This message was from our Volunteer Summit, which is our one time each year when our volunteers come together for a morning of fellowship, worship, and encouragement.

We live in a region overflowing with opportunity—promotions, pay raises, benefits, bonuses—and yet the more we get, the less satisfied we feel. The pull toward “just a little more” never stops. What if the problem isn’t what we don’t have…but what we’ve been looking to for enough?

What if the story of Christmas isn’t God pulling us out of darkness…but Him stepping into it? That’s Christmas. It’s us celebrating: God didn’t wait for the world to get it right. He stepped into the darkness and turned on the light.

From King David’s scandals to Lot’s daughters’ awkward moments, Jesus’ family tree is full of stories that would make anyone blush. God’s purposes aren’t stopped by human mess-ups— they’re propelled forward. What if God’s power is strongest in your weaknesses?

Rahab wasn’t Jewish. She was a Canaanite prostitute. And yet, she becomes one of the names in Jesus’ genealogy. God’s purposes don’t fail just because your story isn’t “acceptable.” What if your past is exactly what God wants to use for His glory?

Isaac may have been the son of promise, but he wasn’t immune to family dysfunction. Just like his dad, he fibbed his way through a tough spot. God still used him to move His story forward. What if God can use you even when you don’t get it right?

Healthy families don’t happen by accident—they happen when people choose connection over comfort. Whether it’s friends, church, or home, we all need people who hold us up when life hits hard. What if God’s design for family is the cure for our isolation?

Every family’s got its quirks, chaos, and a little bit of crazy. But God has always been about family—just not the way we expect. He invites us into a new kind of family, one built on grace, not genetics. What if belonging to God’s family changes how you see your own?

“You do you” sounds freeing—but it leaves us isolated. Jesus designed the church to be a family on mission, investing in each other and reaching people far from Him. Are you investing in someone who has yet to be found?

The world says protect your stuff. Jesus says give it away. God held nothing back for us, and we reflect His heart when we sacrifice what we love for what we love more. What is God calling you to release so He can do more through you?

Playing it safe sounds wise—but following Jesus often means stepping out into the unknown. Faith means risk. Trust. Boldness. Where is God calling you to trust Him beyond what feels safe?

Culture says follow your heart. But the Bible reminds us our hearts deceive us. Life change happens when we build on God’s truth, not shifting feelings. Are your priorities consistent with the Bible?

Culture says every path leads to the same place. But the gospel says Jesus is the way, not a way. When we put Him at the center of everything, life starts to make sense. How clear is your understanding of the gospel?

You were born into a battle—but you weren’t left unarmed. Paul says our strength doesn’t come from grit, but from God. He supplies the armor. He wins the war. So…are you standing in His strength, or still swinging in your own?

We learned love from what we saw—but what if what we saw wasn’t love? Jesus invites us to imitate God’s love: sacrificial, pure, and healing. Could your marriage, singleness, or sexuality be rewritten by God’s design?

Growing up in Christ means unlearning the scripts that shaped us and learning to speak the truth in love. You can’t be made new without letting go of the scripts that formed the old you. Are you stuck in old patterns—or letting Jesus teach you a new way to live?

There’s a seat at God’s table for the outsider, the misfit, and the wounded. The mystery of the gospel is that you’re fully included. Where have you been trying to earn what God already gave?

Sin isn’t just what you do—it’s the story you inherited. But grace interrupts the cycle. Paul says God made us alive while we were dead. What if your family’s story, that goes all the way back to the beginning of human history, doesn’t have to be your cycle?

Before your family shaped you, before culture labeled you, God chose you. Paul says you’re blessed, adopted, redeemed, and sealed—in Christ. What if your core identity isn’t your past, your pain, or your performance—but your position in Him?

You don’t have to be loud to be bold. You don’t have to be perfect to be effective. But if someone in your life asked, “What makes you different?”—would you be ready? If joy is what leads us to invite, then let’s talk about where joy really comes from—not fake hype, but real, unshakable joy. Joy that can survive prison, heartbreak, stress, and chaos.

If we’re going to extend invitations that actually land…we’ve got to acknowledge the reputation they’re landing in. Every invite we give carries a weight. That weight is made up of a person’s past experiences, the stories they’ve heard, the headlines they’ve read, and most importantly—the Christians they’ve known. Who in your life needs to see the light before they hear the invite?

As we read the first few pages of John’s biography of Jesus, we meet a guy named Philip who didn’t have a plan or a script. He just had a name in mind and a simple phrase: “Come and see.” What happened next was life changing.

We’re each uniquely positioned to solve a problem in the world—but distractions blur that calling. Whether it’s foggy busyness, burning chaos, or paralyzing fear, naming the distraction is the first step toward clarity and purpose. This conversation helps us recognize what’s getting in the way of the great work God has prepared for us.

We often miss out on the great work God has for us because we’re distracted—and sometimes, those distractions are easier to chase than the deeper calling that scares us.
