comes along and says he's the true vine. And his father is the vine grower. So we know that we will have the energy to be the branches. We will bear fruit. And we will do it in the way that is comfortable for us.

And what does the shepherd do? He goes and finds him. That's right. Jesus goes and finds him. And they have a conversation and he becomes a disciple. And in the midst of this, we have Jesus say these beautiful words, which really speak to all of John's gospel, in which he says, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."

Love is the law. And we sin when we stop acting in love. God is waiting to forgive when, as the psalmist says, we speak to our hearts in silence and put our trust in the Lord by turning back to love. Jesus showed his hands and feet to his friends to reveal himself to them. But how does Jesus reveal himself in today's world?

As people who love God, as people who received the grace of that love, we have done nothing to earn it. We can do nothing to lose it. This is grace. Our call is to be so filled up with this love and so transformed by this love that indeed, when we go back out into that world that God loves so much, that love overflows from us into this world, that this world can indeed be the dream.

Perhaps making a discipline of delight is just what we need to snap us out of the trance of doom, despair. Or just plain old crankiness. Imagine delight as a string on your finger. A reminder of God's mercy and goodness toward us and toward all living creatures. A reminder that we are made to delight in God as God delights in us.
