“S” is for Salley, Eulalie Chafee (1883-1975). Suffragist, realtor.

“R” is for Rhett, Robert Barnwell (1800-1876). Congressman, U.S. Senator.

“P” is for Peaches: State Fruit.

“N” is for North Charleston (Charleston County; 2020 population 113,886).

“M” is for Martin, Dexter Charles (1897-1982). Aviation pioneer.

“L” is for Lee, Robert Greene (1886-1978). Clergyman. Lee was born in York County and baptized (1898) and ordained (1910) in the Fort Mill Baptist Church.

“J” is for Johnson, Harriet Catherine Frazier (1889-1972). Legislator, state 4-H Club leader.

“H” is for Hanging Rock, Battle of (August 6, 1780). After the capitulation of Charleston in May 1780, the British moved quickly to gain a foothold in the South Carolina backcountry. Hanging Rock (named for a large boulder perched on a knob) was one of several outposts situated to protect the main British base at Camden.

“G” is for Gibbes, Louis Reeve (1810-1894). Physician, scientist.

“F” is for Floyd, Carlisle Sessions (1926-2021). Composer. Born in Latta, Floyd studied piano at Converse College and at Syracuse University.

“E” is for Elfe, Thomas (ca. 1719-1775). Cabinetmaker. Elfe is the individual most often associated with the pre-Revolutionary cabinetmaking industry in Charleston due to the survival of one of his account books.

“D” is for DeLeon, Edwin (1818-1891). Diplomat, writer.

“C” is for Cardozo, Francis Lewis (1836-1903). Clergyman, educator, politician.

"B” is for barrier islands. Barrier islands are so named because they shield the mainland (as well as inland Sea Islands) from damage caused by sea storms.

"S" is for Swansea Veneer and Basket Works. Founded in 1914 by Washington Bartow Rast, the Swansea Veneer and Basket Works was an expansion of Rast’s veneer mill that he had started in 1896. Initially the factory made banana drums, barrels, furniture, and fine veneers.
